Dissertation Advisor: Professor Jonathan Losos Ambika Kamath Phenotypic Variation and the Behavioral Ecology of Lizards Abstract Behavioral ecology is the study of how animal behavior evolves in the context of ecology, thus melding, by definition, investigations of how social, ecological, and evolutionary forces shape phenotypic variation within and across species. Framed thus, it is apparent that behavioral ecology also aims to cut across temporal scales and levels of biological organization, seeking to explain the long-term evolutionary trajectory of populations and species by understanding short-term interactions at the within-population level. In this dissertation, I make the case that paying attention to individuals’ natural history— where and how individual organisms live and whom and what they interact with, in natural conditions—can open avenues into studying the behavioral ecology of previously understudied organisms, and more importantly, recast our understanding of taxa we think we know well. -

RADHAKRISHNAN Western Ghats Field Research St-ation, Zoological Survey of India, Calicut-673 002 INTRODUCTION The Idukki district which was a part of the erstwhile State of Travancore, is also a sign~ficant segment of the Western Ghats known for its faunal wealth and the famous Periyar Tiger Reserve is located in the district. Besides the Periyar Tiger Reserve, the district has four more conservation areas namely, the Idukki Wildlife sanctuary, the Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary, the Eravikulam National Park and the Thattekkad Bird sanctuary. The present report is based on the study of a collection of reptiles obtained from the cons~rvation ~reas of Periyar Tiger Reserve, Idukki and Chinnar Wildlife sanctuaries and the Eravikulam National park (fig. 1) which are deposited in the faunal holdings of the Western Ghats Field Research station of the Zoological Survey of India at Calicut. The collection studied contain 32 sp'ecies of reptiles falling under 19 genera and g families (Table-I). Smith (1935, 1943) has already focussed our attention on the reptiles occurring in the Western Ghats. Some of the recent works which deal with "the reptilian fauna of the Western Ghats are those of Daniel (1983), Murthy (1985, 1986) and Tikader and Sharma (1992). There has been no consolidated systematic account d~aling with the reptiles of the Idukki district so far barring brief notes by Chandrasekhar (1987). We prepared an ethogram consisting of seven states and 10 events from these observations. This is the first ethogram made for an Indian turtle species. Preliminary time-budgets suggest females may be more active than males, and our observations suggest the possibility of other sex-specific behavioral traits, although our small sample sizes prohibit statistical validation at this time. We advocate long-term behavioral studies of the Cane Turtle in its natural habitat for conservation and management purposes. Territorial and site fidelity behavior ofLyriocephalus scutatus (Agamidae: Draconinae) in Sri Lanka 1Imesh Nuwan Bandara 1“Ellangaawa” Unity care for Community & Nature, No:1/112, Hapugoda, Ambatenna, SRI LANKA 20136; Youth Exploration Society of Sri Lanka, P.O. box 82, Peradeniya, SRI LANKA Abstract.—This study on territorial behavior of Lyriocephalus scutatus suggests that territorial be- havior is an important component of the life history of the species. Lyriocephalus scutatus belongs to the monotypic genus Lyriocephalus, and apparently its uniqueness, placing it in its own genus, extends to its strange behavior and atypical site fidelity. To understand this territorial behavior, two populations were observed while continuously recording other factors influencing territorial and site fidelity behaviors. Individual lizards performed various behaviors in their daily active periods on tree trunks and on the ground. They also exhibited highly specific synchronized territorial behavior among other individuals in the same population. Behavioral patterns differed between males and fe- males, and the degree of “aerial horizontal distribution” of L. scutatus seems to be a novel behavior among lizards. Individual L. scutatus are highly territorial over other individuals of the same sex, as adult males observed in the study sites solely performed their territorial displays on a specific tree, whereas females occupied the largest territories.
