He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in English. He served in the US Marines. He met his wife Charlotte Magnussen in Montreal and was married in 1978. He and his family (Charlotte and daughter Christine) moved to West Point, MS, in 1994. He always had an active interest in film and shot his first film “Swept Off My Feet” in West Point. Because there were no festivals in Mississippi to screen the film, he started the Magnolia Independent Film Festival, the first of its kind in MS. He loved sharing his craft, enthusiasm, and love of film with all but especially young minds. He encouraged many to follow their dreams in film. We miss him dearly. This award is presented each year in memory of Ron Tibbett who helped launch the Tupelo Film Festival in 2004. THE ELVIN WHITESIDES DIRECTOR’S AWARD Elvin Whitesides, a native of Tupelo, came to his love of film as a boy, sitting beside his father in the projection booth of the Lyric Theatre, screening years of first-run Hollywood features. That formative experience led to a BFA in Theatre from the University of Southern Mississippi, professional training in both New York and Los Angeles, and managing the Bing Theatre at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for over twenty years. Through- out his career, Elvin continued to make films, write, perform, produce, and direct until his untimely death in May 2010. A two-time judge at the Tupelo Film Festival, 2011 marks the inaugural Elvin Whitesides Director’s Award, a tribute to his talent for guiding and inspir- ing countless cast and crews toward a common creative goal through the magic of movies. This award is present in memory of Elvin Whitesides who served as a mentor to the festival, as well as a judge.

  • FY16 Tourism Economic Contribution Report

    FY16 Tourism Economic Contribution Report

Welcome to the Fiscal Year 2016 Economic Impact Report of Travel and Tourism in Mississippi. This report gives a detailed analysis of the tremendous role tourism plays in Mississippi’s economy. Clearly, tourism is big business in Mississippi. During the last fiscal year, an estimated 23 million visitors spent $6.3 billion in Mississippi and generated $395.1 million for the state’s General Fund. I invite you to consider exploring more of Mississippi for yourself. Every region in the state has a wealth of unique sights, sounds, tastes and experiences worthy of your time. Governor Phil Bryant Tourism is a vital component of our state’s economy. More than 86,000 Mississippians work directly in the travel and tourism trade, with nearly 98 percent employed in the private sector. Still, those numbers only tell part of the story. The attractions making up Mississippi’s vast tourism assets also create more vibrant communities where people not only want to visit, but also to live. Quality of life is directly related to the abundance of opportunities. In Mississippi, we are fortunate to have both. Glenn McCullough, Jr. | The Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Visit Mississippi is dedicated to promoting the state’s array of attractions to people across the U.S. and around the world. When visitors dine in our restaurants, stay overnight and play at our golf courses and casinos, they experience genuine hospitality. These visitors respond by spending more money — $130.4 million, or 2.1 percent, over FY 2015 — and this growth our state succeed in many other areas.

First and foremost, I want to thank my my supervisor Ao. Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. phil Maria Löschnigg for her continuous support and help along the way. By sharing her tremendous knowledge and motivation with me, this thesis became possible. Thank you for providing an environment in which young scholars like me can feel their voices heard and valued. Furthermore, I want to thank my grandfather, Werner Reiser, for sharing his passion for literature with me and exposing me to the wonders of stories and poems since I have been a kid. Through his continuous support and love, I became the person I am today. I would also like to thank my flatmates and friends (the sensible animals) for assisting and motivating me during the writing process. By showing genuine interest in the project in general and, especially, by helping me to make sense out of my sometimes confused interpretations, you all gave me the inspiration and courage to voice my own understanding of the songs.
