ART BEYOND EUROPE PORTFOLIO

The Art Beyond Europe component of your summer work will be to research and develop notes on any five works of art from outside the European/Western tradition. This includes East and South Asia, the Middle East and Sub- Saharan Africa, and pre-Columbian American societies. The Western tradition entails Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, Europe, and European cultural colonies overseas (such as post-Columbian American societies, Australia, South Africa, and the like).

As you learn about each work of art, identify the FAHI (Fundamental Art Historical Issues) that are most relevant. Take notes on these, as well as any relevant historical context. You may use any works of fine art, but are advised to use either the website of a museum (Metropolitan Museum in New York, for example) or the A History of the World in 100 Objects series from the . The latter have the advantage of a website containing images, text, and audio. The list below contains the most relevant works from the series.
