ATTRIDGE/VALENTINIAN AND SETHIAN APOCALYPSES 173 Valentinian and Sethian Apocalyptic Traditions* HAROLD W. ATTRIDGE The paper reexamines the relationship between “apocalyptic” and “gnostic” traditions, on the assumption that global definitions of these phenomena are problematic. Valentinian and Sethian corpora in the Nag Hammadi collection display different appropriations of apocalyptic literary forms and conceptual schemes. Apart from a few late works with traces of Valentinian positions, this tradition largely ignores features characteristic of apocalyptic literature. Valentinian eschatology seems to be founded primarily on philosophical cosmology and psychology. Sethian texts preserve many features of Jewish revelatory literature, and many details associated with various eschatological schemes familiar from apocalyptic sources. The most extensive use of the characteristic “heavenly ascent” topos in Sethian literature, however, seems to be a third-century development, perhaps responding to contemporary forms of religious propaganda. It has been almost forty years since R. M. Grant made his famous, and frequently discussed, suggestion that Gnosticism was born out of disap- pointed apocalyptic hopes.1 While containing an element of truth, the very formulation seems curiously dated. From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East
REVOLUTIONIZING REVOLUTIONIZING Mark Altaweel and Andrea Squitieri and Andrea Mark Altaweel From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East This book investigates the long-term continuity of large-scale states and empires, and its effect on the Near East’s social fabric, including the fundamental changes that occurred to major social institutions. Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern- day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/ seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at population movement as the main catalyst for social change. Among other infl uences, the effects of these transformations are today manifested in modern languages, concepts of government, universal religions and monetized and globalized economies. -

He left in 1933, when Hitler came into power, and in The Gnostic Religion 1940 joined the British Army in the Middle East. After the war he taught at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Carleton Uni- versity in Ottawa, finally settling in the United States. He was the Alvin Johnson Professor of Philosophy on the Graduate Fac- HANS JONAS ulty of Political and Social Science at the New School for Social Research in New York. 16 Australian Religion Studies Review The Diagram of the Ophites: a Synthesis Mark A. Vassallo, University of New England The Ophite Diagram: The Plight for Restoration. The term 'Ophite' derived from the Greek ophis (serpent), rather than being a self-designation was a title imposed upon this Gnostic movement by Christian writers. 1 These early Church fathers, who allowed a significant bias to pervade their work, portrayed the Ophites as a cult of serpent worship; even though the serpent played a minor role within the Ophite religious system. 2 This essay will focus on the work of one such Christian heresiologist, especially his exposition of an important facet of the Ophite tradition; the Ophite diagram - a blueprint that was instrumental in the ritual life of the Ophites and which reflects many of the sentiments of Gnosticism at large. Scholars perceive the diagram of the Ophites "as the classic account of the Gnostic-initiatory ascent through the spheres".3 Serving a dual function (i) it provides a comprehensive view of the Ophite cosmos, which in tum, (ii) elaborates the path an initiate travelled for communion with the Supreme God. Although invaluable to Ophite religious practices, no original sketch of the diagram exists today.4 The only evidence we have of the Ophite's diagram is the brief extract in Contra Celsum, written by the eminent Church father, Origen, in refutation of the heretical material produced by Celsus the Epicurean. 5 Celsus familiarised his audience with the belief system of this Gnostic sect, including the ritual use of a diagram that he outlined in his work.6 Any documents produced by Celsus have long since vanished and the selected excerpts in Contra Cetsum are all that remains. -

R.J. van der Spek VU University Amsterdam Introduction Cyrus, king of Persia (559-530 BC), conqueror of Babylon (539), has a good reputation, also among modern historians. Most textbooks, monographs, and articles on ancient history stress his tolerance towards the countries and nations he subdued. It is mentioned time and again that he allowed them freedom of religion, that he behaved respectfully towards Babylon and its temple cults, and that he reinstated several cults, especially that of the god of Israel in Jerusalem. This policy is often contrasted with that of the Assyrian kings, who are presented as cruel rulers, oppressing subdued nations, destroying sanctuaries, deporting gods and people, and forcing their subjects to worship Assyrian gods. Cyrus’ acts supposedly inaugurated a new policy, aimed at winning the subject nations for the Persian Empire by tolerance and clemency. It was exceptional that Cambyses and Xerxes abandoned this policy in Egypt and Babylonia. In the prestigious Cambridge Ancient History volume on Persia, T. Cuyler Young maintains that Cyrus’ policy “was one of remarkable tolerance based on a respect for individual people, ethnic groups, other religions and ancient kingdoms.” 2 1 This contribution is an update of my article “Cyrus de Pers in Assyrisch perspectief: Een vergelijking tussen de Assyrische en Perzische politiek ten opzichte van onderworpen volken,” Tijdschrift voor Geschiedenis 96 (1983): 1-27 (in Dutch, for a general audience of historians). -

Over the course of the last fifty years, scholars have supported three differing positions in regard to this subject. The first position seems to have originated in the work of Hans Martin Schenke who, in 1959, wrote about the "mystery of marriage" and the "bridechamber"in the Gospelof Philip.He understood the bridal chamber to be a ritual event in which the Valentinian couple symbolicallyenacted the consummation of their marriage through "a holy kiss."2Even though Schenke did not want to speculate about the ordinary marital practices of the Valentinians based on his interpretationof the bridal chamber, schol- ars who built on his work did. -

ISSN 2151-7800 (print), 2168-3166 (online) Abstract The Gospel of Philip, a Valentinian tractate found in the Nag Hammadi library, has sparked the interest of some Latter-day Saints because of its numerous refer- ences to a bridal chamber associated with the holy of holies in the temple (Gospel of Philip 69.14–70.4), such as to a “mirrored bridal chamber” (Gospel of Philip 65.12) and a sacred kiss (Gospel of Philip 59.1–5). The purpose of this paper is to examine the bridal chamber refer- ences within their Valentinian context. While there may be some interesting parallels with LDS teachings about eternal marriage, it is important to understand that the Valentinians understood these references in substantially different ways.
