Jonathan Agnew was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire and brought up on a farm in Stamford, Lincolnshire. He went to Uppingham School before becoming a professional cricketer with Leicestershire, for whom he played matches. He retired in to become cricket correspondent of Today newspaper and in succeeded Christopher Martin- Jenkins as the BBC's cricket Cricket: a Modern Anthology. Following the death of Brian Johnston in he became presenter of Test Match Special, commentating and reporting on the England cricket team around the world. He asks if Crawley could open on the same tours, but surely messing around with a player in this way is not conducive to developing a successful team. A fine fast bowler in his day, Aggers’ best first-class bowling figures were 9 for 70 and he took six ten-wicket hauls in 218 matches. During the 1980’s Jonathan Agnew played three Test Matches and three One Day Internationals for England before taking up his position in the commentary box. In 1987, Agnew began work with BBC Radio Leicester. He retired at the end of the 1990 season to become chief cricket writer of the Today newspaper, and was appointed BBC Cricket Correspondent at the start of the 1991 season. He was also the catalyst to Brian Johnston's infamous fit of the giggles after Ian Botham was out hit wicket - after failing to get "his leg over" which has been voted "the greatest piece of sporting commentary ever" in a BBC poll.
