Red Cross Society Flood and Land slide information bulletin No: 28-021082007

General Information: The monsoon started from the 10 July, 2007 and unrelenting precipitation to date has set off flood and landslide in 47 Districts the country. Some Districts are lightly affected and only deaths tolls are mentioned to comply with GoN statistics ( Kavre, Mustang, Chitawan and Sindhuli ). Relentless driving rain since the last three days has re- swamped several parts of Eastern and Western Districts ( Kailali, Bardiya, Banke, Siraha, Saptari, Rauthaut, Mohattari, Dhanusa, Bara, Parsa, Sarlahi ). People in the districts, who had been convalescing from the last month floods affects, have revived in the same phase as they were in. NRCS DC has started assessing situation being intentioned on coverage of affected families, their needs and additional damages. NRCS has mobilized its volunteers and staffs and been thoroughly checking on status of the affected beneficiaries (new and old flooded cases). Continued rain fall is hampering response to the old flood case and preliminary assessment and rapid response of the consecutive flood case. NRCS HQ is collecting information form these DC and will updates situation accordingly. Reports are received from Bardiya Chapter on the second flood affects.

Flood has affected Far Western District; Kailali , Mid Western Districts; Bankey, Bardiya and Dang , Western District; Nawalprasi and Rupendhei Eastern Districts; Sunsari, Morang Jhapa and Udayapur and Central Terai Districts; Rauthat , Bara , Parsa , siraha , Sarlahi , Saptari , Mohhatari , Dhanusa , Rauthat Whilst , Landslide has affected Baglung , Dolkha , Jajarkot , Puythan , Ramechhap, Saynga, surkhet, Dolakha, Dadeldhura, Shankhuwashaba, Dang, Surkhet, Gulmi, Parbat, Khotang, Dhading, Panchthar, Arghakachi, Darchula, Baitadi, Bhojpur, Makwanpur, Achham and Bajura Districts. Preliminary assessment carried out by NRCS DC has recognized that 146 people have died; displaced families are 22, 257 and over 78, 606 families have been affected, 4 are still missing and 94 are injured. Total 467, 742 people reportedly affected through the country . 46, 299 houses are partially and 24, 306 houses are completely destroyed. The assessment has highlighted immediate shelter, clean drinking water and food needs. General water and insect health complaints are being reported and needs to monitor closely to reduce additional outbreak of diseases. In Kalikot, 10 people died of diarrhea and 7 people are serious. NRCS DC has asked for monitoring situation closely to prevent additional breakouts.

NRCS DCs have mobilized staffs and volunteers teams for assessment and relief operation and detail assessment is being carried out by District Chapters. NRCS DCs has provided ready to eat food to 25, 000 families, covering estimated 150,000 individuals and NFRI to 9, 425 families. NRCS DC and HQ have been coordinating with local government authorities and other stakeholders to run relief and response operation. The comprehensive assessment is now on process in the Districts along with other partners at district level and reports are being received. The reports have envisaged; renovation of houses, re-storing public infrastructure, providing basic HH items, addressing livelihood options and providing staple food as long term needs. Government has requested WFP to feed 10000 families for three months. WFP and NRCS have concluded agreement and schedule for food distribution for Kailali, Bardiya and Banke and food distribution is in process. NRCS HQ is processing for making food distribution plan for Mahottari, Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusa, Bara, Rauthaut, .

The food distribution is started from 21 August, 2007. 4 Parsa 1 Municipality 1663 11627 2 - Initial assessment has been completed at 45 VDC by the six assessment team and 58 VDC deployed by the Chapter. However detailed reports are yet to be received as some villages are still in-accessible due to water logging 5 Bara 83 VDC and 3 969 5814 - - NRCS DC has mobilized three assessment teams for affected VDC and Municipality assessment is still in process. Initial assessment pointed out 400 additional affected families and NRCS has dispatched 330 NFRI kits to cover Amiratgunj, Inurwamal and Hardiya VDC. 6 Rauthaut 86 VDC and 1 2242 15983 6 705 NRCS has mobilized 10 assessment teams. Assessment is completed in 58 Municipality VDC and 1 Municipality and assessment in remaining 38VDC is in process. Assessment is being hampered by transitional conflict. Some cases of fever, diarrhea has been recorded (number still not confirmed). 10 schools and one health post are partially destroyed. Similarly, two culverts and 50 kilometer link road is washed away by flood. Crops planted 500 hectare land is completely destroyed. Estimated loss is around NRs.1,00,000,000 7 Siraha 80 VDC and 2 10004 57037 3 1680 Total 80 VDC and 2 Municipality are affected, of which 17VDC are most municipality affected. Assessment is completed in all VDC and two municipalities. NRCS DC together with other stakeholders has formed 13 assessment teams. 5000 Hectare of agriculture land is covered with sand and planted paddy is destroyed. Five link roads to the several villages are destroyed. Four schools are partially damaged.

NRCS has stock of 353 NFRI kits, 390 tarpaulins, Water purification tablets- 1307 and RTEF for 425 families 8 Saptari 96 VDC 11538 67717 3 8312 Assessment is completed in 89 VDC. Total 1862 families are affected and more than 303 houses are destroyed. Two schools (Hardeni VD and Hayardanda VDC) and six water scheme at Tapeshori VDC completely destroyed. 11 Dhanusa 75 VDC and 1 12082 68609 3 5311 NRCS has established six different distribution center (yadukuha, Parabaha, municipality dhanusa Dham, Municipality and Bengadabar), covering all affected VDC.

NRCS has been distributing rice-5 kg, pulse-1 kg, beaten rice- 2kg, sugar-1 kg, tarpaulin-1 pcs, candle and match box-1 pcs, noodles-1 packet, utensil-1 set, water purification liquid-1 bottle and clothes-1 set to families who lost complete HH items and same set without tarpaulins to the families with partially destroyed HH. Distribution is in process. NRCS DC has asked additional 513 tarpaulins set. 12 Nawalprasi 13 VDC and 1 2, 089 7, 200 - 632 Total 2,089 families are affected. 100 Hectare Ag. Land destroyed. NRCS Municipality Makar SC has distributed rice, pulse, oil and salt to the affected families of Makar and Bethani VDC. NRCS/DC is holding a meeting with DFID, RRN, GTZ, SAD, ICRC, DDC and CDO on 3 August, 2007 for securing immediate needs of the victims 24 Khotang 13 VDC 24 144 - - Debris flow affected 24 families. (Situation is normal). 25 Panchthar 7 VDC 254 1175 1 - Total 254 families are affected. NRCS has deployed assessment team with NFRI kits. The affected sites are in the remote area and detailed report will take some days to come. 26 Dhading 2 VDC 80 481 - - Total 481 people of 80 families are affected. DC report confirmed that Health post, VDC police office, NRCS SC Phulkharaka and VDC office of Phulkharka VDC is destroyed. Similarly, small scale drinking water scheme are destroyed and more than 100 hectare of land dumped by debris flow. Estimated loss is around 3 million. 27 Arghakachi 9 VDC 467 2971 - - Total 2971 people of 467 families affected by landslide triggered at 9 different VDC. NRCS DC has asked for 250 NFRI kits 28 Baitadi 4 VDC 250 1750 8 86 Total 250 families are affected and 86 families are displaced due to landslide at Srikot VDC. 150 families are in potential danger. Partners and Coordination: Swiss Red Cross is in process to provide NRs. 350, 000 to Dhanusa and Mahottari and NRs. 250, 00o for Banke and Bardiya Chapter. Constraints: Revived rain falls in the western and Eastern Terai District might affect flood response operation and potential to add number of affected families followed by loss in personal belongings and public establishments. NRCS DC are processing assessment with other partners as discussed in district disaster relief committee. Transportation and delivery of relief material in some part of the affected VDCs are still hindered due to bad condition of road network. Temporary shelter, ready to eat food and clean drinking water is demanding issue and primary need of the affected families. NRCS is managing ready to eat food to the affected families from the support of different Districts and National level stakeholders including Nepal Government.
