they must be getting the ball down to you sw=eetly? DS: Yeah nah it’s good, it’s been good this year I been…number one forward so, it’s alright, yeah. Yeah-no is an element of speech in English which has come to the attention of speakers relatively recently. Like many linguistic elements it had been in existence for quite a period of time before it became noticed and, for many people, before it became irritating (Burridge, 2005). It became the object of derisive letters to the editor, labelled “speech-junk” in opinion pieces (Campbell, 2004) and was defended only by linguists such as Burridge who advocated its worth in oral discourse as a discourse marker. Yeah- no is often associated with the “sport speak” of less experienced competitors in interviews, and this has given this small token a negative image (Burridge, 2005, p. 6). Burridge (2005) claimed that yeah-no was “rampant” in the Antipodes, particularly Australia and New Zealand, and was recently detected in the UK. The preliminary observations of the present study confirmed the established presence of yeah-no in Australia and New Zealand but also suggested that it is used in other Englishes such as British and American, as evidenced by its appearance in scripted films and television from these countries. The intrigue surrounding yeah-no stems from its seemingly contradictory

Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production.

When we were down the hole one day, I remember tapping Brant on the shoulder and asking him if he thought we’d make the front page of The [Launceston] Examiner, our local paper. Then we get out and Oprah wants to interview us! Todd Russell1 I would like my life to settle down and to be normal again … Before we could go outside and there would be no cameras on us but now cameras follow Dad and everyone wants his autograph … And I wish the media would mind its business because they say things that are not true. Maddison Russell (Todd Russell’s daughter, from a writing competition)2 — Introduction By the time this article sees print, the events at Beaconsfield, Tasmania will have joined a backlog of similar news moments, largely unremembered by all but those who were personally affected by what happened there. Yet for fourteen days in mid-2006 this small mining town became, like so many places before it, ‘the network executive’s best friend’3 and an indication of a significant change in the way television news is reported and packaged in Australia. At 9.23 pm, on 25 April (Anzac Day), a rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine killed miner Larry Knight (his body was recovered two days later). On 30 April, two miners—Todd Russell and Brant Webb—were discovered to still be alive one kilometre underground.

In a cute little story, Herman even endeavours to find a disaster proof shell. The site also contains on-line resources for parents and teachers such as curriculum items and safety information that can be used in the classroom or at home. The Australian Civil Defence School circa 1951. In July 1951, the Director of Civil Defence prepared a paper outlining the need for a school devoted to instruction in civil defence. Chasing reporters: Infotainment, intertextuality and media satire. © Copyright 2009 Stephen Harrington Chasing Reporters: Infotainment, Intertextuality and Media Satire STEPHEN HARRINGTON Queensland University of Technology, Australia ABSTRACT The Chaser’s War on Everything was a night time entertainment program which screened on Australia’s public broadcaster, the ABC in 2006 and 2007. This enormously successful comedy show managed to generate a lot of controversy in its short lifespan (see, for example, Dennehy, 2007; Dubecki, 2007; McLean, 2007; Wright, 2007), but also drew much praise for its satirising of, and commentary on, topical issues. Through interviews with the program’s producers, qualitative audience research and textual analysis, this paper will focus on this show’s media satire, and the segment ‘What Have We Learned From Current Affairs This Week?’ in particular. Viewed as a form of ‘Critical Intertextuality’ (Gray, 2006), this segment (which offered a humorous critique of the ways in which news and current affairs are presented elsewhere on television) may equip citizens with a better understanding of the new genre’s production methods, thus producing a higher level of public media literacy. This paper argues that through its media satire, The Chaser acts not as a traditional news program would in informing the public with new information, but as a text which can inform and shape our understanding of news that already exists within the public sphere. Humorous analyses and critiques of the media (like those analysed in this paper), are in fact very important forms of infotainment, because they can provide “other, ‘improper,’ and yet more media literate and savvy interpretations” (Gray, 2006, p.

    Naomi Robson MC, Host, Speaker and Media Trainer Former news anchor Naomi Robson became well known to the Australian public during her ten years as presenter of Today Tonight – a public affairs program on the Seven Network which moved up the rankings to become the Number 1 program in its timeslot. During her time as anchor – between 1997 and 2006 – Naomi reported on numerous world events including the Anniversary of the September 11 attacks in New York and the Bali bombings. Naomi first appeared on Australian television in 1991 as a news reporter for Seven News and held various roles as a presenter, anchor, hosting and narrator during her years with the network. She has also hosted numerous awards ceremonies as well as charity events including Breast Cancer History Variety – the Children’s Charity, The Allanah and Madeline Foundation – for the child victims of violent crime, Mirabel Foundation – for the child victims of parental drug abuse and The Ron Evans Golf Day – raising money for research into bowel cancer for the Monash Institute of Medical Research. Limited A.B.N. 91 004 433 265 – Quality System Certified to AS/NZS ISO 9001 Finding No. 4195 Available on Website: www.roymorgan.com On August 13, 2007 LARGE MAJORITY OF AUSTRALIANS THINK THE MEDIA IS “OFTEN BIASED” A large majority of Australians believe that most forms of media in Australia are ‘often biased’, a special Roy Morgan telephone survey finds. The survey also finds a majority of Australians believe newspaper and TV journalists and talk-back radio announcers ‘often get their facts wrong’. Large majorities believe that newspaper and TV journalists ‘invade people’s privacy unnecessarily’. However, they are divided on whether the media are ‘too left-wing leaning’ or ‘too right-wing leaning’. Media Bias A large 85% (down 1% since September 2004) of Australians believe that Newspaper journalists are often biased, 74% (up 1%) believe TV reporters are often biased and 69% (down 6%) believe that Talk-back radio announcers are often biased. The only form of mainstream media to escape the condemnation of the majority (and only just) is the Internet – 49% (up 8%) of Australians believe Internet sites are often biased. Of all journalists, it is the Talk-back hosts who are most likely to be regarded as often biased. Almost a quarter of Australians (23.5%, down 5%) think John Laws is often biased (29.5% in NSW, down 7.5%) and more than one-in-five (20.5%, down 5.5%) believe that Alan Jones is often biased (29.5% in NSW, down 12%).
