I am Maryann Barlett, a Spiritual Mentor for the Diocese of Kansas City- St. Jo- seph. My husband Ed and I have been married for 37 years, and we are the parents of 4 exceptional adults; Fr. Barlett is our middle son. At the encouragement of Fr. Rogers, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I will begin to offer a Grief Aposto- late. Why a Grief Apostolate, because it is needed at St. Andrew the Apostle. Many members of our parish family are hurting and we wish to offer comfort, support, understanding and guidance, in a prayerful setting. We will meet monthly, on the third Tuesday, beginning Oct 17th, from 6:30-8 PM, in Room 113. One definition of grief is the normal process of reacting to a loss. A personal experience of loss may include death of a loved one, the ending of an important relationship, a serious medi- cal diagnosis, job loss, or the loss of independence through disability. These struggles of sharp sorrow or painful regret are Holy Ground, and with the aid of scripture, prayer and conversation, healing can be found. Psalm 34:19-20- The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed. Many are the troubles of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him from them all. APOLOGETICS CORNER: This question is a commonly posed one by our Protestant brethren. How would you respond should you be asked?

Q: We have a very good friend who's a "Bible-Only" Christian. I try my best to be polite, explaining the best I can about what Catholic-Christians believe. During Lent, I took her to the Stations of the at our parish, since her church "didn't do much before Easter." She seemed to enjoy it, even kneeling at the appropriate times (after several stations). However, when we got in the car, she questioned me on Veronica - saying she is not in the Bible and so on. How should I respond about Veronica? I am a convert of 12 years, so I'm comfortable with Sacred Scripture/Tradition, but our friend was really bothered by the fact that there is no "Biblical" evidence for Station 6. A. You can start by telling her that the tradition of Veronica and the stations of the cross dates back to the earliest centuries of Christianity. No, nothing about her in the Bible. But, not everything that happened during ’ Passion is recorded in Scripture. For example, the Bible doesn't tell us which shoulder Jesus carried His cross on. So, what if a movie shows Jesus carrying His cross on His left shoulder, when He actually carried it on His right shoulder? Or vice versa? Is that necessarily a bad thing? To believe that the only things that happened to and around Jesus during His passion are the things recorded in the Bible, is to leave a whole lot of gaps in the story. The Bible simply doesn't cover 100% of what happened. So, are we necessarily wrong to believe Veronica wiped Jesus' face, just because the Bible says nothing about it? Even the Bible itself tells us in Jn. 21:25 that it’s not even reasonably possible to record everything that happened in the life of Christ “There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think that whole world would contain the books that would be written.” I would simply ask her if she believes that everything that happened to Jesus during His Passion is recorded in the Bible? If she says, "Yes," then go through one of the accounts of the Passion and ask her why it only takes a few minutes to read about every single thing that happened to Jesus in a period of time that is somewhere around 16-20 hours long. If she says, "No," that not everything that happened to Jesus during His Passion is in the Bible, then I would ask her if that doesn’t mean it is at least possible that Veronica did indeed wipe Jesus' face on His way to . She pretty much has to say yes, that it is a "possibility." If she says, "No," it's not at least a possibility, then I would ask her why. If she says, "It's not in the Bible,” then go back to the 1st question above. If she says, "Yes," it could have happened, then simply tell her that it is not an article of the Catholic Faith that it did indeed happen. But, based upon the best information we have, we believe this 2000-yr. old tradition to be true. Therefore, we use this tradition as a point of meditation and prayer. It's just that simple. One doesn't have to believe that Veronica wiped the face of Christ in order to be Catholic. And, if she didn't wipe His face, that still doesn't nullify the prayers we pray at that particular station of the cross. God knows our intent and our hearts and He uses our prayers regardless of whether Veronica actually wiped the face of Christ or not.

Exciting News! We are introducing our First Woman Religious from St. Andrew’s! Instead of the usual seminarian collection, we will take up a second collection for Jenna the weekend of October 7 & 8.

Hi, my name is Jenna Prather and I have been a parishioner of St. Andrew’s for just over 2 years now. I am a Kansas City native, attending St. Charles Borromeo Grade School and St. Pius X High School. I went on to attend Benedictine College in Atchison, KS and it was during my senior year that I first felt God calling me to pursue religious life. I spent the next two years actively discerning where it was that God was calling me to give my life. Unfortunately, in the midst of these two years I became discouraged and my stubbornness got in the way of allowing me to be open to where God was leading me, and the following two years were spent actively avoiding anything related to discernment. Luckily, God is persistent! When I first came to St. Andrew’s I got involved with the youth group as a volunteer, which led me to driving a van full of girls up to Nebraska over Christmas Break for a “Nun Run” where we visited a few convents and spent time getting to know the sisters and how they lived their life. It was on this trip that I was first introduced to the Missionary Benedictine Sisters in Norfolk, NE. This trip stirred in my heart that call I had first felt four years prior. It made me start to think about where and how God was calling me to live my life. The following year (December of 2016) I once again volunteered for the “Nun Run” and it was while I was there that Sr. Inviolata (their Vocations Director) really challenged me to open my heart and allow God to guide me on the path He wanted me to take. When I allowed God into that part of my heart I felt such great peace and after taking a few more trips to visit the sisters, I know that this was where God is calling me to live my life. The charism of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters is “to proclaim the Gospel among people who do not know Christ, where Christ is not sufficiently known, and where the Church is in need.” They do this is a variety of ways, some of which include: running youth ministry programs in Norfolk, ministering to the Native American tribes in Winnebago, teaching in local high schools and running a Spirituality/Retreat Center at the monastery. The sisters truly embody what it means to give everything over to God. When I am with them I feel such great peace and joy. I know that there will be difficult days, but I also know that with God all things are possible and that He will not leave or abandon me. I am very excited to continue on this journey that God has laid before me and I ask for your prayers and assistance as I continue to follow where the Lord leads me. My entrance date has been set for January 15, 2018.
