Mix of psychology students, plus the presence of major training programs such NYU Langone Psychiatric fellows in Child Psychiatry, as well as Social Work students adds a great deal of excitement and enrichment to this training program. Each extern can work with a multi-disciplinary team of professional such as psychiatrists, teachers, nurses and social workers, as well as student trainees from these professions.

The major goal of the externship is to provide an intensive and broad-based experience to the developing clinician in working with emotionally disturbed children and adolescents and their families in an inpatient treatment setting. The trainee will be able to work with patients of varying ages, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and types and degrees of pathology. While the hospital holds an overall family systems theoretical background, many treatment approaches, including behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Interpersonal, and psychodynamic, are used to deal with a very challenging patient population.

Psychological Assessments: As part of the comprehensive treatment plan of each patient admitted to RCPC, a complete psychological evaluation is completed. The student will be trained in the administration and interpretation of various intellectual, visual-motor, projective (Figure Drawings, Sentence Completion, TAT and Rorschach (Exner Scoring) and self-report measures (MACI, MMPI-RF, BASC) of patient functioning. In addition, Adaptive Functioning evaluation, Risk Assessments (Fire setting and Violence Risk) and Sexual safety Assessments are done as needed.

Patient Treatment: The trainee will be assigned to one of the inpatient units. As part of the treatment team, the extern will be assigned one to two cases for which they will act as the primary clinician and treatment coordinator. The student will participate in individual, family and group therapy sessions with the patient and will coordinate a behavior modification program for the patient.

Psychology Rounds and Case Conferences: The Psychology Rounds and case conferences are hour-long presentations made by psychology department staff. The topic of presentation might be a case review, a discussion of psychological treatment modalities, and review psychological testing.

Seminars and Conferences: There are weekly seminars for all trainees. The hospital’s Education and Training Department organizes monthly Grand Rounds presentations in conjunction with NYU Langone Psychiatry Department.

Stony Brook University Consortium Externship Program The Stony Brook University Consortium Externship Program (SBU-CEP) offers a 12-month pre- doctoral externship in clinical psychology to qualified and advanced students in doctoral psychology programs. The SBU-CEP includes two-member agencies: the Leonard Krasner Psychological Center (KPC), a psychology training clinic associated with the doctoral program in clinical psychology, Department of Psychology (College of Arts and Sciences), and the Mind Body Clinical Research Center (MB-CRC), an outpatient facility associated with the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health (Stony Brook Medicine). The SBU-CEP complies with the externship applications and acceptances guidelines developed by the Directors of New York State (PSYDNYS) and the New York New Jersey Association of Directors of Training (NYNJADOT). Information about the SBU-CEP is included in the brochure uploaded on the L. Krasner Psychological Center website, as well as in the list of NYNJ externship sites uploaded on the APA site: https://nynjadot.apa.org. The overall aim of the SBU-CEP is to train and educate psychology externs to practice professional psychology competently and based on a clinical scientist model. The training philosophy is informed by the Evidence Based Practice in Psychology approach, which encompasses the notion that best practice is based on the integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of key patient characteristics (including culture, diversity, and preferences). A scientifically-minded approach informs every aspect of the SBU- CEP program. The SBU-CEP is designed to provide externs with generalist training and experience in delivering services to diverse adult and child patient populations, across various therapeutic settings, including outpatient mental health facilities and hospital-based programs. Training includes experience in delivering cognitive-behavior therapy (including elements of third-wave models), behavioral medicine, and integrated care in primary care settings primarily with adult populations; however, opportunities to provide assessment and treatment services to youth, adolescent, and young adult populations are available at the KPC and MB-CRC sites. Several supervised practicum opportunities are available through the main externship programs at the KPC, MB-CRC and its associated program(s), as described in a later section of this brochure. Based on the available supervisory resources, as well as current needs of the facilities involved in the SBU-CEP (e.g., space) and availability of patient populations, the content of the practicum will be tailored to each extern's level of experience and clinical interests.

General Information The externship includes approximately 16 hours of training weekly, including direct face-to-face delivery of psychological services, didactics/clinical workshops, supervision, readings, and administrative responsibilities. The CUNY, Graduate Center Student Counseling Services The Student Counseling Service at the GC Wellness Center offers counseling to the 4,000 doctoral and masters students at the CUNY Graduate Center. Externs provide short-term psychotherapy -- 12 sessions of psychodynamic/CBT/integrative therapy to individuals and couples -- as well as group therapy, academic consultations, and outreach seminars, during our year-long, 15 hour per week externship. Training is a major goal of our Center; we are careful not to over-load externs' schedules. We provide 2 hours per week of supervision and a weekly 2.5 hour didactic and case presentation meeting that focuses on short-term dynamic therapy and CBT, as well as other relevant topics (mandatory, held Fridays 10:00 -12:30).

It means a lot to us that our externs consistently rate our program as one of the best they have experienced, providing an unusual depth of training and support.

When not operating remotely during the pandemic, the Graduate Center is conveniently located in midtown Manhattan, at the corner of 34th Street and 5th Avenue, readily accessible by subway, Metro North and PATH trains. Individual extern schedules are worked out based on your time availability, although everyone is required to attend our seminar, from 10 to 12:30 on Fridays.

AHRC NYC The pre-doctoral psychology internship program at AHRC-NYC was established in 1995 with the goal of training professional psychologists in the field of developmental disabilities. The program’s mission, in accord with AHRC-NYC’s overall mission, is to provide psychology doctoral students with the opportunity to grow from a level of the mastery of basic concepts of evaluation and treatment of psychopathology to an awareness of, and eventually expertise in, those concepts and how they apply to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. By the completion of internship, an intern is prepared to independently assess and treat these individuals as well as work effectively in concert with other treating professionals from medical, rehabilitative, educational and other mental health disciplines.

CARES CARES represents a diverse experience as we treat underserved populations of Chinese and Hispanic immigrant families along with the broad range of New York City residents. CARES’ programs employ multidisciplinary teams of Psychologists, Social Workers, Board Certified Behavior Analysts, Speech Pathologists, Physical Therapists, and Psychiatrists. This approach affords interns a rich array of opportunities for collaborative learning and leads to a more holistic understanding of the individual from various facets. Designed in the Practitioner-Scholar Model, the program consists of varied training experiences to facilitate a smooth transition from doctoral study to professional functioning, through the acquisition of advanced clinical skills that integrate theory and practice. Interns receive intensive training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), cognitive-behavioral therapy, diagnostic testing and comprehensive report writing. Interns carry caseloads of children, adolescents and/or adults, and provide services to groups and families.

The Internship Experience Interns will be engaged in three of CARES’ programs – Early Intervention/Insurance Based ABA Programs, Clinical Services, and Adult Day Habilitation.

The Hand in Hand Early Intervention/Insurance Based ABA programs serve approximately 300 children and families each year. Early intervention services are provided, to children ranging in age from birth to 3 years, in a variety of settings, including the child’s home, community locations, and our early childhood centers. In addition, when clinically justified, services may be provided in the community such as a daycare, playground, supermarket, or other appropriate community settings. Our Early Intervention Centers provide curriculum-based classroom instruction using the principles of ABA. Methods include Discrete Trial Training, Natural Environment Teaching, and Social Skills Groups for toddlers who are diagnosed with Autism. Interns receive rigorous training in the theory and practice of ABA, provided by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) at the beginning of the internship year. After completion of the training, interns are assigned their own cases where they deliver behavioral services to young children as well as provide counseling support for parents and caregivers. Intern’s training and supervision in ABA may also occur with children enrolled in the home-based insurance program, for children who have already aged out of the Early Intervention Program, depending on the best match of age, the family’s language and culture.

This enriches the interns’ opportunity to deliver varied therapeutic modalities for individuals across the life span, supporting clients and their families, as well as learning to provide group interventions. In addition, interns will develop clinical proficiency in the theories and methods of psychological assessment and diagnosis. They will administer comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for individuals across the life span with Autism, Intellectual, Developmental Disabilities and those presenting with a variety of mental health conditions.

Adult Day Habilitation program serves post-secondary school students with a variety of developmental disabilities in center and community-based settings. Community and day habilitation programs focus on developing and enhancing skills in areas such as activities of daily living, communication and social interactions, prevocational training, and self-advocacy. Interns will be trained in a variety of community locations. These can include recreational sites and trips to places of interest. In this program, interns will be trained in providing individual and group therapy to decrease challenging behaviors, develop treatment plans to achieve personal goals, support individuals to participate in integrated community settings, and provide behavioral consultations.

Supervision of Interns - Intern supervision is provided by CARES staff members or by qualified affiliates of CARES with clinical responsibility for the client. Interns receive regularly scheduled and intensive supervision, including two hours of individual supervision and two hours of group supervision provided by licensed psychologists throughout the internship year. Interns also receive additional weekly one hour supervision from a BCBA.

Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut The Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut functions under the auspices of Community Health Centers, a Federally-Qualified Health Center which provides integrated care to all, regardless of ability to pay. JCCA JCCA is a child welfare agency that currently accommodates more than 16,000 children and their families in its various programs across the five boroughs and Westchester. Our internship and externship training programs span three sites: the Brooklyn and Bronx locations serve children and adolescents living in foster homes in the community, whereas the Pleasantville Campus serves young people living in residential care. Regardless of site placement, our primary training objective is to prepare trainees for future clinical practice in child and adolescent psychology. Through individual and group supervision, seminars and team collaboration, interns and externs develop the skills of individual therapy, group therapy, and assessment. Furthermore, our interns and externs leave their training year with a comprehensive understanding of the child welfare system and the specific needs of the children and families who function within this system. In addition, individuals who train at JCCA are prepared to recognize, understand and address the impact of the complex trauma that youth and families in underserved populations encounter. We recognize that there is a need for more trained clinicians to address the unique needs of such youth.

JCCA’s many programs target largely underserved families from lower socioeconomic statuses which are comprised largely of African- and Caribbean- American and Latinx populations. Many of the children and adolescents we serve are in foster or residential care because of challenges within the family, including emotional disturbance, substance dependence, and transgenerational trauma. The agency provides behavioral health, casework, aftercare, medical, nursing, education, and psychiatric services to children and families. Thus, interns and externs are exposed to different perspectives from which to view and understand each child with whom they work.

We invite you to review our brochure here. Although the brochure is primarily targeted toward internship applicants, most of the information can be applied to externship applicants as well.

The elective rotation can be on one of the following sites: Rehabilitation Medicine, Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Center/Detox, Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Assessment Service, Adult/Pediatric Consultation Liaison Service and Bariatric Surgery Program. The Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program is an additional training option that can be combined with one of the other elective rotations. A cross-site rotation at NCB on the Partial Hospital Program or the Inpatient Geriatric Unit is also available.

Year-long outpatient placements at JMC are available on the Adult/Geriatric Outpatient Service, the Pediatric Service, the Family Advocacy Program or the Adult/Pediatric HIV Primary Care Service (ACS/PCS). The ideal caseload consists of 5 individual cases, 1 group and 1 family/couple. All services include collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

A regular shuttle service links the two sites, which are separated by an approximately 15 minute ride. While there are some differences in the structure of the programs and in certain electives, a core emphasis at both sites is the inpatient psychiatry experience where each intern functions as a primary therapist. It is our belief that an intensive inpatient experience is invaluable for whatever work trainees choose to do in the future. The experience has a significant impact on sharpening diagnostic and decision-making skills, and leads to greater ease in working with the wide range of human experiences. As a general hospital, NCB is distinguished as one of the first city hospitals to offer a primary care model for ambulatory care as well as for its innovative midwifery program in OB-GYN. It is also the first hospital in New York State to be approved as a SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) center of excellence. NCB has an impressive scope of Behavioral Healthcare Services. These services include two 25-bed acute inpatient units, a 14-bed geriatric inpatient unit (age 55+), an adult outpatient mental health service, an adult psychiatric emergency service including consultation/liaison services and a Partial Hospital Program (six-week day program for acutely ill psychiatric patients).

NYC H+H: Jacobi Medical Center NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx (Jacobi and NCB) provide a comprehensive APA-Accredited Psychology Internship Training Program with two training sites. We have 13 internship positions, 6 at NCB and 7 at Jacobi. The unified program is overseen by a Network Training Director, a Site Training Director, and a Network- wide Training Committee. The Network is academically affiliated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Also known as The North Bronx Healthcare Network Internship Program, our program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for the American Psychological Association since 1990.

The comprehensive psychiatric services and large faculty at each site bring a wide range of specialized training and theoretical orientations to the training program. The programs at each site are essentially similar with a shared philosophy of training and similar training experiences. Interns are interviewed and selected for a specific site that serves as their home base throughout the training year. There are cross-site seminars and interns may elect specific cross- site rotations and training activities. A regular shuttle bus service links the two sites, which are approximately a 15-minute ride apart.

The Internship Program encompasses a Practitioner model. Our philosophy of training is to provide Interns with an intensive and wide ranging clinical training experience in a multicultural urban hospital setting. Our primary mode of teaching is through an Apprenticeship model. Our

NYU/Bellevue Clinical Psychology Internship Program The NYU-Bellevue Predoctoral Psychology Internship Program consists of three tracks: The Adult Psychology Track provides interns with experience in psychotherapy and assessment from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Although there is an emphasis on clinical work with adults, interns work with a diverse spectrum of patients in terms of age, demographics and clinical presentation. The Child & Adolescent Psychology Track operates in collaboration with the Hassenfeld Children's Hospital at NYU Langone-Child Study Center, which emphasizes training in empirically-based, cognitive-behavioral interventions with children and families. Interns will also carry a small adult caseload, and will see child and adolescent patients at both NYC Health & Hospitals/Bellevue and the NYU Child Study Center. The Forensic Track operates in collaboration with the Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center, a maximum-security state psychiatric/correctional facility located on Ward's Island. Training, which occurs both at Bellevue and Kirby, will emphasize the assessment and treatment of patients who have concurrent involvement in the legal/penal systems. Interns will also carry a caseload of non-forensic patients in various modalities. Despite the existence of separate tracks, the internship is one cohesive program. All 14 interns will gain experience treating adults, adolescents and children in individual, group and/or family modalities. Interns will participate together in meetings with the program director, seminars, colloquia, case conferences and a support group. All interns complete three four-month rotations, chosen from a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient options at Health & Hospitals/Bellevue, the NYU Child Study Center, and the Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center. Electives are available to the Adult Track Interns.

Please see our website here for specific rotations and electives offered.

Stony Brook University Consortium Internship Program The Stony Brook University Consortium Internship Program (SBU-CIP) offers a full-time, 12- month, doctoral internship in clinical psychology to qualified students in doctoral psychology programs. The SBU-CIP includes two-member agencies: the Leonard Krasner Psychological Center (KPC), a psychology training clinic associated with the doctoral program in clinical psychology, Department of Psychology (College of Arts and Sciences), and the Mind Body Clinical Research Center (MB-CRC), an outpatient facility associated with the Department of Psychiatry (Stony Brook Medicine). Although completely distinct in administration and location, both member agencies are part of the Stony Brook University (SBU). The SBU-CIP is partially affiliated with the SBU doctoral program in clinical psychology.

The overall aim of the SBU-CIP is to train and educate psychology interns to practice professional psychology competently based on a clinical scientist model. The training philosophy is informed by the Evidence Based Practice in Psychology (EBPP) approach, which encompasses the notion that best practice is grounded in the integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of key patient characteristics (including culture, diversity, and preferences). A scientifically-minded approach informs every aspect of the SBU- CIP program. The patient population includes children, adolescents, and adults. For this upcoming training year, there are 4 adult track positions and 1 child track position available.

The SBU-CIP is designed to provide interns with training and experiences in delivering services across various settings, including outpatient mental health facilities and hospital-based programs (e.g., psychiatric emergency medicine, inpatient psychiatry, and consultation/liaison). Training includes experience in delivering cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT), including elements of third-wave CBT models, behavioral medicine, integrated care in primary care settings, and in-hospital consultation and liaison services.

The SBU-CIP is committed to providing interns with the necessary training that will enable them to develop and strengthen “generalist” skills. This is accomplished through instruction, supervision, and direct clinical experience in a wide spectrum of functions engaged in by a professional psychologist, including psychological assessment/evaluation, provision of psychotherapy services to clinical populations, supervision of others, and consultation and liaison services. An additional aim of the SBU-CIP is to train interns to fulfill their professional responsibilities upholding the highest standards of professional conduct and in ways that are thoughtful, compassionate, skillful, culturally sensitive, and ethical.

The SBU-CIP emphasizes the continual professional development of interns by building upon their existing skills and competencies and providing them with additional training in evidence- based methods. Each main program or rotation is designed to provide interns with training that is sequential, cumulative, and graded in complexity. Upon completion of the internship, SBU- CIP interns will have acquired the knowledge, skills, and professionalism to move to the post- doctoral resident level. The goals of SBU-CIP are accomplished by capitalizing on the academic training resources and the professional expertise of the SBU faculty. To this end, the two member agencies, the KPC and the MB-CRC, have pooled resources to deliver a training and experiential program that provides interns with a breadth and depth of training.
