ABSTRACT The research was conducted as survey research. The objectives were: to study, survey, analyze and synthesize the situation of Home Stay Tourism; to create the criteria for management evaluation of Thai Home Stay; and to evaluate the potential of Home Stay Tourism management beneath the Thai Home Stay Standard. The criteria creation for management evaluation of Thai Home Stay was based on Thai Home Stay standard of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports using 8 standards and 43 indicators. There are 7 Accommodation indicators, 6 Food and Nutrition indicators, 5 Security indicators, 7 Management indicators, 6 Tourism activities indicators, 4 Environment indicators, 4 Value-added indicators and 3 Marketing supporting indicators. Questionnaires, a structural interview form, Home Stay assessable form and Check-list form were used as tools for data collection. The 6 Home Stay targets were Sasorm village, Thalong village, Tamui village, Wernbueg village, Kaengtana village and Nongchard village. The Survey was done with tourists who travelled during December 2006. The duration of this research was between November 2006 and April 2007. The research finding showed that Sasorm Home Stay and Nongchard Home Stay were at an excellent level, Thalong Home Stay, Tamui Home Stay and Wernbueg Home Stay were at a good level, but Kaengtana Home Stay must be improved. The Home Stay targets showed that there were 112 households (20.82%) opening houses for tourists from a total of 538 households and the rest (79.18%) have the potential to run Home Stay business in the future. Recommendations from this study are the two excellent Home Stay villages should continuously maintain their standards and open to tourists all season. The three good Home Stay villages should upgrade to an excellent level and one Home Stay village must be improved by using standard criteria of Thai Home Stay. The recommendations for future research are study on other households that do not open as Home Stay Tourism investigating whether they have carrying capacity to run a business or not. The findings can be used to plan Home Stay Management for the areas that do not meet the standard criteria of Thai Home Stay standards.     Preserving Temple Murals in Isan: Wat Chaisi, Sawatthi Village, Khon Kaen, as a Sustainable Model1 Bonnie Pacala Brereton Abstract—Wat Chaisi in Sawatthi village, Sawatthi District, located about twenty kilometers from the bustling provincial capital of Khon Kaen, is a unique example of local cultural heritage preservation that was accomplished solely through local stakeholders. Its buildings, as well as the 100 year-old murals on the ordination hall, have been maintained and are used regularly for merit- making and teaching. The effort was initiated by the abbot and is maintained through the joint effort of the wat community, Khon Kaen Municipality, and various individuals and faculties at Khon Kaen University. This paper will examine the role of local leadership in promoting local cultural heritage. Introduction Of the more than 40,000 Buddhist wats in Thailand seventeen percent, or nearly 7,000, are abandoned.2 Of those still in use, many are becoming increasingly crammed with seemingly superfluous new structures, statues, and decorations, funded by people seeking fame or improvement in their karmic status. Still others are thriving because of the donations they attract through their association with what is sometimes called “popular Buddhism,” a hodgepodge of beliefs in magical monks, amulets, saints, and new rituals aimed at bringing luck and financial success (Pattana 2012). Yet countless others are in a moribund state, in some cases tended by one or two elderly, frail monks who lack the physical and financial resources to maintain them. Due to the long and continuing protests against Pak Mun Dam, the project is one of the most outstanding cases that capture the interest of the civil society in local, national and international context. The case is also considered as one of the longest social movements by grassroot people in Thailand and the world. With this concern and the growing interest in administrative restructure in developing countries, many political scientists and economists have argued that social capital is an important determinant of economic development and of the functioning of institutions. Social capital has commonly been studied in recent years from the perspective of sociology and political science; however, social capital alone cannot explain all of the phenomena to which it has been related. Thus, much more needs to be known about how social capital is related to various affecting factors and what the indicators and benefits of social capital are. In this dissertation, the goal of the study was to explore empirically one particular concept of “social capital” concerning whether it really exists and through what indicators formed in Thai rural communities. Secondly, through different case studies it would be possible to identify the degrees of social capital in different sub- districts. Thirdly, within the political perspective the study will find out whether social capital benefits or affects the choice of local leadership.

Insecticide resist- ance in malaria vectors has been detected in a few countries in the Greater Mekong sub-region (GMS), representing a threat to malaria control and prevention. This study aims to determine the insecticide resistance status of Anopheles mosquitoes in Ubon Ratchathani province, northeastern Thailand, where increasing number of malaria cases were reported recently. Methods: Mosquitoes were collected in 2013–2015 using human landing and cattle bait collections in six sites during both the rainy and dry seasons. Mosquitoes were frst morphologically identifed to species and their suscep- tibility status to deltamethrin (0.05%), permethrin (0.75%) and DDT (4%) investigated, according to WHO guidelines. Bioassays with the synergists PBO and DEF were carried out to address the role of detoxifying enzymes in insecticide resistance. DNA sequencing of a fragment of the voltage-gated sodium channel gene was carried out to detect knock-down resistance (kdr) substitutions at position 1014 in resistant species. Results: Due to low vector abundance, complete bioassays (n 100 mosquitoes) were only achieved for Anopheles hyrcanus s.l., which was resistant to all insecticides tested (mortality≥ ranged from 45 to 87%). Suspected resistance to DDT was found in Anopheles barbirostris s.l.
