The fires, which have consumed 8,652 acres of the national forest, some in Mendocino County, were started on June 20 by the same series of lightning strikes that caused the Mendocino Lightning Complex Fires that were declared con- tained earlier this month. The Southern California Interagency Incident Management team has been demobilized from the fire and control of the fire has been turned over to the Mendocino National Forest. In the coming weeks, firefighters will work to control the four large fires that make up the com- plex. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two real estate agents and a married couple who ran nursing homes are facing federal charges alleging the four defrauded several banks of $20 mil- lion dollars in a complicated mortgage scheme. The four face 126 counts of conspiracy, bank fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and other crimes. Nursing home owner Edith Nelson of Pleasant Hill and real estate agent Nelda Asuncion of Concord pleaded not guilty Friday in U.S. District Court in Oakland, according to court fil- ings. Nelson’s husband Ronald Nelson and real estate agent Christeta Lagarejos, both of Pleasant Hill, appeared in court on Friday but did not enter pleas. The alleged scheme ran between 2002 and 2007 and involved recruiting people to pose as buyers for almost 20 properties, many of them nursing homes in the suburbs east of San Francisco, according to the indictment. The real estate agents are accused of obtaining loans for the “straw buyers” using false income and employment informa- tion. Federal prosecutors allege the Nelsons recruited many of the buyers and funneled loan money into their own bank accounts. Along with fraud charges, the Nelsons are accused of income tax evasion and harboring illegal immigrants. They continued to run nursing homes despite losing their state license in 1998, according to the indictment. Attorneys for the four did not immediately return calls Monday. Doctor describes California bear victim’s injuries LOS ANGELES (AP) — Doctors have described the severe head injuries suffered by a woman who was attacked by a bear a week ago in the rural Piute area of Kern County. Dr. Kimberly Lee of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center told a press conference Monday that 56-year-old Allena Hansen’s forehead scalp was left hanging off to the side. There also was an indentation of bone where the bear’s claw tore through her face. California Department of Fish and Game spokesman Steve Martarano says DNA tests of saliva on the victim’s shirt have given a preliminary confirmation that the animal was a black bear. Fish and Game has called off the search for the bear. Kern County considers wind farm project BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — The Kern County Board of Supervisors is set to consider plans for a 5,800-acre wind farm designed to provide electricity to 90,000 homes. Officials with the PdV Wind Energy Project say that between 100 and 300 turbines would generate electricity to be supplied to Southern California Edison. Some property owners in the area say they are concerned about light pollution and the project’s possible effects on wildlife. The site is about 75 miles southeast of Bakersfield near the desert community of Rosamond. Company officials say they will shield aircraft warning lights atop the turbines and monitor bird and bat deaths at the site. Supervisors are scheduled to take up the plan at a meeting Tuesday. Group sues EPA to force insecticide ban SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An environmental group has sued to force the Environmental Protection Agency to ban an insecticide widely used on fruit and vegetable crops in the Central Valley. A spokesman for the nonprofit group Earthjustice says it filed suit Monday on behalf of farmworker organizations alleg- ing that the chemical diazinon poses health risks to field hands. The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco is one of a series the group has filed in an effort to force the EPA to remove what it considers “the worst poisons on the market.” In 1998 the EPA banned diazinon on golf courses because it is toxic to birds. Federal regulators also banned the use of diazi- non by homeowners in 2004. The chemical remains legal for agriculture. Labor leader urges members to help elect Obama SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The head of one of the nation’s largest unions is urging its 1.4 million members to work hard to elect Sen. Barack Obama to the White House. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees president Gerald McEntee told 6,000 attendees Monday at the union’s convention in San Francisco that Obama will fight for working people. McEntee also said he believed Obama would end the war in Iraq and find Osama Bin Laden. Obama is set to address the convention live via satellite on Thursday, the same day Sen. Hillary Clinton is scheduled to appear in person. 16 – TUESDAY, JULY 29, 2008 WEATHER THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL . 3-DAY FORECAST SUN AND MOON REGIONAL WEATHER CALIFORNIA CITIES Shown is today s weather.
