    A Geotrail in Richmond Park 1 Richmond Park Geotrail In an urban environment it is often difficult to ‘see’ the geology beneath our feet. This is also true within our open spaces. In Richmond Park there is not much in the way of actual rocks to be seen but it is an interesting area geologically as several different rock types occur there. It is for this reason that the southwest corner has been put forward as a Locally Important Geological Site. We will take clues from the landscape to see what lies beneath. Richmond Park affords fine views to both west and east which will throw a wider perspective on the geology of London. Richmond Park is underlain by London Clay, about 51 million years old. This includes the sandier layers at the top, known as the Claygate beds. The high ground near Kingston Gate includes the Claygate beds but faulting along a line linking Pen Ponds to Ham Gate has allowed erosion on the high ground around Pembroke Lodge. Both high points are capped by the much younger Black Park Gravel, which is only about 400,000 years old, the earliest of the Thames series of terraces formed after the great Anglian glaciation. Younger Thames terrace gravels are also to be found in Richmond Park. During the progress of the present work, it has been observed that the fame of the art, in common with that of letters and of arms, has been transferred from place to place; and that wherever it fixed its seat, its influence tended to the perfection of some branch of painting, which by preceding artists had been less studied, or less understood. Towards the close of the sixteenth century, indeed, there seemed not to be left in nature, any kind of beauty, in its outward forms or aspect, that had not been admired and represented by some great master; insomuch that the artist, however ambitious, was compelled, as an imitator of nature, to become, likewise, an imitator of the best masters; while the discovery of new styles depended upon a more or less skilful combination of the old. Thus the sole career that remained open for the display of human genius was that of imitation; as it appeared impossible to design figures more masterly than those of Bonarruoti or Da Vinci, to express them with more grace than Raffaello, with more animated colours than those of Titian, with more lively motions than those of Tintoretto, or to give them a richer drapery and ornaments than Paul Veronese; to present them to the eye at every degree of distance, and in perspective, with more art, more fulness, and more enchanting power than fell to the genius of Coreggio.     Let’s Make a Scene! The Holburne welcomes Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, who was born in Venice, the son of a theatrical scene painter. His father was Bernardo Canal, hence his son being know as Canaletto meaning “little Canal". During his life Bernardo Canal was best known as a painter of theatrical sets for works by composers Antonio Vivaldi, Fortunato Chelleri, Carlo Francesco Pollarolo and Giuseppe Maria Orlandini at two popular Venetian Theatres. Canaletto popularised veduta, which means a highly detailed, usually large-scale, painting of a cityscape or some other vista. You can see how these beautiful veduta, or city- scapes, easily inspire and translate into stage sets like this reconstruction of the Teatro San Cassiano in Venice, with each layer unfolding like a diorama. The Activity To make a 'Scene in a Tin', tub or box like a miniature stage set of a Venetian veduta. Take inspiration from the theatres and streets of Canaletto's Venice and layer your scene to create a 3D effect. Activity Sheet designed by Susie Walker What will you need? • A tub, tin or box to build your scene in. • Thin card and thick card (stiffer like packaging card) • Pencil and ruler • Scissors &/or craft knife • Glue • Colours for decorating paper • Black pen for outlining detail How to make your scene 1. Prepare your clean tub and decide what your scene will be - Venice; Bath; the sea; a fairy tale even. Collect some images to inspire you. 2. Paint some small pieces of thin card in the colours you would like to use for your scene.

    1 BIOGRAPHY OF SISMONDI HELMUT O. PAPPE I. Jean Charles Léonard Simonde was born on the 9th May 1773 into a Genevan family. In later life he changed his family to de Sismondi after an old Pisan aristocratic family from which he believed the Simondis to be descended. Charles’s parents were the pasteur Gèdèon François Simonde and his wife Henriette Ester Gabriele Girodz; a sister, Sara, called Serina by the family and her friends, saw the light of day two years later. The families of both parents were du haut the Simondes being on the borderline between nobility and upper bourgeoisie, the Girodz being members of the well-to-do upper bourgeoisie. Both the Simondes and the Girodz had come to Geneva as members of the second éimgration after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, that is, both families were Protestant fugitives from religious persecution in France. The Girodz had come to Geneva from Chàlons-sur-Saône in 1689. Henriette’s father, Pierre Girodz, became a successful and highly respected businessman engaged in various commercial enterprises connected with the watchmaking trade. He owned a substantial town house close to the cathedral in the Bourg-de-Four and an imposing country seat ‘Tourant’ at Chênes, both to be the residences of Sismondi after his return from exile in Italy. On the occasion of the marriage of his daughter on the 12th January 1770 Pierre Girodz was able to give her a dowry his town house worth 30,000 Livres as well as 10,000 Livres in cash and 2,000 Livres worth of jewellery.
