    African Drumming in Drum Circles By Robert J. Damm Although there is a clear distinction between African drum ensembles that learn a repertoire of traditional dance rhythms of West Africa and a drum circle that plays primarily freestyle, in-the-moment music, there are times when it might be valuable to share African drumming concepts in a drum circle. In his 2011 Percussive Notes article “Interactive Drumming: Using the power of rhythm to unite and inspire,” Kalani defined drum circles, drum ensembles, and drum classes. Drum circles are “improvisational experiences, aimed at having fun in an inclusive setting. They don’t require of the participants any specific musical knowledge or skills, and the music is co-created in the moment. The main idea is that anyone is free to join and express himself or herself in any way that positively contributes to the music.” By contrast, drum classes are “a means to learn musical skills. The goal is to develop one’s drumming skills in order to enhance one’s enjoyment and appreciation of music. Students often start with classes and then move on to join ensembles, thereby further developing their skills.” Drum ensembles are “often organized around specific musical genres, such as contemporary or folkloric music of a specific culture” (Kalani, p. 72). Robert Damm: It may be beneficial for a drum circle facilitator to introduce elements of African music for the sake of enhancing the musical skills, cultural knowledge, and social experience of the participants. Red refers to the spirit of sacrifice, gold represents the sun and also wealth, and green signifies the forests. Size and Population: Guinea has an area of 94,926 square miles, with a coastline of 198 miles. It is slightly smaller than Oregon. Its population is estimated at 9,246,462 as of July 2004. Geography and Climate: Guinea consists of four zones: the coastal plain, with the capital Conakry; the northwestern Fouta Djallon hill region; the northern dry lowlands; and the hilly, forested area of the southeast. The country is shaped like a boot standing on its toe, and Guinea’s shores are on the equatorial North Atlantic near the bottom of the bulge of West Africa. Its neighbors are Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Liberia, Mali, Côte d'Ivoire and Sierra Leone. The eastern part of the country is heavily forested, although it is far from virgin forest because of fires and farming. The improving road system is a help for travel, but not good for the forests since timber is now much more accessible for cutting. Forest elephants and other fauna are in decline because of poachers and loss of habitat through logging and the spread of farming. The climate is tropical and Guinea is one of the wettest countries in West Africa. Its rainy season is from May to October, cool weather falls between November and February, and from December to February the harmattan (har-mah-ton) winds blow in from the Sahara and the skies are grey with sand.

    Goblet drum 1 Goblet drum The goblet drum (also chalice drum, darbuka, doumbek, :ALA-LC / ﺩﺭﺑﻮﻛﺔ :Arabic ,ﺩﻣﺒﮏ :dumbec, or tablah, Persian darbūkah) is a hand drum with a goblet shape used mostly in the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe. Though it is not known exactly when these drums were first made, they are known to be of ancient origin. Some say they have been around for thousands of years, used in Mesopotamian and Ancient Egyptian cultures. There has also has been some debate that they actually originated in Europe and were brought to the Middle East by nomadic Celtic tribes. Its thin, responsive drumhead and resonance help it produce a distinctively crisp sound. Traditionally, goblet drums may be made of clay, metal, or wood. Modern goblet drums are also sometimes made of synthetic materials, including fiberglass. Modern metal drums are commonly made of aluminum (either cast, spun, or formed from a sheet) or copper. Some aluminum drums may have a mother-of-pearl inlay, which is purely decorative. Traditional Ornate goblet drum from Egypt drum heads were animal skin, commonly goat and also fish. Modern drums commonly use synthetic materials for drum heads, including mylar and fiberglass. Technique Goblet drums are played with a much lighter touch and quite different strokes (sometimes including rolls or quick rhythms articulated with the fingertips) than hand drums such as the djembe, found in Africa. There are two main types of goblet drums. The Egyptian style has rounded edges around the head, whereas the Turkish style exposes the edge of the head.

    West African Djembe drumming 'West Africa' is made up of many different countries including Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Guinea. There are hundreds of different African drums but the djembe is one of few that is played with both bare hands. Its huge popularity is down to the fact that it can create an unusually wide range of pitches, namely the bass (low), tone (medium) and slap (high). These sounds are created by striking different areas of the djembe skin with the hands. The basic techniques = Bass, tone and Slap Traditional djembe drumming Its Origins The djembe drum is said to have been invented in the 12th Century by the Mandinke tribe in what is now Mali, in West Africa. It has been played by West Africans for generations forming an integral part of ritualistic life in Mali, Guinea, Senegal and other neighbouring West African countries. Traditionally djembe rhythms and their matching dances would have been used for certain occasions, like celebrations. Mande people celebrate two major lifecycle events: birth ceremonies and marriages. Many tribal masks also have own dances and associated rhythms, such as Konden mask. Tuning In order to make a djembe sound good, the tuning of the skin needs to be fairly tight and, more importantly, even on all sides of the drum. If one side of the skin is tighter than another then there will be unwanted ringing sounds called ‘overtones’ and the djembe will not sound clear or crisp. Tuning – rope is horizontally interwoven between the vertical ropes to increase tension in the head The tuning of the drum is achieved by using a double-hoop system in which a lower hoop, lapped with the goat skin head, is pulled down over the rim of the drum by an upper hoop, which is interlocked via a long vertically-winding rope with a smaller hoop just below the bowl of the drum.

Its parameters can be modulated at audio rate while being played. The input to the model is an acoustic exci- tation signal which carries spectral information to color the output sound. This makes it suitable for acoustic interfaces – devices which provide excitation signal and control data simultaneously. The presented synthesis model builds up on work done by Miller Puckette[1] and processes audio input from a piezoelectric micro- phone into a nonlinear reverberator. This paper details a strikingly simple but novel approach on how to make use of the momentary DC offset generated by piezoelectric microphones when pressed to simulate the changes in drumhead tension. This technique is especially of interest for interfaces without pressure sensing ca- pabilities. In the design process we pursued an experimental ap- proach rather than a purely mathematical.
