The film endured a long and laborious gestation period under the threat of financial ruin. The project began as a sitcom pilot that McCarthy had initially penned for Fox Television. Fox passed, deeming the project “too edgy and too controversial for TV” “Can We Get a Cleanup On (qtd. in Kevin Aisle 2?”: Williamson). But McCarthy and her How Film Critics Mopped Up the production team could Transgressions of Jenny McCarthy’s not be dissuaded. They Dirty Love bought the rights back Sara Swain from Fox and McCarthy went to work transforming the script into a feature film (Kates). She insists that she never wanted to be a writer but because of the dearth of onscreen comedic roles for women, she was forced to take matters into her own hands (qtd. in Sobczynski). Dirty Love eventually debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in late January 2005, where it was warmly received. John Cooper, the Festival’s Programming Director, lauded the filmmakers in the program notes for so brazenly travelling “across a comic minefield where few dare to tread.” Soon after the film was picked up for distribution.

  • My Open Letter to Jenny Mccarthy Russ Davis
my open letter to jenny mCcarthy Russ davis From: Russ Davis, student/writer; Puyallup, Washington To: Jenny McCarthy, model/comedienne/actress/author/activist; Weehawken, New Jersey Subject: Why I Oppose You and Your Activism Dear Ms. McCarthy, Before all else, let me tell you exactly who I am. My name is Russ Davis, and I am an autistic. On the spectrum. Whatever you want to call it. In June 2000, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syn- drome; I’m now made to understand that’s not a thing anymore. No matter. I still tell people that I have Asperger’s, but my concern is not over what label my fellow autistics choose to use. My concern is that autistics keep in mind that we should not be enemies with each other–––we should be enemies with people who want to destroy who we are. Last night, I had the strangest dream. I dreamt that I final- ly had a chance to meet you in person and tell you everything I’ve always wanted to tell you. Because, for all the statements you’ve given on autism, I don’t think you’ve ever been willing to sit down with an actual autistic person to see how we really feel (except for your son, but the public doesn’t get to hear his side of the story). Well, last night, your dream self granted me that opportunity. Let me tell you right now what I told her last night. I am a human being with dreams. I want to be a published author.

  • Written Evidence Submitted by Netflix
Written evidence submitted by Netflix Submission to Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee inquiry The future of Public Service Broadcasting June 2020 Netflix in the UK 1. Netflix is a streaming subscription video on demand (SVoD) service that allows customers to watch a wide variety of TV shows, films, documentaries, and more over the internet and ad-free on any one of thousands of internet-connected devices at a time and place of their choice. We are a global service, offered in 190 countries with close to 180 million subscribers, of whom over 12 million are in the UK. 2. The UK is one of Netflix’s top three locations for production globally, along with the U.S. and Canada. In 2019 we invested over £400m1 here in local content, with over 50 different shows in production including co-productions with the public service broadcasters and in total over £500m in UK production - a third of all our production in Europe. We expect our investment here to continue growing; our long-term commitment to the UK creative community and our intention to increase our investment in production is also reflected in our announcement last year that we are creating a dedicated production hub in the UK, based at Shepperton Studios.2 3. Localised content is increasingly a priority for our business, both in the UK and around the world. Since 2019 we have appointed several UK-based commissioners overseeing scripted and unscripted content, including drama, comedy, factual, and kids and family - all of whom built their careers in the UK film and TV industry, including with the PSBs.

  • A Gay/Straight Comparison of Gay Voices
A GAY/STRAIGHT COMPARISON OF GAY VOICES A RESEARCH PAPER SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS BY SHANE LANNING DR. CAROLYN MACKAY - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2015 Lanning-1 Introduction: This study compares 4 gay male comedians and 4 straight male comedians’ performances of “gay speech”. The researcher observed comedians who were performing gay characters for the following three variables: the lisp ([s̪ ] instead of [s]), a raised pitch, and formal [–iŋ] vs. informal [–In] endings. It was hypothesized that both straight comedians and gay comedians would manipulate their [s] production to the dental [s̪ ] when performing a gay character; moreover, the comedians would also raise their pitch during their performance. The [–iŋ] vs. [–In] sounds, because their production below the level of consciousness, would not vary in the homosexual or heterosexual comedians. The purpose of this comparison was to determine how salient the features were in each group in order to identify stereotypical features associated with gay speech. In other words, if all of the comedians were using a particular feature, one could postulate that this feature has a stronger association with perceived gay speakers. Conversely, if the comedians were not using a particular feature, one could postulate that this feature has a weaker association or is not associated at all with perceived gay speakers. In recent studies, participants were asked to rate speakers on a scale of homosexual to heterosexual and a scale of feminine to masculine. In these studies, the data showed that features like the lisp ([s̪ ] instead of [s]), received higher gay ratings; participants rated speakers’ sexuality as gay more often when they exhibited this feature (Mack & Munson, 2012).
