This dissertation examines the experiences of campeños and campeñas, men and women who lived and worked in the banana fincas (plantations) of the Tela Railroad Company, a subsidiary of the United Fruit Company, and the Standard Fruit Company in the period leading up to the strike of 1954. It describes the lives, work, and relationships of agricultural workers in the North Coast during the period, traces the development of the labor movement, and explores the formation of a banana worker identity and culture that influenced labor and politics at the national level. This study focuses on the years 1944-1957, a period of political reform, growing dissent against the Tiburcio Carías Andino dictatorship, and worker agency and resistance against companies' control over workers and the North Coast banana regions dominated by U.S. companies. Actions and organizing among many unheralded banana finca workers consolidated the powerful general strike and brought about national outcomes in its aftermath, including the state's institution of the labor code and Ministry of Labor.

  • 1. Caracteristica Generales Del Municipio 1.1 Breve Reseña Historica Del Municipio

Testtttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt Country Office Annual Report 2019 Honduras Update on the context and situation of children The political polarisation that has been plaguing the country for years continued to be felt in 2019. Various sectors continue opposing the government, which complicates the ability to govern. This situation exacerbates the institutional fragility affecting the State of Honduras and its capacity to effectively implement development programmes to protect children’s rights. In the economic and social sphere, the recently published Social Panorama of Latin America[1] indicates that the worst incidence of poverty and extreme poverty as of 2018 were found in Mexico, Bolivia and Honduras.[2] This is a rather severe situation as there were no significant changes in poverty levels between 2002 and 2017. Furthermore, in countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua, more than 70% of the population is composed of households with per capita income less than 1.8 times the poverty line, which means they are at risk of falling into poverty in the face of external factors such as loss of employment[3]. In general, social programmes do not seem to favour conditions for improving the living conditions of Hondurans. For example, there is a decrease in income from non-contributory public transfers that are made by States to alleviate poverty and reduce vulnerability and that generally include conditional transfers[4]. In addition, Honduras is one of the countries in the region that most reduced the central government’s public social spending between 2016 and 2018 (10%)[5] and one of the countries with the lowest per capita resources allocated to financing social policies, with less than USD 230 compared to Chile and Uruguay, which allocated just over USD 2,500 or Costa Rica in the same sub region with 1,209 USD in recent years[6].

  • A Hepoht on Two Recent Collections of Butterflies from Honduras
1967 J ollrnal of the Lepidopterists' Society 18.5 A HEPOHT ON TWO RECENT COLLECTIONS OF BUTTERFLIES FROM HONDURAS ROSE SAWYER MONROE Dept. of Biology, University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky. CARY N. Ross AND ROGER N. WILLIAMS Dept. of Entomology, Louisiana State Univ., Baton Rouge, La. While employed with other endeavors in the Central American re public of Honduras, Monroe and Williams each made field collections of Rhopalocera. Williams was in Honduras as an employee of the United Fruit Company, and Monroe was there as an assistant to her husband, who was engaged in ornithological research. Literature pertaining to the Lepidoptera of Honduras is scarce. The only extensive collections known to us were made by C. M. Whitely and E. Wittkugel and recorded in Cadman and Salvin (1879-1901) or in Seitz (1923). Other than these two general works, records are limited to references in various reviews and revisions of groups of Lepidoptera. In the collections of Monroe and Williams are 205 species of hutter flies, including many previously unrecorded from the republic. Identi fications were made by Ross with the assistance of various specialists. Several specimens that remain unidentifiable for various reasons are omitted from this paper and may represent further additions to the known Lepidoptera of Honduras. COLLECTING SITES The specimens were taken primarily in the departments of Cortes and Athintida; a few others came from the departments of Yoro, Santa Barbara, Comayagua, and Choluteca, and the Dish'ito Central. The following localities may be found by referring to the map (Fig. 1); numbers in brackets following place names correspond to those in Fig.
