DOCUMENTS Journal of Occurrences at Nisqually House, 1833 INTRODUCTION F art Nisqually was the first permanent settlement of white men on Puget Sound. Fort Vancouver had been headquarters since 1825 and Fort Langley was founded near the mouth of the Fraser river in 1827. Fort N isqually was, therefore, a station which served to link these two together. While the primary object of the Hudson's Bay Company was to collect furs, nevertheless, the great needs of their own trappers, and the needs of Russian America (Alaska), and the Hawaiian Islands and other places for foodstuffs, caused that Company to seriously think of entering into an agricultural form of enterprise. But certain of the directors were not in favor of having the Company branch out into other lines, so a subsidiary company, the Puget Sound Agricultural Company, was formed in 1838 for the purpose of taking advantage of the agri cultural opportunities of the Pacific. This company was financed and officered by members of the Hudson's Bay Company. From that time Fort Nisqually became more an agricultural enterprise than a fur-trad ing post. The Treaty of 1846, by which the United States received the sovereignty of the country to the south of the forty-ninth parallel of north latitude, promised the Hudson's Bay Company and the Puget Sound Agricultural Company that their possessions in that section would be respected. The antagonism of incoming settlers who coveted the fine lands aggravated the situation. Dr. William Fraser T olmie, as Super intendent of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company, remained in charge until 1859, when he removed to Victoria, and Edward Huggins, a clerk, was left as custodian at Nisqually. -

(date and place not traced), associated with: Fort Vancouver general charges (l84l-42) blacksmith Fort Stikine (l842-43) blacksmith steamer Beaver (l843-44) blacksmith Fort Vancouver (l844-45) blacksmith Fort Vancouver Depot (l845-49) blacksmith Columbia (l849-50) Columbia (l850-52) freeman Twenty one year old Orcadian blacksmith, George Aiken, signed on with the Hudson's Bay Company February 27, l836 and sailed to York Factory where he spent outfits 1837-40; he then moved to and worked at Norway House in 1840-41 before being assigned to the Columbia District in 1841. Aiken worked quietly and competently in the Columbia district mainly at coastal forts and on the steamer Beaver as a blacksmith until March 1, 1849 at which point he went to California, most certainly to participate in the Gold Rush. He appears to have returned to settle in the Willamette Valley and had an association with the HBC until 1852. Aiken's family life or subsequent activities have not been traced. -

A MOUNT RAINIER CENTENNIAL In 1833, Dr. William Fraser Tolmie made a journey from Nisqually House to Mount Rainier. It was a notable undeltaking as the first near approach to the great peak. He kept a diary. Parts of that precious document have taken their places as prized publications among the works on the Pacific Northwest. An appro priate monument to the man and to his famous alpine excursion is found in Tolmie Peak in the northwestern comer of Rainier National Park. As the centennial of Doctor Tolmie's arrival in the Pacific Northwest approaches, many people are thinking of commemorat ing it. Two preliminary events are worth recording. Mr. C. B. Bagley furnishes the account of one of these, an informal celebra tion of the ninety-sixth anniversary of Doctor Tolmie's arrival in the Northwest. The other preliminary item is a letter proposing a centennial celebration in 1933. It was written to Mr. Horace M. Albright, Director of the National Park Service, Washington, D.C., by Asahel Curtis, of Seattle, chairman of the Rainier National Park Advisory Board. A copy of the letter was sent to The Mountaineers, Inc., and to certain northwestern newspapers. It will undoubtedly prove a sufficient impulse to produce the desired result. In that case, some picturesque chapters of local history will certainly be revived. To further the cause, the letter by Mr. Curtis is here published in full, following the account of the recent cele bration in Victoria.-EDIToR. Ninety-sixth Anniversary of Doctor Tolmie's Arrival On Saturday, May 4, 1929, at their residence in Victoria, the Misses Tolmie celebrated the 96th anniversary of their father's arrival at Fort Vancouver. -

The Mountaineer Climbing Code A climbing party of three is the minimum, unless adequate support is available who have knowledge that the climb is in progress. On crevassed glaciers, two rope teams are recommended. Carry at all times the clothing, food and equipment necessary. Rope up on all exposed places and for all glacier travel. Keep the party together, and obey the leader or majority rule. Never climb beyond your ability and knowledge. -

Intoduction to SNOW PASS - GMC 2003 Welcome to Snow Pass. This is the first GMC to be held at this location, and as far as we can ascertain, you are only the second group to have ever camped amongst this group of lakes. Many GMC’s are situated in valleys; however, this site is unusual as you are on the Continental Divide at an E-W “pass” between the Sullivan and Athabasca rivers, this is the arbitrary division between the Columbia Icefield to the south and the Chaba/Clemenceau Icefields to the north. But, you are also at a N-S pass between the Wales and “Watershed” glaciers, so you are at a “four way intersection” and from Base Camp you can access seven (7) different glacier systems. An intriguing local feature is the snout of the “Watershed” glacier, which actually divides so that it flows both west to join the Wales Glacier and thus drains to the Pacific and also turns east and feeds to the Arctic, which is why it is called the “Watershed” Glacier. In 2003, it may not be too obvious why in 1919 the Alberta/British Columbia Interprovincial Survey called this location “Snow Pass” but in the 1930’s (and even ? the early 1950’s) your Base Camp was still completely ice covered! There was permanent ice/snow from the “Aqueduct” to the “Watershed” to the “Toronto” Glaciers, an area of snow 5 km E-W and 10km N-S. Thus, in 1919, it really was a “snow pass”. THE INFLUENCE OF POLITICAL LEADERS ON THE PROVINCIAL PERFORMANCE OF THE LIBERAL PARTY IN BRITISH COLUMBIA By Henrik J. von Winthus ABSTRACT This thesis examines the development of Liberalism In British Columbia from the aspect of leader influence. It intends to verify the hypothesis that in the formative period of provincial politics in British Columbia (1871-1941) the average voter was more leader- oriented than party-oriented. The method of inquiry is predominantly historical. In chronological sequence the body of the thesis describes British Columbia's political history from 1871, when the province entered Canadian confederation, to the resignation of premier Thomas Dufferin Pattullo, in 1941. The incision was made at this point, because the following eleven year coalition period would not yield data relevant to the hypothesis. Implicitly, the performance of political leaders has also been evaluated in the light of Aristotelian expectations of the 'zoon politikon'.
