  • ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: WHEN APOLOGIES WORK
ABSTRACT Title of thesis: WHEN APOLOGIES WORK: THE BENEFITS OF MATCHING APOLOGY CONTENT TO VICTIMS AND CONTEXT Ryan Fehr, Master of Arts, 2007 Thesis Directed by: Dr. Michele Gelfand Department of Psychology Research shows that apologies are useful social tools. They help people to resolve conflict, reduce feelings of aggression, and foster forgiveness. Yet common sense tells us that all apologies are not created equal. From one to the next, they are likely to contain different verbal elements, to be offered to different people, and to be given under different circumstances. In each of these cases, an apology’s impact can be expected to change. To explore the boundaries of apology effectiveness, the current study asks four distinct questions. First, how effective are three different apology components (offers of compensation, expressions of concern, and acknowledgements of violated rules/norms) in eliciting forgiveness? Second, how does a victim’s self-construal (independent, relational, or collective) influence forgiveness of an offender? Third, does a victim’s self-construal moderate the effectiveness of different apology components? Finally, how does harm severity influence the effectiveness of long versus short apologies? To answer each of these questions, 171 undergraduate students participated in a policy capturing experiment. Regarding the role of apology components, all three components are found to positively affect forgiveness. Offers of compensation are shown to be the most effective, followed by expressions of concern and acknowledgments of violated rules/norms, respectively. Regarding the direct impact of the self, no significant effect was found. As for the moderating effect of the self on apology components, the independent self is found to strengthen the effectiveness of offers of compensation, the relational self is found to strengthen the effectiveness of both expressions of concern and acknowledgments of violated rules/norms, and the collective self is found to strengthen the effectiveness of acknowledgments of violated rules/norms.

  • Pre-Upfront Thoughts on Broadcast TV, Promotions, Nielsen, and AVOD by Steve Sternberg
April 2021 #105 ________________________________________________________________________________________ _______ Pre-Upfront Thoughts on Broadcast TV, Promotions, Nielsen, and AVOD By Steve Sternberg Last year’s upfront season was different from any I’ve been involved in during my 40 years in the business. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no live network presentations to the industry, and for the first time since I’ve been evaluating television programming, I did not watch any of the fall pilots before the shows aired. Many new and returning series experienced production delays, resulting in staggered premieres, shortened seasons, and unexpected cancellations. The big San Diego and New York comic-cons were canceled. There was virtually no pre-season buzz for new broadcast or cable series. Stuck at home with fewer new episodes of scripted series than ever to watch on ad-supported TV, people turned to streaming services in large numbers. Netflix, which had plenty of shows in the pipeline, surged in terms of both viewers and new subscribers. Disney+, boosted by season 2 of The Mandalorian and new Marvel series, WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, was able to experience tremendous growth. A Sternberg Report Sponsored Message The Sternberg Report ©2021 ________________________________________________________________________________________ _______ Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu also managed to substantially grow their subscriber bases. Warner Bros. announcing it would release all of its movies in 2021 simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max (led by Wonder Woman 1984 and Godzilla vs. Kong), helped add subscribers to that streaming platform as well – as did its successful original series, The Flight Attendant. CBS All Access, rebranded as Paramount+, also enjoyed growth.

  • Marketing Privacy: a Solution for the Blight of Telemarketing
Marketing Privacy Ian Ayrest Matthew Funktt Unsolicited solicitations in the form of telemarketing calls, email spam andjunk mail impose in aggregate a substantial negative externality on society. Telemarketers do not bear the full costs of their marketing because they do not compensate recipients for the hassle of, say, being interrupted during dinner. Current regulatory responses that give consumers the all-or-nothing option ofregistering on the Internet to block all unsolicited telemarketing calls are needlessly both over- and under inclusive. A better solution is to allow individual consumers to choose the price per minute they would like to receive as compensation for listening to telemarketing calls. Such a "name your own price" mechanism could be easily implemented technologically by crediting consumers' phone bills (a method analogous to the current debits to bills from 1-900 calls). Compensated calling is also easily implemented within current "don't call" statutes simply by giving "don't-call" households the option to authorize intermediaries to connect calls that meet their particular manner or compensation prerequisites. Under this rule, consumers are presumptively made better off by a regime that gives them greater freedom. Telemarketing firms facing higher costs of communication are likely to better screen potential contacts. Consumers having the option of choosing an intermediate price will receive fewer calls, which will be better tailored to their interests, and will be compensatedfor those calls they do receive. Giving consumers the right to be compensated may also benefit some telemarketers. Once consumers are voluntarily opting to receive telemarketing calls (in return for tailored compensation), it becomes possible to deregulate the telemarketers-lifting current restrictions on the time (no night time calls) and manner (no recorded calls).

Prudence Hutton: How Apology Can Promote Exemplary Practices for Reducing Special Education Disputes Breakout Session Transcript PRUDENCE HUTTON: Good afternoon. I’d like to welcome everyone to the last session of the day on apology. And I want to offer the first apology. I get the view of the river in the fall. You get me and the slides. The name of the program is How Apology Can Promote Exemplary Practices for Reducing Special Education Disputes. And the word can is a very operative verb there because the premise of my presentation today is it can, it should, but it doesn’t always. And there’s an opportunity for so, so, so much more in the CADRE community with across the board for using a lot, a lot more apologies. And this is for school districts and this is for parents and students alike. I come here today as part of a journey, and I want to share some of my story so there will be an understanding of why I am so interested and compelled and passionate about apologies. I am an attorney by training. Before law school, I had two very rewarding years working in a very prominent civil rights practice. After law school, I did labor negotiations, and there I was very, very committed to labor negotiations going away from strike for a strike meant failure. I then practiced in Las Vegas in a small practice where providing government services for the clients was extremely important, and the senior partner now is the majority speaker in the U.S.

  • An Introduction to BETRAYAL
An Introduction to BETRAYAL There are times in the life of any individual or organization when they are challenged by events entirely beyond their control. One such event happened in the life of our Goodwill that challenged us to our very core. That event was the fraud committed by Carol Braun. We take pride in our corporate values and our integrity. We were exposed and vulnerable. The real mark of an organization's strength is its capacity to weather the most difficult storms. I believe that "Betrayal" is a testament to the strength and integrity of our Goodwill. It is a living testament to our capacity to learn from our hardships and mistakes. The book has found its way to every corner of America and has served to comfort and inform others who have faced similar circumstances. This book is dedicated to the men and women of Goodwill, our "People". We are stronger, more resilient and more compassionate as a result of this experience. We hope that Betrayal will, in some small way, ease any personal or professional challenges the reader may face and we stand ready to help. • Wizardy Herbert and the Mobius Slipknot
Wizardy Herbert and the Mobius Slipknot The excitement in the air was so thick, you could spread it like custard on a crumpet. What a marvelous summer day it was to be a child, whisking through the knee-high rye, bounding over the hills with a smile challenging one’s face to contain it. What a marvelous day it was… for magic! Scampering youths contributed to a gulf of human confetti. It was a surge of robes and floppy hats, broomsticks, mops, even a few dustpans and soap buckets. Giddy young hands clutched wands, scepters, staves, rods, switches, swizzlesticks, batons, and even an uncooked strand of spaghetti here and there. A menagerie of prospective familiars squawked and murmured a generic din of animal noises. The creatures were in various states of being caged, restrained, tame, disease-free, alive, and the opposites of all those things, in many, many permutations. The children had propped up makeshift tables and set kettles to boil, as the lads and lasses were not ones for sparing afternoon tea. The shrill cacophony of whistling kettles and clinking sugar spoons barely overshadowed the racket produced by no less than four dozen impromptu cricket matches. Wicked googlies sliced through the air and laughter, much like, let’s say, an elusive winged golden projectile fluttering about, oh, a field in a fictional magical sport played on brooms. It doesn’t really matter what it’s called. Quid itching to flee pockets and purses was wagered generously on games of skill and chance. Dartboards awaited darts whizzing towards them on trajectories perpendicular to the googlies.
