Thirty-three Books (and One Book of Poetry) We Love Sandia Prep English Department Suggested Reading List for students entering 11th and 12th grades Animal Dreams, Barbara Kingsolver In this provocative look at a young woman returning home to face her past and her need for a renewed sense of purpose, Kingsolver weaves Native American legends with environmental issues and with a search for love and identity. Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy The novel’s opening line is justly famous: “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Here Tolstoy explores two characters’ very different ways of seeking meaning in their lives, one through a passionate love affair, the other through a commitment to family and to work. Arranged Marriage, Chitra Divakaruni In the collection of short stories, Divakaruni explores the lives and problems of several Indian women who struggle to adapt to new situations while maintaining their ties to traditional beliefs and habits. As I Lay Dying, William Faulkner Often called Faulkner’s most accessible novel, the work has a simple story line—that of a husband seeking to give his wife the burial she wished for—but it is told through the viewpoints of several characters. A fascinating and often comedic look at people’s hopes and delusions, their passions and compromises. The Blind Assassin, Margaret Atwood Here Canadian author Atwood examines a family over time, each member caught in a social tapestry of power and of current events and many searching to understand a tragic earlier event. Breakfast of Champions, Kurt Vonnegut Vonnegut, a great American man of letters, introduces us to a world of American values circa 1973.

Downloaded from http://hdl.handle.net/10072/48836 Griffith Research Online https://research-repository.griffith.edu.au Desiring Dexter: the pangs and pleasures of serial killer body technique Stephanie Green1 School of Humanities, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia Abstract The television series Dexter uses the figure of appealing monstrosity to unfold troubled relationships between corporeality, spectatorship and desire. Through a plastic-wrapped display of body horror, lightly veiled by suburban romance, Dexter turns its audience on to the consuming sensations of blood, death and dismemberment while simultaneously alluding to its own narrative and ethical contradictions. The excitations of Dexter are thus encapsulated within a tension between form and content as ambivalent and eroticised desire; both for heroic transgression and narrative resolution. Arguably, however, it is Dexter’s execution of a carefully developed serial killer body technique which makes this series so compelling. Through an examination of Dexter and his plotted body moves, this paper explores the representations of intimacy and murderous identity in this contemporary example of domestic screen horror entertainment. Keywords: Dexter, body-technique, desire, crime television, horror 1 [email protected] Launched in 2006, the television drama series Dexter has been a ratings record- breaker for its network producers (Showtime, CBS 2007-2011).

Grace: A Reflection on the Novels of Marilynne Robinson the simple joy of the words on the page. For this joy in words is what makes her writing so memo- rable: each sentence is delectable, meant to be read and then re-read, reveled in and embraced before the reader moves on to see what the next sentence might bring. Her novels call the reader to slow down, to notice the beauty of the ordinary, both in the beauty of her writing and the beauty of the lives she writes about. If one could take a common kitchen sponge, saturate the sponge with the words from her novels, and then wring out the sponge, what one would see drip out slowly would unmis- takably be grace.

  • Lives from Death Row: Common Sinners and Current Pasts
Moats, B 2019 Lives From Death Row: Common Sinners and Current Pasts. Anthurium, 15(2): 9, 1–9. DOI: https://doi.org/10.33596/anth.383 ARTICLE Lives From Death Row: Common Sinners and Current Pasts Ben Moats The University of Miami and Exchange for Change, US [email protected] This analysis interrogates Mumia Abu-Jamal’s Live From Death Row to argue that unlike traditional personal narratives or memoirs, the diverse series of vignettes in Abu-Jamal’s most famous publication provoke readers to grapple not solely with his lived experiences on death row or the lived experiences of his fellow inmates; they also call for readers to confront the damming moral, social, and economic impact of mass incarceration on society at large. His internal account of prison life, therefore, depicts the inmates of Pennsylvania’s Huntingdon County prison not as moral aliens but as human beings and what early New England execution sermons describe as “common sinners.” More specifically, Abu-Jamal’s arguments linking the “free” with the condemned work on two basic levels. First and foremost, they illuminate the ways we all share a common history of racism by implicitly revealing the connections between slavery, Dred Scott, Plessey v. Ferguson, Jim Crow, the civil rights movement, McCleskey v. Kemp, and the ideological prejudices that still permeate and influence our legal, political, and social systems today. Thus, given Abu-Jamal’s compassionate internal account of prison life; his analysis of the all-to-frequent harsh realities of our justice system; as well as his common-sense plea for reform, this analysis contends that Live From Death Row continues to speak with more contemporary works like Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow, Netflix’s 13th, Angela Y.
