I have in general consulted almost everything of consequence written on Premchand, including Shrimati Shivrani Devi's Premchand Ghar Men, the reminiscences of a large number of Premchand's friends and contemporaries as recorded in the Premchand memorial numbers ,of Hans and Zamana, and the writings of other littera­ teu~s published from time to time. The single source of greatest help, however, has been the rich material contained in the unpublished letters of Premchand, which I have collected at great expense in money and time from many places in India.

Dhanpat Rai Shrivastava (31st July 1880), better known by his pen name Munshi Premchand, was an Indian writer famous for his modern Hindustani literature. He is one of the most celebrated writers of the Indian subcontinent, and is regarded as one of the foremost Hindi writers of the early twentieth century. His novel include Godaan, Karmabhoomi, Gaban, Mansarovar, Idgah. Joanne Rowling was also born on this day. She grew up to be known by her pen name, J.K. Rowling, under which she wrote the “Harry Potter” books. Cumulatively selling 500 million copies to date, “Harry Potter” is the best-selling book series in history. Scholar, Department of English, Gauhati University, Assam Abstract Agriculture is at the core of India socio-economic and socio- cultural way of life. For more than 58% of Indian citizens agriculture is the primary source of livelihood. In recent times India has seen searing transformations in the agricultural sectors. The passing of agricultural reform bills in 2020 by the Indian parliament emulate the strategies of modernizing agricultural sectors by the government. However, such changes has also brought with a dissenting sections of the farmers who fear that these new laws would bind them to the profit making tendencies of large corporate houses. The farmer in India has never been free from exploitation by factions who have control over the agricultural sector. The Indian farmer is often overburdened by loans, with issues of destruction of his produce because of natural calamities like flood and droughts as well as the strong clasp of the middle man in the market. As such the figure of farmer as an marginalized individual becomes worthy of analysis. And literature as a representative space where the prosperity and angst of the society can be articulated becomes a pertinent sphere in analyzing the plight of the farmer. In this paper the plight of the Indian farmer is analysed through select short stories of eminent Indian writer Munshi Premchand. Premchand’s fiction is inextricably bound to the plight of the marginalized and dispossessed sections of the society.

[email protected] Abstract: History is of great deal to literature and many literary artists preoccupied themselves with historical materials. They show us both the environment and factors that affects people and values which dominate the very spirit of individual as well as contemporary social setup. Far from reflecting what happened to the society, these writings become the best emblem of historical realism. In Indian Context, the writings of Munshi Preamchand are of those kinds. Preamchand was considered to be the first Hindi author whose writings prominently featured realism.1 His both Urdu and Hindi works depict a rationalistic outlook which views religious values as something that allows the powerful hypocrites to exploit the weak.2 Many of his short stories and novels provide accurate and detailed knowledge of socio-economic life of poor and urban middle class people. They also present the picture of colonial exploitation, the social stratification, communal harmony and economic circumstances of a perfectly definite historical moment. He started with the writing of an article in 'Zamana' (a monthly magazine) in 1905, and expressed his anti-colonial attitude by supporting Nationalist-Extremist activism. Then, one by one, by the means of short stories (viz. Duniya Ka Sabse Anmol Ratan, Soz-e-Watan) he had shown his patriotic overtones and prop up the cause of Indian Independent Movement. On the other hand, his novels like Hamkhurma-o-Hamsavab, Nirmala, Pratigya raised the various women issues like child marriage, widowhood & widow remarriage, prostitution, dowry etc in a detailed manner than had been exhibited in any earlier Hindi writings.
