  • Nirodbaran Talks with Sri Aurobindo 01
Talks with Sri Aurobindo Volume 1 by Nirodbaran Sri Aurobindo Ashram Pondicherry NOTE These talks are from my notebooks. For several years I used to record most of the conversations which Sri Aurobindo had with us, his attendants, and a few others, after the accident to his right leg in November 1938. Besides myself, the regular participants were: Purani, Champaklal, Satyendra, Mulshankar and Dr. Becharlal. Occasional visitors were Dr. Manilal, Dr. Rao and Dr. Savoor. As these notes were not seen by Sri Aurobindo himself, the responsibil- ity for the Master's words rests entirely with me. I do not vouch for absolute accuracy, but I have tried my best to reproduce them faithfully. I have made the same attempt for the remarks of the others. NIRODBARAN i PREFACE The eve of the November Darshan, 1938. The Ashram humming with the ar- rival of visitors. On every face signs of joy, in every look calm expectation and happiness. Everybody has retired early, lights have gone out: great occa- sion demands greater silent preparation. The Ashram is bathed in an atmos- phere of serene repose. Only one light keeps on burning in the corner room like a midnight vigil. Sri Aurobindo at work as usual. A sudden noise! A rush and hurry of feet breaking the calm sleep. 2:00 a.m. Then an urgent call to Sri Aurobindo's room. There, lying on the floor with his right knee flexed, is he, clad in white dhoti, upper body bare, the Golden Purusha. The Mother, dressed in a sari, is sitting beside him.

  • Helena Roerich
HELENA ROERICH In the difficult days of world upheavals, of human disunity, of the neglecting of all the higher principles of Being, which are the only true givers of life and which lead to the evolu- tion of the world, there must be heard a voice calling for the resurrection of the spirit and for the bringing of the fire of achievement into all the actions of life. And, of course, this voice must be the voice of woman, who during mil- lenniums has drunk the chalice of suffering and humiliation and has forged her spirit in the greatest patience. Helena Roerich elena Roerich (1879–1955) was a prominent Russian thinker, enthusiast and writer whose H artistic heritage represents a very distinctive phenomenon in Russian and global scientific and philo- sophical thought. The principal work of her life – the books on the Living Ethics, dedicated to the issues of the cosmic evolution of the mankind, and her episto- lary work, closely related to her books, laid a firm foun- dation for many cultural and spiritual movements that were developing in the 20th century. Helena was born on the 12th of February 1879 in Saint Petersburg, in the family of Ivan Shaposhnikov, an architect who taught at the Institute of Civil Engineers, and his wife Yekaterina (née Golenischeva-Kutuzova), grand-niece of the great Russian field marshall Kutuzov. Since early childhood, Helena displayed remarkable abilities. By the age of six she could read and write in three languages. In adolescence she took serious in- terest in literature and philosophy. In 1895 she gradu- ated from the Mariinsky Gymnasium with honors and Nicholas Roerich.

  • New Age and Neopagan Religions in America
CHAPTER SEVEN The Age of Aquarius Although the idea of a New Age was popularized by Alice Bailey in the early twentieth century, the term had been around at least since the American Rev- olution before it was used self-consciously by Theosophists like her who be- lieved a “master” would come to enlighten humanity and usher us into a new age. The concept picked up relevance as the s counterculture looked to- ward the Age of Aquarius as a utopian future of peace and equality. Move- ments aimed at social and personal transformation that emerged or were given new meaning in the s continue to shape New Age and Neopagan religions. Ideas about the expected new era vary among Neopagans and New Agers, just as they ranged in the s from social revolution to com- munal escape from society. But most agree that it will include a changed dy- namic between men and women, healthy diet, holistic healing practices, and peacefulness. Along with and related to holistic healing and feminist restructuring, en- vironmentalist concerns are seen as key in bringing about the transformation of society. Many New Agers and Neopagans believe that an ecologically vi- able relationship to the natural world will characterize the future age, when humans will live more harmoniously on earth. Some also believe the earth it- self, a living being that has been ill used by humanity, will bring about cata- clysmic changes, while others expect a gradual dawning of enlightened con- sciousness among large numbers of people to usher in the New Age. Goddess religion will emerge from a “Great Purification,” claim some ob- servers, borrowing a phrase from Hopi prophecy: “Look at the freak weather phenomena all around us .

  • 1 Learning to See Reality As It Is
1 LEARNING TO SEE REALITY AS IT IS “To see is to be free” (Sri Bhagavan) INTRODUCTION The second seed group of the New Group of World Servers (NGWS) is that of the Trained Observers. They have been given the task of achieving freedom from the world illusion and glamour through “right observation” and “right direction” of the light of the soul. With this liberation of the illusion and glamour of the astral plane this group will inaugurate the era of light. This group has one of the most difficult tasks, which is seeing and teaching others to see reality as it is, and therefore seeing through the illusion of the all pervading glamour which seems very real for humanity in its current state of consciousness. For this the esoteric sense has to be developed, which means the possession of a constant inner contact with the soul. To cultivate this esoteric sense, and to achieve the needed detachment from form, regular meditation is needed, by which the intuition will be developed. Developing the intuition and bringing it into activity will eventually lead to solutions of many problems humanity is faced with today. In this paper I will go into the problem of humanity of being stuck in the material reality perceived by the lower personality. And I will elaborate on the contribution of the Trained Observers in solving this problem by learning humanity to see reality as it is by developing the esoteric sense and the intuition through meditation. THE GLAMOUR OF MATERIALITY In another paper ‘Dissipation of the Glamour of Materiality’ I wrote that one of the most pervading and enveloping glamours for humanity is the glamour of materiality.

  • The Divine Plan
Gordon Herbert, September 2015 The Divine Plan There is a divine plan for our planet and for the role of humanity on it. Its source is in the divine councils of the universe, and it is implemented by the highest three kingdoms of Life on our planet.1 We humans have a role to play in cooperating with this plan to help bring about the ascension of the whole. Divine Purpose The ultimate purpose for humanity is unknown, as we are simply conscious cells within larger cosmic wholes. We would need to know the divine purpose of these many integrated “gods”, and hence of God Itself. However, masters and seers have suggested that the immediate purpose of our Planetary Logos is to create a planetary synthesis of all seven kingdoms of Life, with fully integrated systems, in order to bring about a tremendous solar revelation.2 This is the planetary equivalent of the integrated personality uniting with soul, freed of material attachments, and then uniting further with divine Will. In both human and planet this level of attainment is the fourth initiation of crucifixion and resurrection, marking the ascension out of one kingdom into the next, higher kingdom of Life.3 Cosmic beings cooperating with the will of the Planetary Logos manifest this process. They set the parameters of the Earth system to guide all aspects of planetary life, including the growth of human free will. Our will develops within the limits of their parameters, guided by karma, reincarnation and grace. It eventually leads, as a result of this learning, to a personal decision to unite with the will and purpose of the Planetary Logos, the Father, to be as one.

THE WAY a review of Christian spirituality published by the British Jesuits July 2018 Volume 57, Number 3 TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES OF SPIRITUAL GROWTH this issue of The Way is dedicated to the memory of Paul L. Younger (1962–2018) Illustration from a manuscript of Liber divinorum operum by Hildegard of Bingen, early thirteenth century THE WAY July 2018 Foreword 5–6 Striving for Perfection or Growing into Fruitfulness? 7–17 Christopher Chapman Any understanding of spiritual growth will be influenced by the images chosen to illustrate it. Is this growth more like climbing a ladder to ever-higher states of perfection, or slowly unfolding as a developing organism does? Christopher Chapman explores this question in terms of four stages of organic growth. The Light of Consciousness and the Light of Christ 19–30 Meredith Secomb Meredith Secomb is a clinical psychologist who has reflected deeply on the challenge of human suffering. In supporting her clients as they deal with difficult experiences, she has found that by sitting with these experiences in silence they find a luminous core within themselves, and that this in turn leads them to God. Here she describes this process, and considers its meaning. St Teresa of Jesus, Mental Prayer and the Humanity of Jesus 31–39 Joanna Farrugia St Teresa of Ávila advocated mental prayer for her Carmelite sisters at a time when this laid women open to suspicion from the Church authorities. Joanna Farrugia explains why this was important to Teresa, and how it was inextricably linked for her to a life dedicated to loving service of others.

  • Mary in Esoteric Teachings
Chapter 7. Mary in Esoteric Writings Chapter 7 Mary in Esoteric Teachings hapter 7 explores how Mary is portrayed in modern esoteric teachings. The primary mission of Mary’s Palestinian incarnation was to give birth to Jesus, but she went on to attain C adeptship in the same lifetime. After her passing Mary made the rare transition from the human to the angelic kingdom, literally to reign as Queen of the Angels. She now serves as Mother of the World, with special concern for women and children. Mother of the World, by Russian artist, ex- plorer and peacemaker Nicholas Roerich (1924). Esoteric teachings on the World Mother build upon the rich religious traditions of South Asia and ancient Egypt. Contrasting views have emerged, which ultimately may be absorbed into a larger synthesis. One view is that the Mother is a being or entity, possibly a divine manifestation, and the historical Mary was one of several avataras sent to Earth on specific missions. The other is that the World Mother is a position or office in the Planetary Hierarchy, and Mary is the latest of a series of individualities to hold that office. Esoteric Teachings What is Esotericism? Esotericism, in its most general sense, is simply the study of the inner, less obvious aspects of reality—contrasting with the literal, tangible, outer appearances of things. The Nicene Creed af- firms belief in God, creator “of all that is, seen and unseen”; esotericism focuses on the unseen. Aside from church buildings, pews, hymnals, and organizational structures, much of Christianity is esoteric. The Eucharist is the supreme example of an esoteric reality.
