Those Australians constituted five in every thousand of their people, or three in every two hundred of their male workers. In South Africa they made up just one in every twenty-five soldiers in a British army of almost half a million.2 As these bald figures immediately suggest, Australia's contribution to the war was too small to be decisive, and its experience of the war involved too few of its people to make a powerful impact on its society, let alone wrench its history onto some different course. Still, that contribution and that experience were unprecedented for a people who had never before gone to war as a people, and deserve more attention - and more balanced, dispassionate, critical attention - than they've yet received from historians of the war, of Australia, and of the British empire.3 In this lecture I'll strive for such balance by outlining why and how Australians went to war in South Africa, what their soldiers did there, and the war's legacy for their country and their descendants today. Interest in the Soldatensprache or ‘trench slang’ was evident before the end of the Great War. In Britain, ‘trench slang’ quickly moved from the front to the newspapers in 1914, and later featured in compilations and early dictionaries from 1916 concurrent with the growth of the citizen armies, who adoPted a mix of slang derived from India and the colonies, mixed with the new slang of the trenches. In Germany, there is evidence to suggest that soldier slang derived from the mass Professional armies of the 19th century – but without the colonial flavour of the British. Interest in German slang at home was less Pervasive in PoPular circles, though much studied by Philologists. This paper compares British and German trench slang as a first steP in a deePer study of the topic, and focuses on concepts of friends and enemies, of Heimat and ‘Blighty’, and of the nature of the artillery war on the Western Front. The war between ‘Fritz’ and ‘Tommy’ – resPectively German and British soldiers1 commenced once the British ExPeditionary Force, landing in France in early August, took up its pre-determined Position in the line in suPPort of the French. Socially, however, attitudes to the rank-and-file were defined by a pragmatic realism purged of such sentiments, the likes of which would characterise the British public’s relationship with their army for over thirty years. Scholars of both imperial culture and the Victorian military have identified this dual persona of Tommy Atkins, however, a dedicated study into the true nature of the soldier’s position has yet to be undertaken. It explores the new realities that the war created in the form of mass conscription, a state-controlled economy, government requisitioning of grain and possessions, widespread shortages, forcible deportations and voluntary displacements, death, and grief. Using archival and non-archival sources, it also focuses on how Ottomans wrestled with these wartime realities. World War I required the most comprehensive mobilization of men and resources in the history of the Ottoman Empire. In order to wage a war of unprecedented scope effectively, the Ottoman government assumed new powers, undertook new responsibilities, and expanded its authority in many areas. Civilian and military authorities constantly experimented with new policies in order to meet the endless needs of the war and extended the state’s capacity to intervene in the distant corners of the empire to extract people and resources to a degree not seen before. Victory in the war became increasingly dependent on the successful integration of the armies in the field and the home-front population, a process that inescapably led to the erosion of the distinction between the military and civilian realms.

Bannerman, 2005 To Jim, who inspired me to study history iii ABSTRACT This thesis uses the Victorian ideology of chivalric manliness to explain the class-oriented army hierarchy developed by volunteer soldiers from northern England during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. Newspaper reports, advertising, and popular fiction reveal a public mythology of imperial manliness and neo-chivalric ideals that was transferred onto civilian volunteers, creating an ideal warrior that satisfied a thirst for honour. This mythology created a world view in which northern communities, once supporters of the burgeoning peace movement, became committed supporters of parochial units of volunteer soldiers that fought in the newly expanded army. Soldiers' letters and diaries reveal that ingrained ideals of manliness and chivalry led to class-differentiated hierarchies within the army that mirrored those in civilian life.
