 Pete Dunn, former head baseball coach at , was cited by Chipper Jones during his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 29. “I wasn’t just raised by my parents,” Jones said in his speech, which was printed in full on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution online and numerous other media outlets. “I was raised by the Hagstroms, the Abbotts, the other Joneses in Pierson, and my godfather, Pete Dunn, who was the head baseball coach at Stetson University for nearly 40 years. You all taught me discipline, respect and the value of hard work. Without even knowing it, you taught me to believe that a kid from Pierson, , could make it. I wouldn’t be here without you.”  Jason Evans, Ph.D., assistant professor of Environmental Studies and Sciences, was quoted and pictured in the article, “A hellish July validates climate change forecasts” on tcpalm.com. “I worry about water quality, about flooding. I think about pretty much any community along the coast. I think about climate change a lot, of course that’s what I work on,” Evans said. “I look at the most dire scenarios, and we don’t know that those are the ones that are going to come to pass, but when we think about them they are quite dire.”  Clay Henderson, executive director of Stetson’s Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience, was quoted in the article, “Groups protest new Florida springs action plans,” on The Daytona Beach News-Journal and The Gainesville Sun online. The article noted “a sweeping effort to adopt action plans to improve water quality in 13 springs systems across the state is on hold” after critics voiced concerns over alleged inaccuracies and flaws in the plans. Henderson said he hopes the additional time will give the interested parties “more opportunities to try to tweak things a little bit. We’ve recommended a number of things” to make the plans better.  Alumnus Ted Cassidy, ’55, the actor who portrayed Lurch on “,” was commemorated on his July 31 birthday with profiles on waldina.com, the Scott Rollins Film and TV Trivia Blog, and the blog Travalanche. The July 31 Rollins post, titled “Towering Ted Cassidy: Lurch, Bigfoot, Harvey Logan, Frankenstein Jr. & More,” features numerous photos of Cassidy as Lurch and in roles on such TV shows as “” and “The Six Million Dollar Man,” and in such films as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” The post notes Cassidy “attended Stetson University in Florida, where he was active with the student government and was a star on their basketball team, the Hatters. Cassidy averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds.”   Chris Ferguson, Ph.D., professor of Psychology, wrote an article “Why are some of us afraid to be feminists?” on houstonchronicle.com.  College Consensus ranked Stetson University No. 6 in its list of Best Colleges in Florida for 2018. According to the website, the list “averaged the latest results from the most respected college ranking systems with thousands of real student review scores from around the web to produce a unique College Consensus rating for each school.”

 Law Professor Peter Lake is quoted in the July 30 Washington Post and AP News, “On eve of departure, Sullivan reflects on her tenure at the University of Virginia.”  Alumnus Bill Russell related his experiences as an Army combat correspondent during the Korean War in the article “Veterans mark 65th anniversary of Korean War armistice” in The Orlando Sentinel on July 26. “I rarely carried a weapon,” said Russell, a Stetson journalism grad. “A carbine was not an asset to me because I had troops around me. … I didn’t worry about it.” After the war, Russell worked as a public affairs officer for the U.S. Department of Labor.  Alumna Sister Joan Grace, a nun, chaplain and educator, is profiled on spacecoastdaily.com as she prepares to celebrate 60 years in her religious vocation with a mass on Aug. 12 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Viera. “God’s plan for me was bigger than the plans I had for myself,” she said.  Law Professor Ciara Torres-Spelliscy is quoted in the July 27 Washington Examiner article, “No smoking gun of campaign finance violations by Trump in Michael Cohen tape, experts say.” Professor Torres-Spelliscy is quoted in the July 27 Colorado Independent, “Campaign Finance primer: What do soft, hard, and dark money actually mean?” The July 31 Election Law Blog reports that ProfessorTorres-Spelliscy was promoted to Professor of Law at Stetson University College of Law.  Law Professor Rebecca C. Schropp, who earned his undergraduate degree from Stetson, is the chair of the Land Use & Environmental Law Department for the Fort Myers firm Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt, P.A.  Alumnus James Golden is running for the District 5 school board seat in Manatee County and is featured in a Q&A at heraldtribune.com, and in an article in The Bradenton Times.  The June 24 News Chief and July 26 Lakeland Ledger report that law alumnus Frank Rouse died at 78.  The July 28 PR.com reports that law alumnus Dale E. Workman’s law office was named one of the top 20 criminal defense law firms in Jacksonville, Florida.  The July 30 Athens CEO reports that Governor Deal appointed law alumna Rachel H. Davidson to serve as Division of Family and Children Services interim director.  The July 30 reports that longtime Pasco attorney and Stetson Law alumnus Harvey Delzer and his son Edward Delzer were victims in a fatal crash in Seminole.  Law alumnus and Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri is quoted in the July 30 Reason, “Legislatures Say Sheriff Who Declined to Arrest Michael Drejka for Killing Markeis McGlockton is Misrepresenting Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law.”  The Aug. 1 citybizlist reports law alumnus Kevin J. Justyna Mueller has been promoted to senior manager in the Daytona Beach office, where she will plan, execute, direct and complete tax projects in a variety of industries. Ian (Matt) Thompson has been promoted to associate accountant in the Daytona Beach office, where he will assist with research and preparation of individual and corporate tax returns.  Alumnus Aaron “Mac” Buckle has joined James Moore & Company, P.L., as a staff accountant in the firm’s Daytona Beach office, according to the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce.  Alumnus Stacey Morris, Director of Energy Research at Alerian, had his article “Bye, Bye, Bye (MLPs) Part 2: Who Could Be Saying Bye?” published at seekingalpha.com.  Alumnus Pete Longo has been hired as VP, AxiomGO Product Manager at Axiom Bank in Orlando, according to reports on benzinga.com and other media outlets.  Alumnus John R.  Terence Farrell, Ph.D., professor of Biology, was featured in National Geographic on July 25 in Animals, Wild Encounters: “Watch What Happens When a Rattlesnake Meets a Giant Centipede.” Farrell said, “Snakes are often thought of as incredibly stupid eating machines. But it turns out that the more you look at snakes, the more sophisticated their behavior becomes.” Farrell recently started a YouTube channelwith his videos of Pygmy rattlesnake predatory behavior, which National Geo picked up and used with the article.  Stetson University was included in an article, “College Consensus Releases Ranking of Best Colleges in Florida 2018,” on WBBH- TV Online, the Arizona Republic Online, Telemundo Amarillo, the Mammoth Times Online in and numerous other media outlets. College Consensus is a new college ranking website and included Stetson in its ranking of the Best Colleges in Florida 2018.  Stetson Trustees Hyatt and Cici Brown were mentioned in Florida Trend online on July 25 in Business Briefs. Hyatt Brown, the Daytona Beach insurance executive and former House Speaker, and his wife will donate $18 million to Stetson University to build a science building and expand science programs, the magazine reported. It is the largest gift in the university’s history.  Stetson student Emily Rosenfeld and her Chihuahua, Archie, were included in the article, Colleges and Universities Say Yes to Pets, on July 25 in Voice of America and other media outlets, including NewDelhiNews.net and BritainNews.net.  Stetson University was featured as “A Beacon of Innovation” on July 17 in E-Learn Magazine, which included quotes and video clips with Stetson faculty, students and administrators discussing improvements in the digital learning environment for faculty and students since Stetson selected Blackboard Software as a Service. The video clips and photos with quotes also were shown during the Blackboard World 2018international conference on July 16-19 in Orlando.  Law Professor Ciara Torres-Spelliscy wrote the July 24 article, “What You Need to Know About Florida’s Voting Rights,” for Shondaland. Professor Torres-Spelliscy is quoted in the July 25 Vox article, “Did Trump violate campaign finance law? I asked 11 legal experts.” She is quoted in the July 26 Bustle magazine article, “The Trump & Michael Cohen Tape Raises Some Burning Questions – Here’s What Legal Experts Say.”  K.C. Ma, Ph.D., CFA, director of Roland George Investments Program, was quoted in U.S. News and World Report on July 26 in an article, “Elon Musk Makes Tesla Stock a Volatile Bet.” Tesla stock fell by 4.5 percent in May after CEO Elon Musk’s angry outburst, wiping out $2 billion in market cap that day, the article said. Ma said, “Musk has the relentless, almost obsessive drive to always be the best at whatever he does. He is self-centered, egotistic and borderline narcissistic.”  Stetson University was mentioned in the story, “For Chipper Jones, the Perfect Upbringing,” on July 24 in the Napa Valley Register, the St. Louis Post Dispatch and numerous other media outlets. The story notes Jones’ father, Larry, played shortstop and later became a coach at Stetson under former head baseball coach Pete Dunn. Dunn is Chipper Jones’ godfather and coached him as a boy during summer baseball camps at Stetson, according to the article. The former Atlanta Braves player is being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Jacksonville Jaguars player Donald Payne was mentioned in the Gainesville Sun’s Top Cats column, the Florida Times-Union online and other media outlets. One of the columnists wrote, “I’m convinced Donald Payne is a special player – just needs the opportunity to show it. He’s the only player in the NFL from Stetson, which doesn’t offer football scholarships.”  Christopher Ferguson, Ph.D., professor of psychology, was interviewed in an article, “‘Head cases: Internet gaming disorder’ really just a human failing?” in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune on July 24.  Law Adjunct Professor Arturo Rios is quoted in the July 21 WRAL article, “Immigration a top issue for Republican governor candidates … but what can they actually do about it?”  Stetson alumna Kim Barclay was the subject of an article, “Who is Zach Johnson’s wife Kim Barclay, how many children does golfer have, and what is his net worth?” in The World News in the United Kingdom on June 22 and other media outlets. The article says Barclay graduated from Stetson with a degree in sociology.

The article noted Ronald Fulmore II is a Stetson business school graduate and former Stetson Hatters Soccer Team MVP.  The July 20 Space Coast Daily announced that law alumnus Bryan Lober has been endorsed by Jim Glover for Brevard County Commission District 2.  The July 23 Carlton Fields announced that law alumnus J. Ryan Yant has joined the firm as an associate in its Tampa office.  According to the July 25 Chron and MySanAntonio, law alumnus Ian Larson has been promoted to vice president & associate general counsel of AssuredPartners, Inc.  Law alumnus and Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri is quoted in the July 25 Daily Beast.  According to the July 26 Gulfshore Business, Law alumnus Will W. Sunter has been selected for the 2018-19 class of the Florida Fellows Institute by the Florida Fellows of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC).  The July 26 recommends law alumnus Dave Ellis for Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Court Judge.  According to News4Jax, law alumnus John Upchurch is running as a democrat in the 6th Congressional District election.  Alumnus Jared Lanza has been elected to Geico assistant vice president of the Competitive Advantage Leadership Group by the Geico Board of Directors, according to the Business Wire.  Alumna and Cantor Riselle Bain is mentioned in a review by Talkin’ Broadway of a play that she wrote while a student at Stetson, called “Tops from Flops.” Bain also performed in the play by The Players Centre for the Performing Arts in Sarasota.  Alumna and Maine resident Alison McKellar will talk there Aug. 15 about her work as volunteer and chair of the Board of Directors of the nonprofit NuDay Syria, which collects supplies for Syrian refugees fleeing from violence in their country, according to an article in the Penobscot Bay Pilot.  Alumnus Henry Brown, CEO of family-owned Miller Electric Company, was featured in a story in the Jacksonville Daily Record, “You Should Know … Henry Brown,” on July 19. Brown received a Master’s degree in Accountancy from Stetson University.  Alumnus Jonathan Martin has been appointed to the Florida Southwestern State College District Board of Trustee, according to Capital Soup. Professor Morgan wrote the July 11 Elder Law Prof Blog, "How Liveable is Your Community?"  The July 6 Town-Crier reports on Stetson Law student Taylor Tyson, who has been crowned Miss Florida 2018. News of Tyson being named Miss Florida ran in multiple regional media outlets throughout Florida.  Stetson University alumna, Katherine C. Russo, co-wrote a July 9 article entitled, "How law enforcement is using genealogy testing services to solve cold cases." According to the article, "DTC genealogy testing services have been accessible for the last 10 years and now include dozens of independent labs such as AncestryDNA, 23andMe and Pathway Genomics. … the DTC genealogy testing technique opens the door to potentially solving many cold cases, but law enforcement must be sure they remain in legal boundaries."  Florida Business Daily on July 10 recognized graduates from Stetson University. According to the article, "about 26.5 percent of the 1,166 degrees and certificates handed out by Stetson University in 2016-17 were to students on Legal and Professions and Studies programs, making them the most popular programs that year."

Alumni News:  The July 11 White House announced that Stetson Law alumnus Donald L. Palmer will serve as a member of the Election Assistance Commission for a remainder of a four-year term expiring December 12, 2021.  Stetson University alumnus Stephen Lanier passed away on July 5, according to the Rome News-Tribune. Lanier received a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Stetson University in 1971.  Stetson University alumna Rachel A. Ramsay-Lowe was mentioned in The Network Journal. According to the article, Rachel A. Ramsay-Lowe "fell in love with musical theater as a little girl and majored in the field at Stetson University." She is currently working as an associate attorney at Marshall, Dennehey, Warner, Coleman and Goggin P.C.  The July 7 Sanford Herald ran a story about local authors, Carey E. Ferrell and Elizabeth H. Ferrell, authors of the book, "Sanford: Life in the Celery City." The Ferrells wrote this book that contains "270 photographs and intriguing details about people, places and events.” The couple “met at as students at Stetson University … and after graduation the couple married,” according to the article.  The July 5 SLK Law reports on Stetson Law alumna Jennifer Wilson.  The July 6 citybizlist reports that law alumnus and Haliczer, Pettis & Schwamm co-Founder Jim Haliczser was appointed co- chairperson of the Trial Lawyers Section of the Broward County Bar Association.  The July 5 Florida Politics, "Ashley Moody says technology may change fight on crime," interviews Stetson Law alumna Ashley Moody.  The July 6 News Herald and The American Lawyer reports on alumna Ashley Moody, candidate for attorney general, who earned an LL.M. from Stetson University College of Law.  The July 9 Sarasota Magazine reports that Law alumna Alyssa Acquaviva was recently hired by the law firm Williams Parker Harrison Dietz & Getzen in its trusts and estates department.  The July 11 Space Coast Daily reports that Stetson Law alumnus Bryan Lober is running as a Republican for the District 2 Brevard County commission seat.

 Christopher Ferguson, Ph.D., professor of Psychology, was mentioned in four articles this week regarding gaming addiction, including The New York Times, entitled, "Endless Gaming May Be a Bad Habit. That Doesn’t Make It a Mental Illness;" The Washington Post, titled, "World Health Organization says video game addiction is a disease. Why American psychiatrists don’t;" Nerds On Call, titled, "Do Video Games Encourage Violence?" and Spiked, titled, "There is no such thing as ‘gaming disorder’."  Christopher Ferguson, Ph.D.,was mentioned in an article in The Atlantic, titled, "Why Is There a ‘Gaming Disorder’ But No "'Smartphone Disorder?'" Ferguson worried "unhealthy gaming is merely a symptom of more serious underlying conditions, like depression, anxiety, or autism- spectrum disorder."  Stetson University President Wendy B. Libby, Ph.D., was mentioned in The Daytona Beach News-Journal in an article entitled, "Stetson prison education program receives grant to grow." Stetson received a $210,000 grant that will allow "more men incarcerated at Tomoka Correctional Institution to take college courses starting this fall," according to the article.  The July 2 Orlando Sentinel ran the news that Law alumnus Wilfred "Wil" Florin has been elected to the Stetson University Board of Trustees. Florin is founder of Florin|Roebig Trial Attorneys.  News of Stetson Law student Taylor Tyson being crowned Miss Florida has run in Good Day Orlando, the Daytona Beach News- Journal and other media outlets including NBC, FOX, WFLA AM, Fox 29 Morning News, and the Ledger.  Pamela Cappas-Toro, Ph.D., assistant professor of World Languages and Cultures (Spanish) and co-director of the Community Education Project, was interviewed on WMFE 90.7-FM in a segment, titled, "Intersection: Incarceration Doesn’t Mean An End To Education, How Stetson University Is Reaching Inmates." She stated, "I remember the first meeting that we had with the students that were interested. … There was a lot of excitement. There was a lot of students because there was no educational program before this."  K.C. Ma, Ph.D., CFA, director of the Roland George Investments Program in Stetson’s School of Business Administration, was quoted June 26 in U.S. News and World Report in a story, titled, "Battling Big Players Not New for Walmart." Ma said, "One key strategy Walmart uses to compete with Amazon is through the 'omnichannel' retail strategy, which requires the perfect coordination of Walmart’s technology, infrastructure and physical real estate." Ma also wrote two articles for Seeking Alpha entitled, "Buy U.S. Stocks For The 4th Of July" and "Trade War And Semi Stocks."  Christopher Ferguson, Ph.D., was mentioned in The Lowdown, A blog by Jonathan Low regarding Ferguson’s article "Why Is There Gaming Disorder But Not Smartphone Disorder?"  Christopher Ferguson, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, wrote an article on July 1 for the Good Men Project, titled, "School Safety Commission Should Not Worry About Violence in Entertainment Media – The Good Men Project." Last month, Ferguson testified before U.S. Education Secretary Betsy Devos’s school safety commission on the impact that violence in entertainment media has on violence in society.  Christopher Ferguson, Ph.D., was mentioned in an article from Smart Parenting, titled, "Is Spanking an Effective Discipline Method? Pediatricians Say No." Ferguson states he doesn’t "believe facts are clear about whether mild spanking is harmful for children in the long run."

 The July 2 4 Traders ran the news that law alumnus Richard Nummi is now director and chairman of the executive compensation committee of INTREORG SYSTEMS Inc.  Stetson Law alumnus Eric Koenig is new shareholder at Trenam Law, according to the firm’s website.  Stetson Law alumni Calvin Brown and Joe Collins Jr. are featured in the July 2 TCPalm.  The June 29 BizWire Express ran the news of Law alumni Suzanne Boy, Traci McKee, John Miller, Shannon Puopolo, Kayla Richmond and G. Donald Thomson being named Florida Super Lawyers.  Law alumnus David P. Carter had a letter to the editor published in the July 2 Wall Street Journal.  Law LL.M. alumna Rishma Eckert was invited to speak at Capitol Hill by the Institute of Caribbean Studies in June 2018 as part of Caribbean Legislative Week on the topic of de-risking and the loss of corresponding banking relationships between U.S. and Caribbean banks.
