H.R.H. Princess Valaya Alongkorn was greatly concerned with the education of young Thai women. Therefore, on June 4, 2475 B.E. (1932 C.E.), she donated four rai (.64 hectare) of land to the Ministry of Education to establish Petchburiwittayalongkorn Teacher Training School. The current address of this original donation is Number 153, Petchburi Road, Thung Phayathai Subdistrict, Rajathevi District, Bangkok. This building and land had previously belonged to Phraya Phactpongsawisutthathibordi (Sun Sundravej). The first group of students was teacher-training students, other post-secondary students, and secondary school students (Matthayom 7 and8) who were transferred from Benjamorajalai School. The first head master was Ajarn Nilrat Bansitvorasan. The school had the letter “P” as an emblem. The color green was chosen as the school color because green is the color associated with Wednesday, which is the day of the week on which H.R.H Princess Valaya Alongkorn was born. Since that time, the institute established by Her Royal Highness has performed the duties of both post-secondary education, specializing in training students to become teachers, and of secondary school education. The evolution of the school’s status and title over the years is described in the following account. 1 October 2513 B.E. (1970 C.E.): The school was named Petchburiwittayalongkorn Teacher College. 2515 B.E (1972 C.E.): The college expanded to its present location at Number 1, Moo 20, Phaholyothin Road, Klong Neung Subdistrict, Klong Luang District, in Pathumthani Province. It covers an area of 294 rai, 3 ngan, and 72 square wa (over 3 | P a g e 47 hectare). At that time Ajarn Uayporn Plengwanich, the administrator of the college, had contacted the governor of Pathumthani Province, Mr. Prait Vrairat. Consequently, this plot of land belonging to His Majesty the King was donated as a site for the new college campus. 14 November 2517B.E. (1974 C.E.): His Majesty the King granted the royal patronage to Petchburiwittayalongkorn Teacher College and its alumni. 9 November 2518 B.E (1975 C.E.): Their Majesties the King and Queen, along with the two princesses, made a royal visit to dedicate the statue of H.R.H Princess Somdetch Phra Raja Pituchha Chao Fa Valaya Alongkorn, Krom Luang, Princess of Petchaburi. On that occasion the King donated 100,000 baht from his personal funds to establish the Somdetch Phra Raja Pituchha Chao Fa Valaya Alongkorn Foundation. 2520 B.E (1977 C.E.): Approval was granted to offer the Bachelor Degree in Education. 2528 B.E (1985 C.E.): Approval was granted to offer the Bachelor Degree in Education, the Bachelor Degree in Liberal Art, and the Bachelor Degree in Science. 14 February 2535 B.E (1992 C.E.): His Majesty the King granted the name “Rajabhat Institute” to all Teachers’ Colleges. The word “rajabhat” means “civil servant.” 24 January 2538 B.E (1995 C.E.): The Rajabhat Institute Act, 1995, was issued in the royal gazette, decreeing that the country’s Rajabhat Institutes serve as higher education institutes to facilitate authentic local development. 6 March 2538 B.E (1995 C.E.): His Majesty the King granted all Rajabhat Institutes the right to use his royal seal as the emblem of the institute. 15 February 2542 B.E (1999 C.E.): Her Royal Highness Princess Mahachakri Sirinthorn laid a wreath at the statue of H.R.H Princess Somdatch Phra Raja Pituchha Chao Fa Valaya Alongkorn, Krom Luang, Princess of Petchaburi, and presided over the opening ceremony dedicating the Student Professional Experience Building (Arkarn Somdetch Chao Fa Valaya Alongkorn). 2542 B.E. (1999 C.E.): The Bachelor Degree in Business Administration (two-year program) was offered. 2543 B.E. (2000 C.E.): The Bachelor Degree in Business Administration (four-year program) was offered. 4 | P a g e 14 February 2544 B.E (2001 C.E.): Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Narathivas Rajanakarin laid a wreath at the statue of H.R.H Princess Somdetch Phra Raja Pituchha Chao Fa Valaya Alongkorn, Krom Luang, Princess of Phetchaburi, and presided over the opening ceremony of the 100th Anniversary Building and the Rajanakkarin Assembly Hall of the 100th Anniversary Building. 21 August 2545 B.E (2002 C.E.): His Majesty the King granted royal permission for the college to be titled as “Rajabhat Institute Valaya Alongkorn under the Royal Patronage”. 10 June 2547 B.E. (2004 C.E.): His Majesty the King signed the royal act “Rajabhat University Act 2547 B.E.”, which was announced in the Royal Gazette on 14 June 2547 B.E. This royal act upgraded the status of Rajabhat Institute Valaya Alongkorn to university level. Since 15 June 2547 B.E the institution has been known by its current title, Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University under the Royal Patronage. Philosophy Focusing on distinguished academic with moral leading local development and advanced technology. Vision The university produce teacher is archetype for human development potential based on the philosophy of sufficiency economy and create innovation, to stable wealth and local development. Mission Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University under the Royal Patronage has the following missions under the Rajabhat University Act 2547 B.E, Articles 7 and 8: Article 7: The Rajabhat University will serve as a higher education institute focusing on local development in order to promote national knowledge, to restore the nation’s wealth of knowledge, to preserve local wisdom and to create new knowledge for the benefit, security and prosperity of the Thai people. The Rajabhat University will engage in equitable and sustainable management, conservation and use of natural resources and the environment. The objectives of the Rajabhat University are to educate; promote academic and higher professional knowledge; teach; conduct research; provide academic services to Thai society; improve, distribute and develop technology; conserve art and culture; educate students for the teaching profession; and develop and upgrade the skills of teachers. 5 | P a g e Article 5: In order to achieve Article 5, the Rajabhat University has the following duties: • To raise the level of teacher productivity and staff development through productive learning. To establish a network of cooperation in line with national development policy and in accordance with the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy. • To research and develop responses to local problems. To develop a variety of systems that can be used to improve the quality of life and strengthen the local community. • To develop collaborations between the university and the participants that fulfill its mission to disseminate information that promote the interests of the local community. • To encourage and cultivate cultural awareness and learning. Princess [Somdetch Phra Raja Pitucha Chao Fa] Valaya Alongkorn, Princess [Krom Luang]of Bejraburi Raja Siridhorn was the 43 rd daughter of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and Her Majesty Queen [Somdetch Phra (Sri Savarindra) Baromma Raja Devi Phra Phan Vassa Ayika Chao] Sri Savarindra the Queen Grandmother. She was born on Wednesday April 16, 2427 B.E. which is equivalent to the fifth month of the sixth waning moon of the year of Monkey in the lunar calendar at the palace of Her Majesty Queen [Somdetch Phra Nang Chao (Sawang Vadhana) Phra Baromma Raja Devi] Savang Vadhana within the grand palace. She had the following siblings as follows: • Prince and Royal Highness [Somdetch Phra Chao Lukya Ther Chao Fa] Maha Vajirunhis , and later created H.R.H.
