  • Appointment of Clergy Office Holders a Guide To
Appointment of clergy office holders A guide to good practice Produced in support of the Ecclesiastical Offices (Terms of Service) Measure 2009 Prepared by TSIP in 2013 for final approval by the Standing Committee of the House of Bishops and updated by RACSC in February 2015 Foreword 1. The process by which people are chosen for particular roles is one of the most important and sensitive in all institutions. The Church of England has, for many years, invested significantly in well resourced and nationally agreed arrangements for discerning the vocation of those called to ordained ministry. But, for a variety of reasons the Church of England has traditionally found it much more difficult to reflect nationally on the processes which come later, once someone is due to be considered for a parochial clergy appointment. 2. There have been a number of reasons for this reticence. The most obvious is the sheer fragmentation of responsibility for making appointments in a church with some 13,000 parishes. The Church of England is not a legal entity and is made up of many different bodies; in many ways it has more the qualities of an organism than an organization. 3. In addition, the patronage system, though much reformed over the years, has continued to make the practical operation of parochial appointments within the Church of England more complex than in many other institutions. In the appointment of incumbents, it remains the patron who has the right of initiative, though an appointment cannot proceed without the consent both of the bishop and of the two parochial representatives.

  • Calendar of Intercessions Michaelmas – Advent 2017
Calendar of Intercessions Michaelmas – Advent 2017 to this edition of the prayer diary, following the Feast St Michael and All Angels until the first Sunday of Advent. There are now two Rochester cycles of prayer – ‘parishes’ and ‘extra- Welcome parochial’. This is an attempt to be a little more even handed with the additional groups who are prayed for as the year turns, and to include our church schools in our prayers. As usual, it’s a sizable document but designed to be quick and clear to read, and also to leave space for your own notes. Of course, you do not have to print it all out at once, and you’re welcome to reformat it, if you wish (a Word version is available from my blog, see website below). Sunday entries are designed to look at some of the bigger pictures in our Diocese – sometimes geographical (deaneries, archdeaconries, link dioceses) sometimes issues or activities (Vocations Sunday). If there is an aspect of diocesan life that you’d like included on a Sunday, do let me know. These are followed through the week by daily prayers from all over the diocese, and across the Anglican Communion, including the calendar of saints and other worthy people. Finally, there is space in the daily entries for you to note any prayer requests that have been made to you or your parish, or any special interests you want to remember in your prayers. Please contact me with any comments or suggestions – [email protected] or 01634 814439. I will also be pleased to provide large print copies to any who would find that helpful.

  • Women Readers of Middle Temple Celebrating 100 Years of Women at Middle Temple the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales
The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple Middle Society Honourable the The of 2019 Issue 59 Michaelmas 2019 Issue 59 Women Readers of Middle Temple Celebrating 100 Years of Women at Middle Temple The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales Practice Note (Relevance of Law Reporting) [2019] ICLR 1 Catchwords — Indexing of case law — Structured taxonomy of subject matter — Identification of legal issues raised in particular cases — Legal and factual context — “Words and phrases” con- strued — Relevant legislation — European and International instruments The common law, whose origins were said to date from the reign of King Henry II, was based on the notion of a single set of laws consistently applied across the whole of England and Wales. A key element in its consistency was the principle of stare decisis, according to which decisions of the senior courts created binding precedents to be followed by courts of equal or lower status in later cases. In order to follow a precedent, the courts first needed to be aware of its existence, which in turn meant that it had to be recorded and published in some way. Reporting of cases began in the form of the Year Books, which in the 16th century gave way to the publication of cases by individual reporters, known collectively as the Nominate Reports. However, by the middle of the 19th century, the variety of reports and the variability of their quality were such as to provoke increasing criticism from senior practitioners and the judiciary. The solution proposed was the establishment of a body, backed by the Inns of Court and the Law Society, which would be responsible for the publication of accurate coverage of the decisions of senior courts in England and Wales.

  • Praying Together Partners
Partners Praying Together ECAUSE OF THE RAPID CHANGES brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic across the globe much of ABM’s normal project work has been disrupted. Because of that, we have B asked our Overseas Partners to supply us with prayer points that reflect the situation in their country. Included in this edition of Partners Praying Together are the prayer points that we have received. We have included these so that you can show prayerful concern for them as they, who like us are ‘wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world’ (as the prayer from Compline puts it), adjust to living in a time of global pandemic. You’ll also find the usual things we would normally have: the feasts and commemorations from the lectionary, the Australian Cycle of Prayer, and commemorations from the United Nations calendar. All the material is designed to inform your prayers for our Overseas Partners, the bishops and dioceses of our Church and for wider global concerns. With the Psalmist let us pray, ‘Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, Lord, and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice’ (141.2). 1. Who are ABM’s Overseas Partners? 2. • What Happens When the Vicar Leaves • Managing the Vacancy
What Happens when the Vicar leaves Managing the vacancy Appointing a new priest. A Guide for Churchwardens and PCC members 1 Introduction You will be reading this most likely because your Vicar (or Rector or Priest in Charge) has either just left or has announced his or her intention to leave. This can be a daunting time for a church but it is also an opportunity: An opportunity to celebrate the strengths of the ministry of your church on which you will want to build on for the future. An opportunity to recognise where you are ready as a church to change and grow. It can therefore be also exciting as you look to future and to the new things God is going to do in you and in your church as you welcome a new Vicar to work in partnership with you in the ministry and mission of the parish. This is a time when you will be well supported by your Bishops, your Archdeacon and your Area Dean. Each have different roles to play but each will want you to know that they are there to work with you so that the vacancy is a positive experience and that together we make a really good appointment for your next parish priest. This leaflet sets out all you should need to know about the managing the vacancy and the appointment process but there are bound to be times when you will have other questions to raise. • Porvoo Prayer Diary 2021
PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year.
