IGLTA_2018_Conv_Ad03.indd 1 4/4/18 10:40 AM togetherTOGETHER weWE goGO

In 1984, it was radical thinking to prioritize LGBTQ travel as a key market. That made IGLTA’s first convention, which was held in San Francisco, stand out. Our groundbreaking mission to expand LGBTQ tourism globally made us a resource for queer travelers—and the agents, tour operators, airlines, hotels, cruise lines and tourism bureaus eager to attract them.

Today our mission continues, and the IGLTA Annual Global Convention is more important than ever. Our organization brings to our convention host city the year’s best new ideas, resources and services that help strengthen the LGBTQ tourism community at home and abroad. More than anything, however, the convention links like-minded professionals who are truly the innovators of our industry. We are so pleased to welcome you to Toronto for a magical time “Together”—the theme of this year’s 35th anniversary gathering. Together we are stronger, and the connections we form through face-to-face quality time remain the most effective way to evolve as a tourism community, and as a powerful market.

This year’s convention builds on our previous successes with new panel discussions, education sessions, networking events and other opportunities to travel, learn and connect. Thought leaders like Albert Herrera of Virtuoso and Maria Cuba of Airbnb Experiences will speak LGBTQ travel and tourism trends. Fabrice Houdart, Human Rights Officer, Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, will moderate a talk on “The Intersection of Human Rights and Tourism.” Rika Jean-Francois of ITB will discuss sustainability in tourism with Randy Durban, CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. These are just a few of the incredible presentations on this year’s agenda.

It’s not all strictly business, though. Join us for networking events day and night, including our Voyage fundraising dinner to benefit the IGLTA Foundation, the ever-popular Media Networking Event and sociable outings in beautiful, LGBTQ-welcoming Toronto. On that note, we’re especially proud to gather in Canada—a country that’s doing things right, and we’re thrilled to share the love.

Here’s to a productive, thought provoking and inspiring time Together!

John Tanzella - President & CEO

iglta.org 12 This year’s IGLTA Honors are presented with support from Visit Philadelphia®

Get your history straight and your nightlife gay: visitphilly.com/lgbt

IGLTA Honors are chosen by the association’s board of directors and presented during each year’s Annual Global Convention to individuals, businesses or organizations that have improved the global landscape for LGBTQ travelers.

Pinnacle Award - The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada The Pinnacle Award, IGLTA’s highest honor, is selected by the Chair of the IGLTA board of directors and given to an individual, business, or organization that has truly made a heroic journey in advancing LGBTQ travel worldwide.

As Prime Minister of Canada, The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau’s time in office has carried consistent messages of support for the LGBTQ community. In November 2017, he led the Canadian government in issuing a formal apology for a program of discrimination against LGBTQ Canadians (1962-1996) that was accompanied by US$85 million in reparations; this emotional address to Parliament elevated the global conversation on human rights. Trudeau also was the first Canadian Prime Minister to march in a Pride Parade (Toronto, 2016.) In an interview with UK’s Attitude magazine, Trudeau said, “The LGBT+ community has become emblematic of the fight for human rights. The fact that so many people have gone for so long feeling that they had to be ashamed or hide about their core identity to fit into society is a lesson for everyone to push against.”

Hanns Ebensten Hall Of Fame Award, TANYA CHURCHMUCH This Honor, bestowed to a longtime IGLTA member, takes its name from the man widely considered the father of gay travel.

With more than 20 years of media relations, communications, travel writing and on-air television journalism experience, Tanya Churchmuch is the founder of MuchPR, a New York-based PR agency focusing on travel, hospitality and LGBTQ markets. Tanya launched the company in 2015 after working in-house for Tourisme in Canada for several years, overseeing their International Media Relations and Travel Trade team. Tanya has long been a passionate advocate of LGBTQ travel: as publisher of a lesbian travel website, Girlports; by overseeing all of Tourisme Montreal’s LGBTQ outreach during her time with the organization; through promotion of LGBTQ-owned travel businesses and through her involvement with IGLTA. For seven years Tanya was a member of the IGLTA Board of Directors (including three years as Board Chair) and currently sits on the IGLTA Foundation Board of Directors as Secretary. A recognized expert in the industry, Tanya has spoken at many travel conferences, including TBEX, the Women in Travel Summit, FITUR, GNetworks 360 Buenos Aires, and several IGLTA Annual Global Conventions. 13 iglta.org Pathfinder Award, This Honor is given to an individual, business or organization that has made significant positive impact on their destination, demonstrating the highest standard of warmth and hospitality to the LGBTQ community.

Rainbow Railroad is a largely volunteer-based charitable organization that assists LGBTQ people seeking safe haven from state-enabled violence, persecution and the threat of death where homosexuality is criminalized. Since it was founded in 2006, Rainbow Railroad has enabled nearly 500 LGBTQ people to reach safe destinations. Most recently, 57 LGBTQ individuals living in Chechnya, 31 of whom have now arrived in Canada. Website: rainbowrailroad.ca

Pioneer Award, DEAN NELSON, Founder Of Pride House This Honor is given to an individual, business or organization whose innovative spirit and actions have led the way in moving LGBTQ travel forward.

Dean Nelson has always been active in his community. In 2006, he was part of the team that saved Whistler’s Gay Ski Week and in 2008 he became the CEO/Executive Producer of the annual event now known as Whistler Pride & Ski Festival. In 2009, Dean co-founded the Mr. Gay World organization, which incorporates sports, culture and human rights into public performances in an effort to raise awareness of homophobia. A year later, he founded the first Pride House, a pavilion that would celebrate diversity in sport and raise awareness of homophobia within sports at the Vancouver/Whistler 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Dean continues to sit on the Pride House Advisory Group, which has mentored 2012 Summer Olympic Games, Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games and many more. Website: pridehouseinternational.org

Storyteller Award, DIRK BAUMGARTL This Honor is given to an individual, business or organization that has captured the imagination and interests of LGBTQ travelers through impactful reporting and storytelling.

Travel journalist, editor and author Dirk Baumgartl has been an advocate for LGBTQ travel for the German-speaking community in , Austria and Switzerland for almost 15 years. His travels have taken him through nearly 70 countries, helping to establish a reliable network within the international LGBTQ travel industry. After studying German literature, communication science and journalism in Bamberg and Amsterdam, Dirk began his career at Berlin-based Bruno Gmünder Verlag, publisher of IGLTA’s 2010 Hanns Ebensten Hall of Fame Award-winner, the Spartacus International Gay Guide. He was longtime editor-in-chief of the German LGBTQ travel magazine Spartacus Traveler and is author of the book Gay Hot Spots: Spartacus Best Places, In 2016 he became Head of Travel Content & Strategy for Germany’s largest LGBTQ media network blu, overseeing travel-related content for LGBTQ city magazines in Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne, the website blu.fm and Mate magazine as well as for Spartacus International Gay Guide and Spartacus Traveler, part of the blu media network since 2017. The IGLTA Honors will be presented at Voyage: The IGLTAF Benefit, on Friday, 11 May 2018 at the Fairmont Royal York. Special Guests: Cast members from the American-Canadian production of Queer as Folk and LGBTQ+ and ally Team Canada athletes and Olympians. Presented by: Disney Destinations.

In 25 years, and with no funding, Not Just Tourists has delivered over 10,000 suitcases to 82 countries around the world. They receive donations from Canada’s hospitals, clinics and medical suppliers, and volunteers have weekly “packing parties.” Travelers sign up and are given the suitcases to deliver to remote clinics where they are needed. Here is your opportunity to participate in an “IGLTA Foundation Packing Party!”
