Canella wanted to do something more related to cutting edge technology in relation to web development and applied to several jobs throughout the country. One of the places that he applied to was ebay in Portland, OR for a similar position to the one he accepted. They called him up. Canella was stunned because he thought it was a “long shot.” Even though the position was in San Jose and not Portland, he was ecstatic. The interview process began. He talked on the phone with the hiring manager, who asked him tons of questions about new emerging technologies. Following that interview, ebay called him to do two Skype interviews with their engineers. He accepted, and he had two hour-long interviews with each engineer. After those two interviews, Canella heard back fairly quickly, and before accepting the job they offered, he requested to meet the team and go to the ebay campus in Campbell, CA. They obliged, and he had a great time there. After a few days, he made his decision to accept the job. Jim Canella ‘77 and his son, Patrick ’07 Canella looks forward to his new adventure. FALL 2013 The Magazine of Cathedral Preparatory School 9 Old Friends Reminisce at Reunion Weekend 2013

Approximately 300 guests gathered at the Cathedral Prep Events Center on Friday, July 26, 2013 to kick off Reunion Weekend 2013. As guests crossed the Cherry Street bridge, they were greeted with a bird’s eye view of the Events Center football field and track. Registration was inside the Events Center main building, giving alums and their guests an opportunity to tour the inside of the facility. A picnic was provided by the CPEC catering crew, and classmates gathered on the CPEC lawn in areas designated for their graduating class. Guests ranged from 1948 alumni to more recent five-year graduates from the Class of 2008. Regardless of age, lots of reminiscing was done about the good ol’ days at Prep! Classes held their individual activities on Saturday. Golf outings, picnics and dinners were held to celebrate with just classmates. Whether hitting the links, meeting for a picnic, or reminiscing over a drink in downtown Erie, it was a great day to catch up and reconnect with old friends. As Cathedral Prep is built on the tradition of the Catholic faith, Reunion Weekend 2013 appropriately wrapped up with a Mass. Attendees and their families assembled at Prep on Sunday at 10 a.m. in the H. David Bowes Auditorium. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Scott Jabo, President, and concelebrated by Fr. Jason Feigh, incoming Campus Minister at Prep, and Msgr. Thomas McSweeney of the Class of 1963. After Mass, alums and their families travelled down to the cafeteria for breakfast. Following the meal, the school was open for informal tours. While roaming the halls, many had the chance to shop in the Rambler Retail school store to check out the latest Cathedral Prep fashions and other spirit items. Although the building has undergone significant upgrades and renovations during the past few years, many observed that the integrity and character of the school remained intact.

18 FALL 2013 The Magazine of Cathedral Preparatory School Energy Abounds in In the Heights What do you get when you choose a contemporary musical, 50 dedicated students, and a stage director, choreographer, music director and conductor with lots of passion for live theatre? You get In the Heights, the explosive Prep-Villa musical that filled the Prep stage in May 2013. In the Heights was an award-winning Broadway hit (2008-2011). The Prep and Villa Theatre Program was not only the first to produce this musical in Erie, but in the entire region. An energetic, nonstop musical, In the Heights tells of a neighborhood in New York City who celebrate home, family and finding where you belong. Under the direction of Fr. Mike DeMartinis, the fast-stepping Latin choreography of Carolyn McIntyre, the vocal direction of Andrew Alesso, and the conductor’s baton of Jake Malec, 50 talented students acted, sang, and danced their way through one of their very favorite shows. “The cast really bonded during rehearsals and grew even closer during the performances,” says Seamus Clerkin ’16. Kate Cooney ’13 (VMA) agrees; “The theater program is like a family, so doing a show about relationships brought us even closer together.” Fr. Mike was thrilled with the response to In the Heights. He told his cast that when the reviews were in, they were totally positive. Some audience members came back a second time. That’s great praise for any theatre, but even more so for a high school program where theatre is performed for fun; the high level of talent at Prep and Villa is a bonus!

This is an extremely high honor and is a perfect example of our living mission of Cathedral Prep. The white bucket drive was held over a three-week period. Buckets were distributed to every classroom and office. Everyone was encouraged to drop any extra change that they may have in to the buckets. FALL 2013 The Magazine of Cathedral Preparatory School 35 In Case You Were Wondering…

The letter below was reprinted on Aug. 2, 2013 in the Blessed Sacrament Church Newsletter. Monsignor John Hagerty wrote this letter on May 25, 1947 to the Rector of St. Mark’s Seminary after reading the announcement in The Lake Shore Visitor concerning applications to Saint Mark’s Seminary.

Dear Father: I should like to apply for admission to the seminary beginning September, 1947. I will be graduating from Cathedral Preparatory School on this June 19th. I have attended “Prep” for four years, after completing an eight-year primary education at St. Peter’s Cathedral grade school, Erie, My marks on the whole have averaged approximately 92%, my best subject being English, and hardest, Latin. The desire for a vocation to the Priesthood had always, I believe been with me—as far back as I can recall. While in the eighth grade, however, I had a sudden urge to be a brother—a teaching brother in particular. I had correspondence for two months with a Brother Cyprian of the Franciscan Brothers, Brooklyn, New York. If my father had not died, I might have entered the novitiate then. But I’m glad I didn’t. For through my four years at Prep, I believe God has called me to something higher—His Sacred Priesthood. Through no influence at all, I believe a vocation is with me. I want to be a priest, not because the Roman collar and black suit look nice, nor because of the respect which people have for priests. Rather I want to become a priest for two reasons: To help others in their battle for eternity To know God better, and save my soul I only hope that God does not recall His vocation from me, for then I should have nothing to live for. If references and recommendations are necessary, I will be glad to obtain them for you. I would be honored to have an interview with you at your convenience. I may be contacted at the aforementioned address. Respectfully John B. Hagerty In Loving Memory...1/1/30 - 4/6/13
