In that year, Dr Pam Groenewald was asked to use all the available information from the Information Management Department of the Boland/Overberg office, compile it in an easily readable report, and provide a deeper analysis with recommendations. We were fortunate to get Dr René English involved when Dr Groenewald was no longer available after 6 years. This report targets grassroots health workers, middle management and interested community members. I hope that you, as the reader, will understand the health issues much better and that it will inspire you to do what you can to make things better for the community out there. I want to use the opportunity to thank Dr René English, the final author, Mrs Wilna Van Der Merwe and her Information Management team, the Health Programme staff of the Worcester office, and those in the services who have to collect and manage the data on a daily basis. OPENING REMARKS Provide any opening remarks that may assist in the review of this report. This project has taken the Coordinated Avifaunal Roadcounts (CAR) project a significant step forward. Through the CAR results and consultation with landowners, conservationists, Cape Nature, South African National Institute of Biodiversity, the Department of Agriculture and others within the agricultural sector recommendations have been developed regarding conservation and management of biodiversity. Partnerships with other organizations have been strengthened and beneficial to the project. The initial area of focus for the Big Birds on Farms (BBOF) project was the whole Cape Floristic Region (CFR). Although the bird monitoring, that involves participants from the wider CFR region, took place in much of this region, it proved too wide an area in which to give presentations/workshops. So the main area in which these presentations occurred was the Overberg region, with one in the Swartland and one in the Little Karoo regions. III. NARRATIVE QUESTIONS 1. What was the initial objective of this project? BBOF aimed to promote private sector and community involvement in conservation in agricultural landscapes within and surrounding the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) biodiversity corridors. This will have significant social, political and economic consequences. Awareness of climate change over the past decade has focused broad attention on water as a key resource under threat. This increasing water scarcity will have effects on agriculture, energy, trade, the environment, national sovereignty and international relations as nations who are water scarce continue to deplete their resources while looking to water rich areas to ensure their long term growth and sustainability. In South Africa, these factors increase the challenge of managing South Africa’s limited water resources to achieve economic and social justice imperatives. Historically, water planning has focused on water resources infrastructure development and operation, supported by demand management initiatives to reconcile water requirements and availability. However, as water resources are increasingly developed and utilised, catchment quantity and quality stress tend to increase.
