Welcome to the autumn issue of &London. Following a glorious summer of sunshine and sporting triumphs, the feelgood factor is riding high. Steady signs of economic recovery have added to the positive mood – our bars, restaurants and shops are full as locals and visitors enjoy the city’s endless delights. The property market is equally vibrant and the usual burst of autumn activity seems particularly fast-paced this year, succeeding one of our busiest summers on record.

y nine o’clock on Saturday morning, Bute Street is bustling with shoppers. There’s a queue forming at Christchurch B Fish for live lobsters and Friday’s day-boat catch from Dorset; sausages are sizzling on the pan at The Parson’s Nose; and cakes and pastries are piled up and ready to go at Artisan Foods. South Kensington, with its immaculate stucco-fronted houses and garden squares, had a wealth of upmarket bars and restaurants long before the great British food revival. Now, its farmers’ market, which started just five years ago, brings the British countryside right into the heart of London. Bute Street has become the perfect Saturday morning hangout for any city-dweller craving a taste of the countryside. With a relaxed family atmosphere (the street is pedestrianised during market hours), it is intimate yet perfectly balanced with 15 to 20 stalls, selling everything from handmade meals to organic, biodynamic fruit and vegetables. Locals sample the cheeses, find out more about the origin of meats and learn what makes a particular type of tomato taste so good before they buy. Stalls complement, rather than compete with, local stores. Visitors still pop into Oddono’s for gelato or Raison d’Etre to sit and enjoy coffee and a pastry once they’ve bought eggs, cheese, fresh organic vegetables and meat direct from the farm. Parents arrive with children and locals meet up with one another or come to chat with their favourite stallholders. When Cheryl Cohen first started working with London Farmers’ Markets, which co-ordinates South Kensington Farmers’ Market and 18 others around central London, street markets were in decline and the farmers’ market concept almost unknown. ‘The ethos for producers is pretty simple,’ says Cheryl. ‘You grow it, you sell it and, if you’re a farmer, what you bring has to be what you have grown yourself within a 25-mile radius of the the ethOS fOR pRODuceRS M25.
