I am honoured to be counted among such talented and intelligent souls, and I can’t imagine sharing this experience with any other group of people. iii iv Abstract The topic of this thesis is the representation and articulation of the concept of place within Indigenous literature. A comparative analysis, exploring different Indigenous worldviews, can lend an insight into the relationship of Indigenous peoples to their land, while retaining specific and distinct aspects of the localized experience. The very definition of Indigenous peoples is tied to an association with place; this connection not merely a physical occupation of a territory, but an ongoing conversation that includes relationship to ancestors, flora, fauna, topographical features, and cosmology. Literature allows the expression of the intangible, through the medium of language, which can articulate a sense of place. This concept is examined through the novel approach of comparing two Indigenous literary works from different parts of the world: Where the Rēkohu Bone Sings, a novel by Māori author Tina Makereti; and Nils-Aslak Valkeapää’s book of Sámi poetry, Trekways of the Wind. The analysis examines how Indigenous concepts of place are represented within these works, with language as a platform to articulate place through naming, translation and story. Finally, the juxtaposition of selected passages from the chosen literature, through Chadwick Allen’s trans-Indigenous methodology, gives a deeper insight into how literature can create a sense of place, from an Indigenous-to-Indigenous perspective. Sub- sequent conservation management of those areas has aimed to halt and re- verse that decline. The research reported on here has been designed to gain an understanding of the vegetation condition and trends and to assess whether the management was successful. Vegetation plots and photopoints were established and first surveyed in 1980, were resurveyed and expanded in coverage in 1987, and were reassessed and further extended in 1993. They show very clearly that forest health and sur- vival are profoundly dependent on conservation management - chiefly con- trol of domestic stock and feral mammals - and that the effectiveness of the management is patchy. Forest canopies are vulnerable to damage and death caused by storms, espe- cially on exposed sites, and if unprotected, forests quickly collapse and dis- appear - within a few decades.

The Chatham Islands consists of approximately 51 islands, only two of which are inhabited - Chatham and Pitt. Chatham, the largest island has an area of around 92,000 hectares. Almost a quarter of the island is covered by lagoons and lakes. The largest is Te Whanga Lagoon, which dominates the eastern side and is intermittently open to the sea. The descendants of the first settlers on the Chatham Islands were the Moriori (arriving at least 500 years ago). The Moriori developed a distinctive culture in the islands. The rich history of the islands and its first people still hold a strong presence to this day with their original name for Chatham Islands Rekohu, and the Maori name Wharekauri. Chatham Islands offer unspoilt beaches, unique fauna, and flora, fishing and great local seafood. The weather is typically oceanic with mixed conditions. Monthly temperature ranges from about 8 C in winter to 18 C in summer. Like the rest of New Zealand, it is possible to experience temperature and weather variations in the same day. The Chatham Islands are 45 minutes ahead of New Zealand time. Mobile phones can be left at home, as they will not work on the Islands (no cell phone service), providing an opportunity to relax and switch off from the world.   • Landbirds Recorded at the Chatham Islands, 1940 to December 1993
    LANDBIRDS RECORDED AT THE CHATHAM ISLANDS, 1940 TO DECEMBER 1993 By A.N.D. Freeman 2/527 Cashel Street, Christchurch ABSTRACT Between 1940 and December 1993,66 species of landbirds (including shore and freshwater birds) were recorded at the Chatham Islands. Of these, 38 were native and introduced breeding species, 4 were regular summer visitors and 24 were occasional visitors or stragglers. Published and unpublished records of these species on the Chatham Islands are summarised. INTRODUCTION Travers & Travers (1872), Forbes (1893), Archey & Lindsay (1924), and Fleming (1939) gave accounts of the avifauna of the Chatharn Islands, with Fleming's being by far the most detailed. Between Fleming's visit (November 1937-January 1938) and the 1950s, there are few records of Chatham Island landbirds. In the 1950s, L.C.Bel1 of the Wildlife Service (then the Wildlife Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs) began regular visits to the Chathams group. Records from his JuneIJuly 1951 and December 1952 - February 1953 trips are published in Bell (1955). The New Zealand Oceanographic Committee also sponsored an expedition to the Chathams from January-February 1954. The results of faunal surveys from this expedition are reported in Dawson (1955). Lindsay et al. (1959) report on their visit to the Chathams from February to May 1957. In the 1960s and 1970s, most data on landbirds at the Chathams were collected during four visits by Wildlife Service parties led by B.D. Bell: September-December 1961; April-May 1967; August-September 1968; and October 1977. Over the last 20 or so years, conservation programmes for several endangered species on the Chatham Islands have been developed, notably, among the landbirds, for the Black Robin.
