Barcelona, 19 (2013): 59-149 La col·lecció paleontològica Gómez-Alba del MGB-MCNB Jaume Gallemí1, Vicent Vicedo1, Gregori López2 i Luis Troya2 Abstract GALLEMÍ, J., VICEDO, V., LÓPEZ, G. & TROYA, L. The Gómez-Alba palaeontological collection of the MGB-MCNB. We present the catalogue of the palaeontological collection belonging to the late Dr. Julio Gómez-Alba, former curator of Palaeontology at Barcelona’s Museum of Geology, now integrated in Barcelona’s Natural History Museum Consortium. He proposed the donation of his collection to the city of Barcelona in November 2010 and the Barcelona’s Institute of Culture (ICUB) accepted it on the 11th February 2011. Formed by 4.990 specimens and 25 batches, it is not the col- lection of a palaeontological researcher but that of a general palaeontologist. Many items in this collection were figured in a field guide authored by Gómez-Alba (1988) dealing with the fossils of Spain and Europe. The catalogue is, apart from some minor corrections, the literal transcription of the database originally associated to the collection that –since its acceptation– has neither been updated nor revised. Key words: catalogue, collection, palaeontology, Gómez-Alba, MGB-MCNB.

Two species of Aalenian Tmetoceras have been identified on the basis of morphological, bio chronological and palaeobiogeographical data: T. scissum and T. regleyi. T. scissum was dominant among the Tmetoceras populations developed in the Betic and Lusitanian basins during Opalinum, Murchisonae and Bradfordensis biochrons. Popu lations coniposed by evolute individuals of T. scissum inhabited shelfal or oceanic envi ronments. A chronocline, from rectiradiate and primitive forms to flexicostate and derived forms, can be recognized in these populations of T. scissum. In contrast, shallow epiconti nental platforms were inhabited by involute individuals of T. regleyi. This second species was phyletically derived from T. scissum, representing an adaptive radiation from popula tions of shelfal or oceanic basins to populations of epicontinental platforms. ABSTRACT - In the Werlberg Member (Rupelian pro parte) of the Paisslberg Formation (Eastern Alps), an assemblage of colonial corals of eleven species pertaining to eleven genera and eleven families was identified:Stylocoenia carryensis, Acropora lavandulina, ?Colpophyllia sp., Dendrogyra intermedia, Caulastraea pseudoflabellum, Hydnophyllia costata, Pindosmilia cf. brunni, Actinacis rollei, Pavona profunda, Agathiphyllia gregaria, and Faksephyllia faxoensis. This is the first Oligocene coral assemblage reported from the Paisslberg Formation (Werlberg Member) of the Eastern Alps, consisting exclusively of colonial forms. The assemblage represents the northernmost fauna of reefal corals reported to date for Rupelian time. The Werlberg Member accumulated during marine transgression onto a truncated succession of older carbonate rocks. The corals grew as isolated colonies and in carpets in a protected shoreface setting punctuated by high-energy events. Coral growth forms comprise massive to sublamellar forms, and branched (dendroid, ramose) forms.

  • Geological and Geochemical Assessment of the Sharon Springs
GEOLOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE SHARON SPRINGS MEMBER OF THE PIERRE SHALE AND THE NIOBRARA FORMATION WITHIN THE CAÑON CITY EMBAYMENT, SOUTH-CENTRAL COLORADO by Kira K. Timm Dissertation submitted to the Faculty and the Board of Trustees of the Colorado School of Mines in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Geology). Golden, Colorado Date: ________________________ Signed: ___________________________________ Kira K. Timm Signed: ___________________________________ Dr. Stephen A. Sonnenberg Thesis Advisor Golden, Colorado Date: ________________________ Signed: ___________________________________ Dr. Stephen Enders Professor and Department Head Department of Geology and Geological Engineering ii ABSTRACT The Cañon City Embayment, located in south-central Colorado, is one of the oldest and longest oil producing regions in America. Production began in 1862 after the discovery of an oil seep emanating from the Jurassic Morrison Formation. This discovery led to an unsuccessful hunt for the oil spring’s source. The first oil field discovery occurred in 1881, founding the Florence Oil Field. This discovery led to a boom in drilling and production and the further discovery of the Cañon City Field in 1926. Production soon declined, but steady and continuous production occurs to this day. With the upswing caused by the discovery of unconventional petroleum systems, renewed interest led to higher drilling rates within the Cañon City Embayment. As of 2015, more 16.4 MMBO has been produced in the region. Present day production focuses on the fractured Pierre Shale and Niobrara petroleum systems, though exploration is expanding into the Greenhorn Formation. Deposition of both the Late Cretaceous Niobrara Formation and the Sharon Springs Member of the Pierre Shale occurred during transgressive phases within the Western Interior Cretaceous (WIC) Seaway, however significant geochemical and biological differences exist between these formations.
