The number assigned to each marriage is the number given to the marriage transaction in the registry. Since each nuptial occurrence involves not only the two marriage partners but also one or several witnesses, each numbered note may contain more than one identification. Where a witness appears more than once, no further reference will be made. These identifications, at best, are attempts to add some flesh to the bones. They are not meant to be exhaustive, but rather a means to show that the source material is rich and varied. With more time and effort, it should be possible to widen the identification process considerably. Because so many of the names listed are patronymics, no attempt has been made to differentiate between them, unless incontrovertible proof can be found in other sources. I. Mrs. Bred berg, who appears as a witness more than 70 times during this period of 12 years, was the wife of the Rev. Jacob Bredberg the rector of St. Ansgarius. She is also listed as Mrs. C. Bredberg (for Carolina, her baptismal name) and Mrs. J. Bredberg(as the wife of Jacob). She was b. in Hjo Parish (Skar.) 18 Aug. 1815, dau. of Carl Gustaf Bergstrom and Ulrika Carolina Carlsson. Shed. in Chicago 23 Oct. 1888. - Cook County Illinois Death Lists (microfilm in the Family History Center, Salt Lake City, UT, (CCD); Goteborgs landsarkiv (The District Archives of Goteborg) (GLA). Mrs. Peterson, who also appears as Mrs. J. Peterson, Mrs. John Peterson, Mrs. C. Peterson and Mrs. Carin Peterson for a total of 52 times as a witness, may be identical to the Bredberg dau., Ulrica Catharina, b. in Sweden 1843, and who according to a Swedish source was m. in America. In the list of parishioners in the St. Ansgarius Parish in the 1870s there is a John Peterson listed with his wife Carin. The fact that Mrs. Peterson appears as a witness at the rectory, usually together with Mrs. Bred berg or with one or two of the Bred berg sons, strengthens this theory. Carin would have been the popular form of Catharina. - St. Ansgarius Parish Records (SA); Joh. W. Warholm, Skara stifis herdaminne, 1-11 (Mariestad 1871-1874), I, pp. 363-364. 11 .
