Mcconaghy House Teacher Packet Contains Historical Information About the Mcconaghy Family, Surrounding Region, and American Lifestyle
1 WELCOME TO THE McCONAGHY HOUSE! Visiting the McConaghy House is an exciting field trip for students and teachers alike. Docent-led school tours of the house focus on local history, continuity and change, and the impact of individuals in our community. The house allows students to step into the past and experience and wonder about the life of a farming family. The McConaghy House is also an example of civic engagement as the community mobilized in the 1970’s to save the house from pending demolition. Through the efforts of concerned citizens, an important part of our local history has been pre- served for future generations to enjoy. The McConaghy House Teacher Packet contains historical information about the McConaghy family, surrounding region, and American lifestyle. Included are pre and post visit lesson plans, together with all necessary resources and background information. These lessons are not required for a guided visit but will greatly enrich the experience for students. The lessons can be completed in any order, though recommendations have been made for ease of implementation. We welcome comments and suggestions about the usefulness of this packet in your classroom. The West Santa Ana Branch (WSAB) is a transit corridor connecting southeast Los Angeles County (including South Gate) to Downtown Los Angeles via the abandoned Pacific Electric Right- of-Way (ROW). Goals for the Corridor: 1. PLACE-MAKING: Make the station the center of a new destination that is special and unique to each community. 2. CONNECTIONS: Connect residential neighborhoods, employment centers, and destinations to the station. 3. In 2005, Yoko Young, founder of the academy, choreo- graphed the full ballet for her dancers to perform on stage for Fremont and its surrounding commu- nities. She loved the holiday tradition of “The Nutcracker” and wanted local children and adults to be able to experience it. Sadly, at the end of Oc- tober last year Yoko passed away. She had always been an active and beloved member of Fremont, so Mayor Bill Harrison declared December 15 Yoko Young Day for the City of Fremont. Eighty-five student dancers, ages 5 to 18, will carry on Yoko’s much-loved tradition with three performances of “The Nutcracker” at the Ohlone College Smith Center on December 13 and 14. Service Alerts – Digital Displays TriMet has digital displays at most MAX Light Rail stations to provide real-time arrival information as well as service disruption/delay messaging. Some of the displays are flat screens as shown to the right. Others are reader boards. Due to space, the messages need to be as condensed as possible. While we regularly post the same alert at stations along a line, during the Rose Quarter MAX Improvements we provided more specific alerts by geographical locations and even individual stations. This was because the service plan, while best for the majority of riders, was complex and posed communications challenges. MAX Blue Line only displays MAX Blue Line disrupted and frequency reduced. The Hillsboro City Council approved the plan in late July before it was “unveiled” and distributed at Celebrate Hillsboro. Based on input and ideas from more than 5,000 community members for the future of Hillsboro, the Hillsboro 2035 Community Plan includes a vision of what people want Hillsboro to look like by the year 2035, and an action plan for getting there. The Hillsboro 2035 Community Plan builds on the success of the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, the original, award-winning plan, which led to many community enhancements, including Hondo Dog Park, community gardens, the Hillsboro Civic Center and Tom Hughes Plaza, and youth after-school programs. HillsDoer Day is October 3 Did you know that in 2014, more than 4,000 volunteers served 64,270 hours in Hillsboro? That’s incredible! Think of how those volunteers helped our Parks & Recreation, Library, Fire, and Police departments to deliver an even higher level of service. Others volunteered on City boards and commissions, at special events, or with community non-profit organizations. In August, the City held the 2nd Annual Volunteer BBQ at Shute Park to show appreciation to all City Mayor Jerry Willey volunteers, but the truth is, we cannot thank you enough for your service.
