Huff then scored another victory on the Guia Circuit, making a clean getaway and holding the lead through multiple Safety Car periods to finish just three- tenths of a second clear of Yvan Muller.

“I think 2010 was the year that I realised there was something special with what I do with my driving in Macao,” Huff says. “I think that year was when the confidence was at an all-time high, but also there was even more pressure on me. When you’ve won it two times in a row, everyone sort of thinks it becomes easy for you, but I can assure you it does not!”

“Although it’s the same circuit there are always some new elements and it affects the rhythm – you kind of have to relearn the circuit,” he says. “But 2010 was a good year and then we came back in 2011…”

In 2011, Huff won both of the FIA WTCC races that comprised the Macau Guia Race, becoming the first driver in history to do so. He describes that HUFF’S FIRST GUIA CIRCUIT VICTORY CAME IN 2008 year’s results as bittersweet – while he did everything he needed to do in hen Rob Huff stood atop the podium after last year’s Macau order to win that year’s FIA WTCC title, rival Yvan Muller finished third in Guia Race, the Briton celebrated not only a Macao victory but a the second race of Macau weekend and that was enough for the Frenchman W record-breaking one, becoming the most successful competitor to take the 2011 championship from Huff. ever on the Guia street circuit. With nine Macao victories to his name, Huff has an obvious affinity for the city and this year he returns to the much- Reflecting on that year, Huff says that he went to Macao with a clear goal loved Macau Guia Race, which runs the FIA World Touring Car Cup (FIA – he needed to win. In achieving that goal there was nothing further the WTCR) for the very first time. Briton could do outside of being proud of his achievement. “No one had won both races before so therefore I had to be happy.” “Macao is a hugely special place,” Huff says.

In 2008, Huff earned his first victory, winning a chaotic second race in the season finale of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (FIA WTCC). Huff had been running a lonely fourth for much of the race, but James Thompson, Augusto Farfus and Gabriele Tarquini ahead of him crashed out.

“The first time Macao is a very special time,” says Huff. in 2009, he was back – this time as a favourite. He dominated the first FIA WTCC race of the Macao weekend, and took the chequered flag by nearly eight seconds.

If there was pressure in 2009, Huff had twice the amount to deal with in 2010 as a two-time winner. He repeated his qualifying performance from BACK FOR A SECOND CONSECUTIVE WIN IN 2009

MACAU GRAND PRIX GAZETTE ISSUE 3 | 2018 5 “I wasn’t racing in TCR that year, but asked me if I’d like to enter Macao with them,” Huff says. “Of course I accepted, I wanted more Macao wins! While I had not really driven the TCR car, we went to Macao and did an amazing job, and to win the first-ever TCR race in Macao was very special.”

While Huff was forced to miss Macao as a competitor in 2016, he couldn’t not be a part of the weekend. Instead, he experienced the Macau Grand Prix from a different perspective – as a spectator. While it wasn’t quite the same, Huff still left Macao happy. “I was very pleased that my records weren’t broken!” he said.

Now with eight wins under his belt and tied with “Two Wheel King of Macao”, motorcycle hero Michael Rutter, for number of victories on the Guia Circuit, Huff was eager to make the record all his. Last year, he returned to the Macau Guia Race as part of the FIA WTCC, this time racing a Citroën C-Elysée.

While leading race 1, he lost concentration, hit the wall and was forced to retire after four laps. But while the team had worked tirelessly throughout the night to prepare the car, there was one thing Huff and the team hadn’t anticipated – rain. Huff, however, rebounded for Race 2. “There was huge pressure on me in “We woke up and it was raining and it was the first time we saw a wet Race 2, and I was able to finish on the podium and win the championship.
