(212)741-8163 Liz Magor I Have Wasted My Life May 21 - July 3 Opening Reception: Friday, May 21, 4 - 7 pm Andrew Kreps Gallery is pleased to announce I Have Wasted My Life, an exhibition of new works by Liz Magor at 22 Cortlandt Alley. On the wall, a new sculpture titled Perennial is formed from a duffle coat, which in the 1960s and 1970s had become a de-facto uniform for student protestors, including those part of the nascent environmental movement in Vancouver, where Greenpeace was founded in 1971. A near artifact from this time, the coat carries with it the accumulated wear from these actions. The artist’s own interventions seek to repair the garment, though in lieu of erasure, Magor marks the damage using paint, ink, and sculptural material. Simultaneously, Magor adds vestiges of the coat’s past activity, such as two cookies cast in gypsum placed in its pocket to resuscitate it to its prior use. Magor often positions humble objects at the center of her sculptures, the stuff that plays fleeting roles in our lives as repositories for memories and affection before being replaced. Three found workbenches, positioned throughout the galleries, become stages for these objects, suggesting sites for their rehabilitation. On each, a meticulously molded and cast toy animal rests between an array of accumulated items that range from the deeply personal, such as small collections of rocks, shells, and dried flowers, to those that are ubiquitous, such as Ikea Lack furniture, which is produced in a way that it is no longer contained to one place, or time. -

She is the Students’ Representative Council’s Corporation Representative, the President of Bishop’s chapter of the Golden Key International Honors Society, and a key member of the Diversity Coalition. She is currently applying to graduate school in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies. Under the supervision of Bishop’s professors, Dr. Jean Manore and Dr. Cheryl Gosselin, and with the financial support of the Eastern Townships Research Centre, Ms. Tarasoff had the opportunity to delve into the Margaret Owens archival holdings, the Brome County Historical Association archives and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Library and Archives, in addition to having the chance to review archival material collected by Margaret Owens, Nina Owens’ granddaughter. Ms. Tarasoff’s spent a year exploring the life and work of Nina May (Pickel) Owens and it can clearly be seen in the article below that the young 21st century student connected and indeed fell in love with the 19th century Eastern Townships artist. —Editor ABSTRACT Nina May (PicKeL) Owens, one of Canada’s earLiest women artists, was born in BoLton Centre, Quebec, on June 16, 1869. UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG IN COOPERATION WITH THE WAR AMPUTATIONS OF CANADA AND THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF CANADA. Mounted at the National Archives of Canada. 25 March - 25 April 1993. 40 p. catalogue. "No Man's Land"-forty paintings in assorted mediums-is a record of one wom- an's odyssey through the battlefields of Europe immediately following World War I. They are supplemented with five reproductions of wartime posters; the images and titles, such as Heros to the Front - Go! contrast ironically with the images of blasted landscapes and ruined cities that are just beginning to heal as nature and ordinary civilians trickle back to put down new roots. Mary Riter Hamilton's paintings, as this exhibition demonstrates, represented the final winding down of World War I. When executed, they were the work of a tal- ented, sensitive artist sponsored by the War Amputations Club of British Columbia. The 1993 show at the National Archives of Canada was a rewarding project involving the War Amputations of Canada, which not only helped finance the show and catalogue, but also joined in the production of a videotape that was part of the exhibition. The video itself, featuring Cliff Chadderton of the War Amps and Angela Davis, who organized the show with Sarah McKinnon, was a welcome component; it helped focus the paintings in a visitor's mind, providing both historic and human context. A casual viewer might have walked through "No Man's Land" in ten min- utes; the overview provided by the video, however, encouraged more thoughtful study and comparison. -

On Art Clubs and Classrooms: Navigating Artist/Teacher Identities by Looking at Anne Savage and Arthur Lismer Joanna Black, University of Manitoba This article is dedicated to: students I have taught who are on the brink of pursuing careers in art education while desiring to foster their professional art practice, and Leah Sherman, and her part in the enriched experiences I had in the 1980s at Concordia University and the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal. Through her, I was touched by the legacies of both Anne Savage and Arthur Lismer. “Do you think I can still ‘make’ my art when I teach?’ ask many soon to be teachers on the cusp of graduating from Bachelor of Education programs. They are uncertain about their ability to maintain their emerging artistic practice while teaching, and it is fitting to ask this key question given the two key role models seen by today’s graduates. On the one hand, their own university studio teachers are a dominant model representing the leading edge of art practice through the few tenure track positions at Schools of Art within higher education at the university. These young professional artists simultaneously maintain their ongoing artwork and exhibitions while having a career as a university art instructor/professor and it is expected and indeed vital that they continue art production. The second model, and the most immediate career path for most graduates in Art Education is within the kindergarten to grade twelve (K-12) public and alternative teaching profession, where there are few, if any professional expectations, pressures (or support) for K-12 art teachers to maintain a professional art practice. -
