  • The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: the Life Cycle of the Child Performer
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Humanities Faculty School of Music April 2016 \A person's a person, no matter how small." Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

By L. Frank Baum With Music and Lyrics of the MGM motion picture score By Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg Background Music by Herbert Stothart Dance and Vocal Arrangements by Peter Howard Adapted by John Kane from the motion picture screenplay By arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals Limited of New York Chairperson’s Message Welcome to the Mercury Theatre and thank you for supporting CO2’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Societies like ourselves are finding it more and more difficult to find a show to perform that is not only suitable but has a fairly large cast. We become very frustrated when we hit upon a show only to find that the performance rights are not available. Last year’s production, Little Shop of Horrors was written for a cast of 10 but our production team managed to make it work with a cast of 40. I must congratulate them as we were awarded the NODA Best Musical in Area 11 in addition to Will Mugford who played Seymour being voted Best Young Actor in Area 11, so congratulations to all involved CO2 has performed The Wiz, a more upbeat production, but we thought this year we would produce what has become the classic MGM story as produced on stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company. So, no pressure on our production team who have enjoyed working with our cast of very talented youngsters, and I would like to thank them for all their hard work. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have helped with this production of The Wizard of Oz, plus the CO2 Committee for all their support, and you our audience who we continually rely upon to make this possible.

Miller, Publicist S. J. Miller Communications 781-986-0732 BRANSON, MO –"Branson's most popular Christmas Show returns to the Andy Williams Performing Arts Center, and it continues a tradition that has continued uninterrupted since the sixties. The Andy Williams Ozark Mountain Christmas Show Presented by Jimmy Osmond stars the legendary Lennon Sisters who are celebrating their 25th anniversary of performing in Branson. Joining them will be the Ice Angels, and I'm so excited to bring championship ice skating home to Branson," says Jimmy Osmond, an original member of America's favorite musical family, the Osmonds, and the owner of the Andy Williams Performing Arts Center. Osmond first learned to produce ice shows during the years when he appeared with his family on the Andy Williams Christmas specials. "The Andy Williams shows always featured ice skating," Osmond recalls. He has since produced ice shows all over the world, including at the Osmond Family Theater in Branson. "Now I'm excited to have that exciting element back in my shows where it belongs. I'm especially thrilled to be working with world-class producer Jeb K. Rand, president and executive producer of Rand Enterprises & Productions." The ice skating show combines the beauty and athleticism of figure skating with live singers, actors, and a warm holiday feel. The production includes a festive mix of classic Christmas melodies, along with new modern-day favorites.

  • Interview with Danielle Hope – Maria Von Trapp in the Sound of Music
INTERVIEW WITH DANIELLE HOPE – MARIA VON TRAPP IN THE SOUND OF MUSIC YOU’VE JUST FINISHED THE UK TOUR OF JOSEPH, HOW WAS THE TOUR AND DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUR SUCCESSOR? It was my first touring experience and it was wonderful. I have made some lifelong friends and we had an amazing time. As for my successor – diction, diction, diction! There are so many words to remember, but just have a good time and enjoy telling the beautiful story. YOUR NEXT BIG PROJECT IS THE SOUND OF MUSIC, STARRING AS MARIA VON TRAPP – HOW DID THE ROLE COME ABOUT? I got involved through Bill Kenwright and I came into the office and did some singing for them and sang through the Maria music, which is just beautiful, and did a couple of scenes. They asked me if this was something I wanted to do, and I said, of course it is! I think it’s one of those amazing roles that is defining, and Julie Andrews is my hero, so to sing anything that she has done is just a gift. ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE FILM, WAS IT SOMETHING YOU KNOW FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD? Yes. I’ve never seen a stage production but that’s kind of nice because I’m approaching it from a completely blank perspective and it’s all fresh, so I can make it my own. As a child, for me it was Mary Poppins but my grandmother, who I lost last year, we sat and watched How To Solve A Problem Like Maria programme (the 2006 BBC talent show created by Andrew Lloyd Webber to find a Maria for his stage production) and it’s the only programme that I watched any of because she put it on and said to me, ‘you’d be able to do something like this’.
