2020-21 MONMOUTH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 4 MONMOUTH NOTES HAMMOND BREAKS THE THREE-POINT RECORD Deion Hammond set the Monmouth career record for made three pointers on February 6 at Manhattan, when he knocked in a three as the shot clock expired at the 6:01 mark of the second half. His 261st three moved him past Dave Calloway on the all-time list, with Calloway as the only player to hold the record previously as he was part of the program right at the introduction of the three-point line. Calloway held the record for 30 years before Hammond moved past him. PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR #2 Melik Martin was named the MAAC Player of the Week following the Manhattan series in which he was a half rebound shy of averaging a double-double for the two games. He posted a double-double in the second game with 14 and 10 after going for 18 and nine the prior night. Martin is putting together the best stretch of basketball in his career, coming off his first career double-double on 1/30 against Niagara with 14 points and 11 rebounds. In the last eight games, he has scored in double figures seven times (and netted nine points in the one he fell short of doubles vs. Quinnipiac), and is averaging 15.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, has 10 steals and is shooting 51.1% from the field. Martin has made a whopping 47 field goals in the last eight contests, including 14 triples, and has blocked three shots while dishing out 14 assists. THESE SENIORS In the February 6 win over Manhattan, all four Monmouth seniors scored in double-figures and accounted for 52 of the 71 points in the victory. For the season, Monmouth’s four seniors (Hammond, Papas, Martin, McClary) have scored 727 of MU’s 1,168 total points. All three Hawks averaging double digits are seniors, while McClary is the teams leading rebounder. BIG MAN NIKKEI Nikkei Rutty blocked a career high four shots in the win over Manhattan on February 6, the most in a game by a Hawk since the final game of the 2018-19 regular season, when Mustapha Traore had four rejections at Manhattan. Rutty also grabbed 11 rebounds in the game, tied for the most boards in a single game by a Hawk so far this year. THE MAAC STANDINGS In this unique season, it does not appear every MAAC team will play in 20 conference games, meaning the tiebreaker rules set forth preseason as a possibility will be placed into effect. Such rules place emphasis on total wins, placing the Hawks in first place by virtue of their 10 league wins, two more than second-place Siena’s eight. WE PLAY FAST According to basketball analytics website KenPom.com, Monmouth plays at the fourth fastest pace in the nation. Mon- mouth posts 75.7 possessions per game, scoring them in the top-four nationally based on an estimate of the tempo (possessions per 40 minutes) a team would have against the team that wants to play at an average D-I tempo. The next fastest team in the league ranks as Quinnipiac, who is 43rd in tempo at 71.4 possessions per contest. There are only four MAAC teams in the top 200, with Canisius at 100 and Rider at 172 joining MU and QU. 100 STARTS FOR #3 Deion Hammond became the 10th player in program history to start 100 games when he got the nod at Niagara on 1/30. Hammond has started 49 games in a row for the Hawks and 82 of the last 83, only missing the start in the 2019 MAAC quarterfinal win over Quinnipiac in which he played 29 minutes off the bench. ASSIST-TURNOVER RATIO The Hawks this season are plus in the assist-turnover category, dishing out 223 assists next to 206 turnovers. MU ranks second in the MAAC in the category at +1.08. Monmouth posted 23 assists to just nine turnovers in a win over Niagara on 1/29, marking a pair of milestones. The plus-14 is the best in a single game for MU under King Rice, while the 23 assists is the most since Rice’s second season, when the Hawks opened the season with 25 helpers in a win over Hofstra on November 9, 2012. Point guard Samuel Chaput is by far the league leader in assist-turnover, posting 50 assists-21 turnovers, a +2.38 marker. FIVE IN A ROW With the 1/29 win at Niagara, Monmouth won its fifth in a row for the first time since the program record 17-game winning streak that concluded the regular season and continued into the MAAC Tournament in 2017. The Hawks had previously won four straight, the sixth four-game winning streak MU has had in the last two seasons. THANK YOU, DR. MARILYN MCNEIL! In an announcement made last Wednesday, Monmouth University Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Marilyn McNeil announced that she will retire from her 53-year career in collegiate athletics on June 30, 2021. During that time McNeil has been a collegiate athlete, coached at the collegiate level, served has an administrator and has spent the last 28 years as Monmouth’s Director of Athletics. During her tenure, the Hawks have won 119 regular season conference championships while making 38 team appearances in various NCAA Tournaments. The Hawks have claimed 11 overall commissioner’s cups in the Northeast Conference and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and have finished lower than second just once (third in 1998-99) during her time in West Long Branch. On a national scale, McNeil’s contributions to Title IX cannot be understated. The Hawks have added seven sports during McNeil’s tenure, five of which have added collegiate opportunities for women.

2020-21 MONMOUTH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 5 MONMOUTH NOTES DEION AMONG NCAA ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS Deion Hammond is 16th in the NCAA in made three-pointers among active players at 261, and 13th among active players in three-pointers attempted with 724. His 1,536 total points is also 40th among active players. MYLES THE POINT GUARD Freshman point guard Myles Ruth has impressed early, with Monmouth ripping off seven of eight wins since he was in- serted as the starter. In nine of 15 contests this year, he has grabbed multiple steals. He has contributed in all facets of the game, scoring a career-best eight points and grabbing a career-high four steals in two of the last four games. He is shooting 50% from the field from the point guard spot, and 45.5% from beyond the arc. HAWKS, PAPAS LIST ATOP NATIONAL THREE-POINT RANKINGS Monmouth is 19th in the country in three-point percentage at 38.5%, having made 124 of 322 attempts. This is the best mark in the MAAC, and sits behind undefeated Baylor. Individually, George Papas is 10th in the country in three-point shooting at 44.8%, shooting 39-87 from deep. His numbers also lead the MAAC, and he is one of just eight players in the top 10 to have played in more than six games. Papas’ 37 makes are also 58th in the country and tops in the MAAC, and he is one of 10 players nationally to make 9 or more threes in a game, doing so on opening night against Hofstra. Two players have made 10 in a game, with eight others tying Papas’ nine. MAAC WEEKEND UPDATE Through seven weekends of MAAC play, Monmouth has picked up four sweeps and won the opening game six times in seven tries. The Blue and White have only dropped a pair of games once, doing so just after the New Year at Siena. 1,000 WINS AS A PROGRAM Monmouth won it’s 1,000th game as a program on Sunday, 1/10 against Marist, 72-62. The milestone win came in the programs 65th season dating back to 1956, when the Hawks debuted with a 51-47 win over Jersey City State behind 17 points from Jack Perri on 12/1/56 at the Long Branch YMCA. In that time, remarkably, the program has had just five full-time head coaches and all coached at least 10 seasons for the Blue and White. This excludes longtime Monmouth assistant Ron Krayl, a 35-year MU assistant, who won seven games as the interim head coach in 1986-87. HAMMOND’S CLIMB OF THE ALL-TIME SCORING LIST Hammond is currently in sixth place on the all-time Division I scoring list with 1,536 points, which puts him 203 points behind John Giraldo and Alex Blackwell, who are knotted for second. Last week vs. Manhattan, Hammond moved into sixth place all-time on the program’s scoring list. Hammond is the seventh player at the MU DI level to reach 1,500. Next in his sights is Corey Albano’s 1,599 points, which Hammond is 63 shy of. NEVER EVER TRAILED In the two-game sweep of Marist, Monmouth not only led for 78:19 of the 80 minutes, the Blue and White did not trail for one second on the weekend. In Saturday’s game, a Hammond jumper put MU up 25 seconds in, and on Sunday, Melik Martin netted a runner 36 seconds in. KING GETS 150 Head Coach King Rice became the fourth coach in Monmouth history to win 150 games on 12/18 against Saint Peter’s, with all of them coming at the helm of the Hawks. Rice’s first win came on 12/6/11 at Navy, with win #50 coming over Siena on 3/1/15. His 100th win took place at Manhattan, when a late Micah Seaborn triple propelled his Hawks over the Jaspers on 2/10/17. Rice joins three other MU coaches at the 150 win mark (Bill Boylan, Wayne Szoke, Dave Calloway), and just two that have done it at the Division I level (Szoke, Calloway). There are currently 173 active DI head coaches with 150+ wins, with Rice recently joining that group. Of those 173, only 34 of them have won 150+ games at only one school. Rice is the only coach currently in the MAAC to post 150 wins at their current institution. ALL THE NOTES ON PAPAS TYING SINGLE-GAME THREE-POINT RECORD -In the season opener, George Papas tied the program record for made three-pointers in a single game with nine. His outburst tied Monmouth Hall of Famer and former head coach Dave Calloway’s mark, set on January 2, 1990 in a win at Pepperdine. The record stood for more than 30 years before Papas tied it. -Papas is one of four players in school history to record 7+ threes in a game on two different occasions, joining Justin Robinson, Dejan Delic and Dave Calloway. WHAT. A. COMEBACK. Monmouth came back to force overtime and eventually win in the extra session against all odds on 1/15 vs. Quinnipiac. Monmouth trailed by 12 in the second half, by nine with four minutes to play, and by eight with 90 seconds left. MU also was down by four with 12 seconds to go and QU shooting one-and-one, which they missed. A Martin three, a split pair of Bobcat free throws, and a McClary baseline jumper sent the game to OT, capping the furious comeback. ICE IN HIS VEINS Marcus McClary hit arguably the two biggest shots in the 1/15 win over Quinnipiac. The senior knocked down a baseline jumper with 0.6 seconds left to cap a monster comeback, and then drilled a three in OT to essentially ice the game for the Blue and White. 2020-21 MONMOUTH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 6 HEAD COACH KING RICE • North Carolina, 1992 • 10th Season • 159-151 Overall • MAAC: 92-58 King Rice has been on the Monmouth sideline for nine seasons and enters his 10th in 2020- 21. He has a pair of MAAC Coach of the Year honors to his credit. He has set Monmouth records Rice Year-by-Year for wins in a season with 28 and consecutive victories with 17. Rice also set a MAAC Record Year Overall Conf. Notes in 2016-17 by winning 18 league games for the first time ever. He has also won the JohnMc- 2011-12 12-20 10-8 NEC Tournament Lendon National Coach of the Year honor, while being named a finalist for the Ben Jobe Award. 2012-13 10-21 5-13 The 2019-20 season saw Rice lead the Hawks to an 18-win campaign, tied for the third 2013-14 11-21 5-15 most in a season in his tenure. He had his third player ever named to the All-MAAC First Team 2014-15 18-15 13-7 MAAC Tournament semis in junior guard Deion Hammond, who finished second in the league in scoring, while backcourt 2015-16 28-8 17-3 MAAC Reg. MU Basketball enters its eighth season in the building af- ter playing previously in Boylan Gymnasium. Monmouth University ushered in a new era in the school’s history with the completion and opening of the long anticipated arena in the Fall of 2009. It not only serves the school’s 23 Division I Athletics programs, but is also a key asset for the entire University community. The facility features classroom and seminar space and a confer- ence center that can be used for meetings, or be partitioned and used for study hall, clinics or workshops. The gym, which features a state-of-the-art fitness center, is also the location of the Leon Hess Champions' Hall, Mon- mouth Athletics Hall of Fame and Varsity Club, which will be used for hospi- tality for Blue/White Club members. Student lounges and study areas with complete wireless Internet access are also available. The OceanFirst Bank Center, which is connected to Boylan Gym and the Steadman Natatorium, is 153,200 square feet of space for students and the community to utilize in many different capacities. It’s most prominent fea- ture is the 4,000 seat arena, which is the nest for the Monmouth men’s and women’s basketball programs. The arena also features a six-lane, 200-meter indoor track, which can be used for training and competition all year long. A fitness center with state-of-the-art strength and cardiovascular equipment is also housed here. The arena provides varsity athletes & coaches with meeting facilities, locker rooms, practice and competition facilities & expanded and upgraded ame- nities. The University Bookstore was also relocated from the Stafford Stu- dent Center, which will improve accessibility for commuting students, and the additional square footage will enable the stocking of a greater variety of merchandise. In the summer of 2011, with funds raised through private donations, Mon- mouth’s varsity athletics weight room was given a $200,000 overhaul. Renovations, which began in June and were funded entirely by the gener- ous donations of Monmouth supporters, included a brand new Mondo floor, replaced HVAC system, new lights and a fresh paint job. The aesthetics of the room were improved with MU branded wall decorations.
