We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with Dr. Timnit Gebru, who was terminated from her position as Sta Research Scientist and Co-Lead of Ethical Arti cial Intelligence (AI) team at Google, following unprecedented research censorship. We call on Google Research to strengthen its commitment to research integrity and to unequivocally commit to supporting research that honors the commitments made in Google’s AI Principles.
Until December 2, 2020, Dr. Gebru was one of very few Black women Research Scientists at the company, which boasts a dismal 1.6% Black women employees overall. Her research accomplishments are extensive, and have profoundly impacted academic scholarship and public policy. Dr. Gebru is a pathbreaking scientist doing some of the most important work to ensure just and accountable AI and to create a welcoming and diverse AI research eld.
Instead of being embraced by Google as an exceptionally talented and proli c contributor, Dr. Gebru has faced defensiveness, racism, gaslighting, research censorship, and now a retaliatory ring. In an email to Dr. Gebru’s team on the evening of December 2, 2020, Google executives claimed that she had chosen to resign. This is false. In their direct correspondence with Dr. Gebru, these executives informed her that her termination was immediate, and pointed to an email she sent to a Google Brain diversity and inclusion mailing list as pretext.
The contents of this email are important. In it, Dr. Gebru pushed back against Google’s censorship of her (and her colleagues’) research, which focused on examining the environmental and ethical implications of large- scale AI language models (LLMs), which are used in many Google products. Dr. Gebru and her colleagues worked for months on a paper that was under review at an academic conference. In late November, ve weeks after the piece had been internally reviewed and approved for publication through standard processes, Google leadership made the decision to censor it, without warning or cause. Dr. Gebru asked them to explain this decision and to take accountability for it, and for their lackluster stand on discriminatory and harassing workplace conditions. The termination is an act of retaliation against Dr. Gebru, and it heralds danger for people working for ethical and just AI — especially Black people and People of Color — across Google.
Research integrity can no longer be taken for granted in Google’s corporate research environment, and Dr. Gebru’s ring has overthrown a working understanding of what kind of research Google will permit. This is also a moment of reckoning beyond Google. As we know, Dr. Gebru is one of the few people exerting pressure from the inside against the unethical and undemocratic incursion of powerful and biased technologies into our daily lives. This is a public service, and its importance cannot be overstated. Google’s retaliation against Dr. Gebru, and its move to silence this work, concerns us all.
We have the following demands of Google Research leadership:
1. We demand that Je Dean (Google Senior Fellow and Senior Vice- President of Research), Megan Kacholia (Vice-President of Engineering for the Google Brain organization), and those who were involved with the decision to censor Dr. Gebru’s paper meet with the Ethical AI team to explain the process by which the paper was unilaterally rejected by leadership.
2. We demand transparency to the broader public, including Google users and our colleagues in the academic community, about Google leadership’s decision to order Dr. Gebru and her colleagues to withdraw their research on large-scale language models. This has become a matter of public concern, and there needs to be public accountability to ensure any trust in Google Research going forward.
3. We demand that Google Research make an unequivocal commitment to research integrity and academic freedom, drastically strengthening the commitments made in Google’s Research Philosophy, and commit to supporting research that furthers the goals of Google’s AI Principles by providing clear guidelines on how research will be reviewed and how research integrity will be respected.

We come from di erent o ces. We have di erent roles, managers, and life stories. What brought us all together is that we’ve stepped up to help organize our colleagues, to work together for a better, safer, fairer, and more ethical workplace.
Google explicitly encourages us to pursue exactly these goals. The company’s code of conduct states unequivocally: “don’t be evil, and if you see something that you think isn’t right — speak up!” And we did.
We spoke up when we saw Google making unethical business decisions that create a workplace that is harmful to us and our colleagues. We participated in legally protected labor organizing, ghting to improve workplace conditions for all Google workers. We joined together to hold Google accountable for the impact on our workplace of its business decisions, policies, and practices on a range of topics. Some of these topics, such as demanding Google improve its treatment of our temp, vendor, and contractor colleagues (“TVCs”), supporting our TVC colleagues in Pittsburgh through the process of successfully forming a union earlier this year, challenging the protection of executives who sexually assault employees, opposing its retaliation against employees who have complained about, or protested against, mistreatment and discrimination, and supporting our colleagues in Zurich who held a labor law educational meeting despite the company’s attempts to cancel it, are entirely internal to our workplace. Other topics, like Google’s work with Customs and Border Protection, the decision to place an anti-LGBTQ and anti-immigrant think tank leader on the company’s AI Ethics council, developing drone technology for the U.S. Department of Defense, the unequal and unethical treatment of harassment and discrimination on YouTube, a secret project to work with the Chinese government to launch a censored search engine in China, and the hiring of one of the architects of the Trump administration’s family separation policy, extend far beyond, impacting not just our workplace, but also Google’s users and customers, and indeed the entire world. …

Nov 25, 2019 Google’s Next Moonshot: Union Busting
The rally on 11/22 in defense of workers placed on leave. Those workers and two others were later fired.
Four of our colleagues took a stand and organized for a better workplace. This is explicitly condoned in Google’s Code of Conduct, which ends: “And remember… don’t be evil, and if you see something that you think isn’t right — speak up.”
When they did, Google retaliated against them. Today, after putting two of them on sudden and unexplained leave, the company red all four in an attempt to crush worker organizing.
Here’s how it went down: Google hired a union-busting rm. Around the same time Google redrafted its policies, making it a reable o ense to even look at certain documents. And let’s be clear, looking at such documents is a big part of Google culture; the company describes it as a bene t in recruiting, and even encourages new hires to read docs from projects all across the company. Which documents were o limits after this policy change? The policy was unclear, even explicitly stating the documents didn’t have to be labeled to be o limits. No meaningful guidance has ever been o ered on how employees could consistently comply with this policy. …

#GoogleWalkout went viral, trending around the world and still being covered by international media one year later. On the day of the walkout, we reached 3.2 million impressions just on @GoogleWalkout’s tweets alone. In the year since, workplace organizing in tech has seen incredible growth. We’ve been so inspired by additional actions at other companies, and often get asked for a list of best practices in this space.

Nov 1, 2019 When We Organize, We Win: #GoogleWalkout, One Year Later

A year ago today, at 11:10am local time, more than 20,000 Google workers walked out around the world, starting in Tokyo and Singapore and moving West. We were protesting misogyny, racism, unethical decision making, and systemic inequity.
Since then, a movement has grown, at Google and across tech.
While worker dissent and labor organizing were happening well before, the Walkout was the rst time we showed real power. Thousands of people stepped up to contribute, with hundreds of local organizers taking the lead.
Since then, organizing has spread. Workers campaigned to end forced arbitration (and won for full time workers!); they fought for fair treatment and better bene ts for TVCs (and won!); they pushed back on Dragon y (and won!), the Advanced Technology External Advisory Board (and won!), CBP contracts, and YouTube’s disregard for the safety of the LGBTQ community. Contractors in Pittsburgh voted to unionize (and won by a 2:1 margin!). Google workers also organized against retaliation, and in the process created a support network to help workers who are often facing gaslighting, unjust performance reviews, and isolation. …

Jul 16, 2019 Onward! Another #GoogleWalkout Goodbye
In April, two of the organizers of the Google Walkout, Meredith Whittaker and Claire Stapleton, came forward with the stories of the retaliation they’ve faced as a result of speaking out at the company. Claire left Google in June— yesterday was Meredith’s last day.
