MASSIMO PATRIZI PREMESSA Il Piano Comunale di Emergenza di Protezione Civile, è stato elaborato con lo scopo di fornire al Comune uno strumento operativo utile a fronteggiare l’emergenza locale, conseguente al verificarsi di eventi naturali o connessi con l'attività dell'uomo; ci si riferisce ad eventi che per loro natura ed estensione possono essere contrastati mediante interventi attuabili autonomamente dal Comune, dalla Regione e della Provincia in quanto titolari dei Programmi di previsione e prevenzione. Il presente Piano di Emergenza, obbligatorio a norma di legge, è uno strumento a forte connotazione tecnica, fondato sulla conoscenza delle pericolosità e dei rischi che investono il territorio comunale e, nella prospettiva offerta dalla legislazione, esso trova una chiara collocazione tra gli strumenti che l’Ente ha a disposizione per la gestione dei rischi. Sulla base di scenari di riferimento, individua e disegna le diverse strategie finalizzate alla riduzione del danno ovvero al superamento dell'emergenza ed ha come finalità prioritaria la salvaguardia delle persone, dell’ambiente e dei beni presenti in un'area a rischio. Il Piano include quegli elementi informativi concernenti le condizioni di rischio locale che debbono essere recepite, e in alcuni casi risolte, dalla pianificazione territoriale. Nel caso di grosse calamità il Piano rappresenta lo strumento di primo intervento e di prima gestione dell’emergenza. -

The Pacific coastal range extends almost continuously from the southernmost tip of California to the northernmost corner of British Colombia and around coastal Alaska. These mountains are part of the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a term which refers to the active geology that exists all the way around the Pacific Ocean, affecting every coast it touches. The theory of plate tectonics suggests that the Pacific Ocean (or rather, the “plate” of earth’s crust beneath it) floats about on top of the molten core of the earth and bumps up against continents. Where the ocean and the continents meet, the pressure between them forces molten lava to the surface of the earth. After thirty million years of bumping, exploding, and oozing, the hardened lava forms majestic, cone-shaped mountains, many of which still contain fire at their cores. The volcanoes occasionally spew lava, rocks, gases, ash, and steam, and once in a great while, they blow their tops, as Mount St. Helens did in Washington State in 1980. More often, though, the heat that is generated by the earth’s plates grinding into one another is released more slowly through cracks and fissures in the volcano. Underground reservoirs of water are heated, expand, and are forced to the surface, producing hotsprings whose temperatures range anywhere from 90- to 160-degrees Fahrenheit. These natural pools are loaded with dissolved minerals from the earth that long have been believed to carry healing powers. -

Map 44 Latium-Campania Compiled by N. Purcell, 1997 Introduction The landscape of central Italy has not been intrinsically stable. The steep slopes of the mountains have been deforested–several times in many cases–with consequent erosion; frane or avalanches remove large tracts of regolith, and doubly obliterate the archaeological record. In the valley-bottoms active streams have deposited and eroded successive layers of fill, sealing and destroying the evidence of settlement in many relatively favored niches. The more extensive lowlands have also seen substantial depositions of alluvial and colluvial material; the coasts have been exposed to erosion, aggradation and occasional tectonic deformation, or–spectacularly in the Bay of Naples– alternating collapse and re-elevation (“bradyseism”) at a staggeringly rapid pace. Earthquakes everywhere have accelerated the rate of change; vulcanicity in Campania has several times transformed substantial tracts of landscape beyond recognition–and reconstruction (thus no attempt is made here to re-create the contours of any of the sometimes very different forerunners of today’s Mt. Vesuvius). To this instability must be added the effect of intensive and continuous intervention by humanity. Episodes of depopulation in the Italian peninsula have arguably been neither prolonged nor pronounced within the timespan of the map and beyond. Even so, over the centuries the settlement pattern has been more than usually mutable, which has tended to obscure or damage the archaeological record. More archaeological evidence has emerged as modern urbanization spreads; but even more has been destroyed. What is available to the historical cartographer varies in quality from area to area in surprising ways. -

Bernard C. Brian Rose, Supervisor of Dissertation This dissertation investigates how Rome organized and paid for the considerable amount of labor that went into the physical transformation of the Middle Republican city. In particular, it considers the role played by the cost of public construction in the socioeconomic history of the period, here defined as 390 to 168 B.C. During the Middle Republic period, Rome expanded its dominion first over Italy and then over the Mediterranean. As it developed into the political and economic capital of its world, the city itself went through transformative change, recognizable in a great deal of new public infrastructure. -

THE INSULA OF THE MENANDER AT POMPEII: INTERIM REPORT By ROGER LING, F.S.A. INTRODUCTION THE British project in the Insula of the Menander at Pompeii was instituted in 1978 by the late Dr. J. B. Ward-Perkins in consultation with the then Superintendent of Antiquities for Campania, Professor Fausto Zevi. Funding has until now been provided by a generous grant from Imperial Tobacco Ltd., a proportion of the profits of the exhibition 'Pompeii 79' held at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 1976-7. To these mentors and sponsors the author is deeply indebted—to Imperial Tobacco for their enlightened patronage of archaeological research, to Professor Zevi for first suggesting a programme of recording and analysis in the Insula of the Menander, and above all to Dr. Ward-Perkins for taking up the suggestion and largely shaping the present project. This project is in a very real sense his brainchild, and it is as a tribute to his memory that we intend to continue with it and bring it to completion in the manner that he would have wished. Special thanks must also be given to Dr. Stefano De Caro, the Director of the site at Pompeii, who has been unfailingly courteous and helpful over the past five years, and to his henchmen, Dr. Federico, the assistant director, Sig. Pelli, the technical director, Sig. Cirillo, his assistant, and Sig. Sicignano, the head foreman, for their invaluable practical assistance. Finally, mention must be made of the chief members of the team. After a brief exploratory season in September 1978, full programmes of work have been conducted in August-September 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982. -

Several veterans thought the Fifth was the best yet, and so it was said about all the previous ones. We like to think it’s because we are learning to do things better, rather than that an Olympic- style ritual declaration of the ‘best ever Games’ is taking hold. Yet that would be no bad thing, either; the pronouncement, however much expected, always meets with gleeful and often justified assent. Things nearly got off to a very bad start. Something not far short of an official hurricane (‘poco ci mancava’, said my taxi driver, ‘there wasn’t much in it’) struck the Monday before arrival and, though it miraculously harmed no one in Ercolano and damaged no archaeology, it did uproot trees, mangle safety barriers and create other hazards such that the site had been closed all week, only opening again on the morning we intended to visit. The Superintendency, which this year has been particularly disorganised in the matter of issuing permits, had not yet issued ours, and there was much anxiety Thursday night as to what would happen the next day. -

Application to Operate a Public Bathing Place Pennsylvania Department of Health June 2015 PA Department of Health Page 1 Public Bathing Place Application Instructions for Filling out the Application to Operate a Public Bathing Place Under the Pennsylvania’s Public Bathing Law (35 P. S. §§ 672-680d) and the regulations in 28 Pa. Code Chapter 18, it is unlawful to operate a public bathing place without first obtaining a permit from the Department of Health. Once construction has been completed, it is the responsibility of the owner/operator of the public bathing place to contact the district office of the Pennsylvania Department of Health and arrange for an operational inspection (See Page 3 – District Offices of the Department of Health). The purpose of the operational inspection is to ensure that the facility is operating in a safe and healthful manner and in compliance with the Public Bathing Law and the regulations in 28 Pa. Code Chapter 18. Upon satisfactory completion of the operational inspection, a permit to operate a public bathing place will be issued by the Department. To obtain a copy of the Department of Health regulations for public bathing places, contact the district office of the Department of Health or visit the following website: http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/028/chapter18/chap18toc.html. The applicant should consult with the design engineer or architect for the dimensions of each unit and the specifications for the recirculation, chemical treatment, and filtration equipment. A unit is an individual swimming pool, beach, hot tub, wading pool, or other artificial or natural body of water that is to be used for public swimming and bathing. -
