6 THE PERSONALISATION OF THE CAMPAIGN Paul Strangio and James Walter This chapter considers the characteristics of the leaders of the major parties, Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten, the circumstances with which they were confronted and the way opportunities were seized or lost to confound the widespread expectations that had preceded the 2019 election campaign. The media’s inordinately ‘leader-centric’ bias in campaign reporting is long- established. Yet it might have been thought that the bitter experience of leadership turmoil in both parties of government over the previous decade would have put a brake on public expectations that the ‘right’ leader would provide the solution to present dilemmas. Indeed, some commentators remarked that ‘Australia has had enough of messianic leaders for a while’ (Hartcher 2019a). The Labor Party’s campaign—choreographed as a team effort—seemed apt if such a transition in leadership style proved better attuned to the zeitgeist. For their part, Liberal Party MPs were reportedly unhappy with the ‘presidential’ aspect of Malcolm Turnbull’s campaign at the 2016 election and reluctant to see a reversion to the leader ‘standing in’ for the party (Crowe 2019). And yet, this was precisely what defined the campaign, as Morrison, ‘the Messiah from the Shire’, contrived what had seemed an improbable victory. Leader-centrism appears once more to have been endorsed. Observers argued that Morrison had ‘to carry the operation because there’s no alternative’ (Murphy 2019b). On the other hand, it rapidly became apparent that playing the lone fighter, battling the odds against what 107 MORRISON'S MIRACLE appeared to be an ascendant Labor Party, suited Morrison’s combative temperament and played to his strong suit. -

Joseph The Essay as Polemical Performance University of Technology Sydney Sue Joseph The essay as polemical performance: ‘salted genitalia’ and the ‘gender card’ Abstract: On October 9, 2012, the then Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard rose to her feet in Canberra’s Parliament House, and, in response to a motion tabled by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, delivered her blistering Misogyny Speech. Although Gillard’s speech was met with cynicism by the Australian Press Gallery, some accusing her of playing the ‘gender card’, it reverberated around the world and when the international coverage poured back into the country, many Australians stood up and listened. One of them was author, essayist, classical concert pianist and mother, Anna Goldsworthy. Shortly after the delivery of The Misogyny Speech, Quarterly Essay editor Chris Feik approached Goldsworthy to write the 50th essay for the Black Inc. publication with his idea to view this event through a cultural lens. It took several months to research and compose the characteristically long-form (25,000 word) essay that Quarterly Essay publishes every three months as a single volume; ‘Unfinished Business: Sex, Freedom and Misogyny’ was launched at the Wheeler Centre in Melbourne on July 1, 2013, five days after Julia Gillard was deposed from her prime ministership by Kevin Rudd. This paper takes a look back at the 50th issue of the Quarterly Essay, to discuss with its author her essay-writing process and the aftermath of publication. Goldsworthy is erudite as she looks at the construction of the essay, its contents, and her love of essay writing. Although she confesses to not having a definition for the form, she believes it does not matter; that its fluidity is a basic constituent element. -

Peter Braig by Andrew Burke The closest thing Morry Schwartz has to a Sydney office is a table at Fratelli Paradiso. So it's no surprise that the Melbourne-based publisher and property developer has chosen to meet at the Potts Point institution as he gears up to launch the latest addition to his growing media and publishing empire – a thrice-yearly journal called Australian Foreign Affairs to add to The Monthly, theQuarterly Essay, The Saturday Paper and his imprints including Black Inc. and Nero. It's a sunny day and by the time I arrive at 12.30pm he's already been conducting meetings at a shaded outside table for hours. He quickly wraps up the last of them – with his newest editor, Jonathan Pearlman, who he's chosen to steer what Schwartz refers to as AFA – with vigorous agreement on the challenge China faces to lift hundreds of millions more out of poverty. With his grey, shoulder-length hair, black, slightly rumpled suit and white shirt without a tie, Schwartz reminds me a little of actor Christopher Lloyd in his Back to the Future guise. He is the personification of the migrant made good. Born in postwar Hungary to Jewish parents who had survived the Holocaust, he was smuggled across the border to Germany when he was one and spent most of the next nine years in Israel. -

I’m a journalist with an MA in International Journalism from City, University of London, and then worked for AAP as a reporter, sub, copy taster and feature writer for nearly 15 years. Since then I’ve been a freelance writer. I am happy for this submission and my name to be published together, but please do not publish my address or phone number. Terms of Reference a. The current state of public interest journalism in Australia and any barriers to Australian voters’ ability to access reliable, accurate and independent news The most significant source of public interest journalism in Australia until recently was the ABC. Its public ownership is important and helped protect its independence, guaranteeing Australian voters access to reliable, accurate and independent news. In this section I will outline how this independence has been seriously undermined in recent years - so that I would now regard a number of other outlets more reliable. I then explain why I think it is important to remove government interference from the ABC and how we can insulate our national broadcaster from it. The ABC’s role as a public interest broadcaster Under the Australian Broadcasting Corporation 1983, the ABC has a clearly enunciated public interest role. In Part II, 6. [email protected] DOI: https://doi.org/10.5130/nesais.v4i1.1530 Abstract: Since colonisation, history has been whitewashed to suit the socio-political aims of the settler. The $50 million redevelopment of the landing site of Captain Cook, disingenuously renamed the ‘Meeting Place Precinct’, is stark evidence of this. This essay argues that in order to arrive at a comprehensive understanding of history, Australia must engage in a process of national re-founding via truth-telling and active listening between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples respectively. Keywords: history wars; frontier violence; British invasion Introduction What Aboriginal people ask is that the modern world now makes the sacrifices necessary to give us a real future… to let us be free of the determined control exerted on us to make us like you. Let us be who we are – Aboriginal people in a modern world – and be proud of us. Acknowledge that we have survived the worst that the past had thrown at us, and we are here with our songs, our ceremonies, our land, our language and our people – our full identity. What a gift this is that we can give you, if you choose to accept us in a meaningful way. (Yunupingu 2016) The way forward for Australia as a nation must be rooted in a process of truth-telling that prioritises First Nations voices and acknowledges the colonial violence inherent to our history from the moment of British invasion. -

Australia’s banks are among the best of the best in the world. They are firmly regulated, and have not taken any inappropriate risks.” “Well that is as it may be, but all my neighbours and friends are taking their money out all the same.” When Ken Henry, the Secretary of Australia’s federal Department of Treasury, had this phone conversation with his mother shortly after the collapse of US financial giant Lehman Brothers in September 2008, it quaintly confirmed what he and his colleagues had begun to fear for some time. Despite the solidity of its own economic fundamentals, Australia was going to be significantly affected by the fallout from the meltdown of the US financial system that had been building momentum throughout the year. As early as September 2007, Great Britain had experienced a bank run (on Northern Rock) followed by an expensive government bailout. Since then, one after the other, major US financial powerhouses had come under the gun because of their exposure to “bad debts”. Some, like Bear Stearns, were bailed out when the US Government arranged a sale to a stronger financial institution. But when Lehman Brothers came to the brink, US financial authorities let it go under, sending major shock waves through global financial markets. Now governments and financial institutions around the world were sounding the alarm. Ordinary citizens like Ken’s mother were reading the writing on the wall – and beginning to act on it, This case was prepared for ANZSOG solely for teaching purposes by Professors Paul ‘t Hart and John Wanna (both Australian National University) . -
