Qualifications of the Expert Panelists:

All Expert Panelists were invited by the three co-authors (biographical sketches follow the Expert Panelists) and they will serve as an Expert Panelist to create the 2021 edition and maintain it until another update is published, in about 2026.

We have formed a group of Expert Panelists who, collectively: • Represent and have expertise about a variety of approaches to diversity, equity and inclusion work, such as social justice, organizational development, compliance, dignity, and competence. • Represent and have expertise about a variety of dimensions of diversity, such as gender/gender identity, race/ethnicity, disabilities, age/generations, religion, sexual orientation, country of origin, language, and so forth. • Have expertise about organizations either from an internal or external point of view. • Have expertise about specific content topics included in the GDIB such as products or services, recruitment and development, compensation, training and education, supplier diversity, sustainability, compliance, and so forth. • Have experience and knowledge about working in various cultures around the world with some specificity regarding D&I/DEI/Culture & Values work in world regions. • Have expertise and experience about various sectors and industries such as healthcare, government, state owned agencies, telecommunications, financial services, engineering, mining, nonprofits, corporations, education and so forth. • Have experience with a variety of sizes of organizations, generally as large, medium, and small/micro. • Model the generally understood competencies (skills, knowledge, and behaviors) of the broad spectrum of diversity, equity, and inclusion work. • Are knowledgeable about innovation and D&I best practices. • Have a good reputation for working with integrity in the D&I/DEI field.

What we mean by collectively – is that within the total group of Expert Panelists we include individuals who have expertise and experience in as many of the areas above as possible. For example, we may include a few people with narrow expertise such as compensation or Supplier Diversity as we want that specific expertise even though their experience may not be global or comprehensive. We strive for a reasonable balance of representation in all criteria although we did not use a quota methodology or mindset as we formed the Expert Panel Group for the 2021 edition.

Expert Panelists do not “represent” an organization. They are invited because of their individual expertise and experience, not because of a position at a specific organization.

Natasha Aruliah

Natasha identifies as a racialised, immigrant settler and currently lives and works on the unceded and traditional territories of the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil- Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations, also known as Vancouver, Canada. She is a Sri Lankan Tamil, born in the UK, and part of the growing Tamil diaspora.

Originally trained as a counselling psychologist, she worked as a therapist with immigrant, refugee, and marginalised communities. There she witnessed the impact of the systems and structures on people and the assault on their identity. Both through understanding her own lived experience, her identity and witnessing others grapple with theirs, she moved into working more comprehensively with the systems and structures that cause harm, inequity, and injustice.

She now works as a facilitator, consultant, educator and coach, specialising in social justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) and transformative change for both individuals and organisations. With over 25 years’ international experience, specifically across the UK, Europe, USA, and Canada, her work focuses on lasting systemic change addressing colonial legacies and using anti-oppressive, decolonising practice. Her work is grounded in interdisciplinary practices integrating intercultural competence and cultural humility/safety, emotional intelligence and embodied practice, critical thinking, leadership and development, transformative organisational development, social justice and anti-oppression.

She leads workshops and retreats, facilitates brave conversations in teams, coaches leadership, key staff and board members, as well as conducts organization assessments, policy and process reviews. She strives to create spaces for all voices to be brought in and supports dialogue, often difficult and courageous, across difference and on topics that are usually avoided, taboo, and challenging. In particular, she seeks to support organizations to transform and change both for their staff and the people they serve. Her work has included a government initiative facilitating community dialogues on racism around the province of British Columbia as part of an anti-hate-crimes strategy.

Her work is informed by her personal experience as an immigrant, woman of colour, a parent of bi-racial children and caregiver to aging, immigrant parents. She is currently writing a book about her work and specifically the role of identity.

Delfina Daglio

Delfina’s first contact with diversity was as a little girl, when she joined an international organization of pen pals. She had “friends” all over the world with whom she exchanged letters and learned about their countries and culture. When she finished high school, Delfina chose to study Economics, with the goal of helping people from underdeveloped nations achieve a better quality of life and a dream to work for the United Nations.

In 2003, she temporarily moved to Milan (Italy), where she was part of a large group of exchange students from all over the world and enjoyed one of the best experiences in her life! In 2004, she moved to Madrid, where she worked for a consulting agency and got the chance to travel all over Spain for her work.

In 2008, Defina joined IBM as a Finance Business Controls leader for Spanish South America (a region comprised by 8 countries). Less than 3 years later, she finally landed her dream job: Diversity & Inclusion leader for the region. This role has allowed her to show the passion she had always had for people. She truly believes that when people are given the chance to bring their whole selves to work, they are more engaged and productive. She is proud to be an IBMer and to share this passion and enthusiasm for inclusion inside and outside IBM.

In 2011, she was selected to participate in the Corporate Service Corps program, and in March 2012, travelled to Indore (India) to help develop a Marketing & Communications campaign for Urban Health Resource Center (UHRC), a not-for-profit organization that addresses health, nutrition and wellbeing of the disadvantaged urban dwellers. She spent six weeks in India, four working with UHRC (living with other 11 IBMers from nine different countries), one travelling around India and the last one working as a volunteer in two homes run by the Missionaries of Charity.

Delfina lives with her husband and her three small children in Buenos Aires (Argentina). She enjoys doing volunteer work, travelling and learning more about different cultures, reading and dancing.

Paul Deemer

Paul is located in Essex – just outside London – in the UK. He has been an HR professional and member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) for over 35 years. Over his career, he has worked in the public and voluntary sectors – beginning with a 12-year spell in local government where he “cut his teeth and learnt his trade”. During this period, he not only acquired his qualifications, but he also built up an expertise in the fields of recruitment, employee relations, employment law and equal opportunities.

When he moved to the children’s charity, Barnardo’s, he began as a regional HR manager — supporting over 30 community-based projects across London and the South of England. He was then asked to take on the role of national equality and diversity manager at Barnardo’s — at a time of cultural significance in the UK as it coincided with the publication of the Macpherson Report into the death of teenager Stephen Lawrence. It was also at Barnardo’s where he undertook an intensive emotional intelligence programme which at that time was a relatively young science. He describes this experience as “life changing”.

From there, Paul moved into the health sector – where he has remained ever since. After a short spell as a HR lead in an NHS trust, he was seconded into the national Department of Health and Social Care’s Equality and Diversity Team to help them develop the first country-wide strategy in this area. Paul currently works for NHS Employers – an employer’s body which represents and supports NHS trusts across England – and is helping NHS organisations embed diversity and inclusion good practice across the NHS.

He also works on various diversity working groups and initiatives – with bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists and the Recruitment Industry Disability Initiative. Paul writes frequently about all aspects of diversity through various social media channels – including Twitter and LinkedIn – and has published many articles on the subjects of inclusion and equity.

Basil Manning

Basil Manning’s anti-Oppressive work began in South Africa, in the 60’s when he recruited Steve Biko to the UCM and got involved in the Black Consciousness Movement. Self-awareness of his own oppression resulted in ‘owning’ his oppression of others – especially women. So began his journey into Social Inclusion. Other ‘-isms’, beyond racism and sexism followed later.

From 1968, while in exile in Britain, his chaplaincy and community work continued with an anti-oppression focus and included the ‘Scrap Sus Campaign’ and ‘Christians Against Racism and Fascism,’ (cf. CARAF in Agenda for Prophets, Bowerdean, 1980). Building on his early experience, his initial efforts on SI were with voluntary organisations in the UK such as Voluntary Action Lewisham, affiliates of the Community Work Training Group, SCM and churches. This experience in the field resulted in the co-creation (with Ashok Ohri and Wendy Davies) of a training model on Social Inclusion. That Organisational and Social Development model has underpinned his work on SI globally — primarily in Southern, East and West Africa, Asia, Europe and Canada.

Chaplaincy, community development, community organising and leadership development initiatives, demanded growth in understanding the imperative of participation in working with people. As his facilitation skills quickly became acquired, OD followed, bringing coherence to his organisational work on Social Inclusion. From 1981 in and from Botswana, consultancies included Cooperation Research, Development and Education (CORDE), the Botswana and Zimbabwe Christian Councils of Churches, Mindolo Ecumenical Institute (Kitwe, Zambia) and the United Church of Canada.

On his return to South Africa in 1992, several consultancies with CSOs ran parallel with his corporate work with various petroleum companies, financial institutions, mines, government departments, parastatals and VSOs globally. Training of SI facilitators to increase competency has always been a mark of Basil’s work.

His writings include Community Work and Racism (RKP, 1982 co-edited with A. Ohri and P. Curno) and co-author of Racism: the Response of Community Work (with Ashok Ohri); The Biblical Concept of Justice in Reformed World (WARC Volume 40 No.6); an interview in Religion and Reconciliation in South Africa (A Chapman and B. Spong, Eds. Cluster Publ. 2003). Basil Manning is an Associate of the Federal Theological Seminary (AFTS), Alice, SA and also holds a Master’s of Theology (Kings, London).

Stéphane Patry

Stéphane is the Senior Human Resources Advisor since 2010, responsible for the management of all aspects of the Diversity and Inclusion program of the Ville de Montréal. He implements action plans to ensure that the city, with its 27,000 employees, is a fair, equitable, diverse and high performing organization. He strongly believes in the benefits of strategic partnerships with non-profit organizations and intercultural expert participation to strengthen diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Stéphane works closely with organizations promoting the employability of immigrants and refugees and is especially concerned about the risks of professional deskilling for Montréal’s new citizens. In 2017, he formed a working committee with experts of the “Réseau national des Organismes Spécialisés dans l'Intégration en emploi des Nouveaux Immigrants”, a group of 20 non- profit organizations, to address recruiting and inclusion issues for immigrants within Montréal’s workforce. This new committee organized a networking event based on the pairing of employment counsellors and recruiting officers. Recently, the committee built an inclusion index for the city. In 2016, Stéphane’s team received an award of excellence from The Canadian Race Relations Foundation for an internship program “Le Programme de Parrainage Professionnel de la Ville de Montréal”. This program provides opportunities for newcomers to obtain their first work experience in Canada at a professional level.

Stéphane recognizes the importance of working with non-profit organizations dedicated to the inclusion of citizens with disabilities. He has been the leader of projects aimed to improve perceptions about people with disabilities and to raise awareness amongst managers and employees.

He is also a member of the employability and education circle of the Montreal indigenous community network and has been involved in the organization of eight aboriginal employment fairs. His goal as a member of the circle is to help ensure that all Indigenous people within the greater Montreal area have access to programs and services that will allow them to attain their full professional potential.

Stéphane is now working on the integration of a new intercultural approach to the city’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategy.

Gamze Sofuoğlu

Gamze Sofuoğlu was born blind. She has been passionately struggling to change the perception of people towards disabilities, as well as the perception of disabled people towards their disabilities. She has been working on projects regarding accessibility, history and philosophy of disability, and rights of the disabled community ever since she discovered that disability was more a consequence of social barriers, than a body-related personal issue.

Gamze graduated from the Department of Psychology in Boğaziçi University and made her Master’s degree on Cognitive Psychology at the same university. Her thesis was an investigation on the effect of disability perception on the temporal distribution in lifespan, content and recollective experiences in personally significant autobiographical memories. Gamze has been working at Turkcell, world’s first digital operator headquartered in Turkey, since 2014. She is the product manager of mobile applications and accessibility solutions for disabled individuals such as audio description and indoor navigation technologies for blind people, instant Sign Language translator for deaf people and educational games for children with autism. The products she leads has a wide international recognition and a great number of awards from prestigious platforms such as GSMA, Meffys and MIT Technology Review.

Between 2014 and 2016; she prepared and hosted a radio show on sensation and perception of blindness and disability issues with her friend Kürşat Ceylan, cofounder of Smart Cane WeWALK, on one of the most popular radio stations of Turkey. Her radio show won the best new radio show award in 2014 in Turkey.

Gamze is writing articles on disability issues, mentoring blind children to support them to be more autonomous and confident in their lives, and providing consultancy for the projects on accessibility and disability.

She strongly believes in an equal and barrier-free life. She will fight for the accessibility until the end of her life with the principle “Nothing about us without us!”

SONDRA THIEDERMAN, PhD

Sondra Thiederman is a consultant, trainer, and speaker in bias reduction, cross-cultural business, and diversity & inclusion. Recipient of a doctorate from UCLA in Cross-Cultural Studies, she began her career helping health care providers deliver more effective care to patients and clients of all backgrounds. From that foundation, she branched out to work with corporations in electronics, manufacturing, and health care.

Her work has taken her into the offices and training rooms of organizations such as Boeing, Motorola, General Motors, Xerox Corporation, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Marriott Corporation, the Mayo Clinic, Century 21 Real Estate, American Express, and AT&T. She was also exposed to the inner workings of notable associations including the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Mortgage Bankers Association, the American Society of Association Executives, and the Arthritis Foundation. She has authored numerous articles, books, and videos designed to provide the practical tools for which she has become known. Her books include: “Bridging Cultural Barriers for Corporate Success: How to Manage the Multicultural Workforce,” “Profiting in America’s Multicultural Marketplace; How to Do Business Across Cultural Lines”, “Getting Culture Smart: Ten Strategies for Making Diversity Work,” “Making Diversity Work: Seven Steps for Defeating Bias in the Workplace,” “The Diversity and Inclusion Handbook” and “Three Keys for Defeating Unconscious Bias: Watch, Think, Act.” Her videos include: Defeating Unconscious Bias: Five Strategies; Gateways to Inclusion: Turning Tense Moments into Productive Conversations; and Is it Bias? Yumiko Thomas

Yumiko Thomas currently serves as the HR Advisor, Policy and Organizational Development, at the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), an intergovernmental organization exclusively devoted to promoting the rule of law and sustainable development. Her role widely spans across a range of work in the HR field, including employee policies, performance and talent management, internal learning and employee engagement. Her latest pursuit has been the promotion of D&I as part of IDLO’s ongoing organizational change. She organized an introductory workshop on D&I to its senior management in October 2019. She hopes to continue the work of mainstreaming D&I across the organization through various channels, including the development of a comprehensive D&I strategy and a measurement framework.

For Yumiko, the concept of diversity has always been close to her heart. Japanese, but immersed in a foreign culture during most of the formative years, she knew what diversity meant, without even knowing its name. Her professional interest and current career as an HR professional in the international development sector was driven by the desire to be where borders, nationalities, cultures, and differences interact and sometimes clash. Her work — to help colleagues to feel a common sense of belonging and mission along with their individual uniqueness, and, at the same time, to support the role of the “employer” to recognize, respect, and nurture each of the talent within its workforce — is a daily challenge but one she takes on and learns from with a life-time worth of interest and appreciation.

Prior to her work with IDLO, she served in several HR roles at other international organizations, including at the World Food Programme (WFP) where she worked on its Yemen program; as well as for the Asian Productivity Organization (APO), a regional intergovernmental organization for the Asia-Pacific. Yumiko was also part of a team at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, deliberating as a member country delegation of the UN General Assembly.

Yumiko holds a Master’s degree in International Politics from the University of Melbourne, where she studied governance structures of various international organizations and agencies.
