2019 Annual Report 2019 ANNUAL REPORT 1 2 Our 12th Annual Roll Call of Nations Wreath Laying Ceremony commemorated the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 70th anniversary of the formation of NATO. We announced a new partnership with the American Cold War Veterans organization to educate young people on the lessons of the Cold War, and we presented our Truman-Reagan Medal of Freedom to Col. Gail S. Halvorsen (known as the "Berlin Candy Bomber"), a retired officer and command pilot in the US Air Force who helped conduct the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49. communism are more widely known than at any point since 1989 – and this past year, 2019, was our most active yet It marked the 30th anniversaries of two of the most seminal moments in communist history – the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square Massacre As we looked back at those two events – one joyous, one tragic – it can clearly be seen that 1989 was a tale of two cities Those cities, of course, are Berlin and Beijing 3 A YEAR of ACHIEVEMENTS 2019 IN REVIEW In 2019, communist regimes from China to Cuba expanded ACHIEVEMENTS their power across the globe, threatening freedom from Hong Kong to Venezuela Meanwhile, in America decades of failure to teach young citizens about the evil ideology, brutal history, and lasting legacy of communism revealed itself in American culture and politics The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation worked tirelessly in 2019 to teach the truth about the failures of Marxist ideas, seek justice for those still living under communist tyranny, empower citizens to combat communism’s malign influence, and honor the more than 100 million victims of communism We equipped teachers with tools to educate students about communism's horrible legacy, engaged with lawmakers and dissidents to expose and condemn communist crimes, and convened friends of freedom from dozens of countries to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall 4 Message from the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR This year the world marked the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall Millions of people the world over celebrated the triumph of liberty and remembered those who labored to bring that joyous day to fruition But at VOC, we did more than the communist regime, perhaps decisively, finally joining a remember We reminded Americans of the Liu Xiaobo, November 19882 I FROM 1988 to early 1989, it was a common sentiment in Beijing that China was in crisis. Economic reform was faltering due to the lack of a coherent program of change or a unified approach to reforms among Chinese leaders and ambitious plans to free prices resulted in widespread panic over inflation; the question of political succession to Deng Xiaoping had taken alarming precedence once more as it became clear that Zhao Ziyang was under attack; nepotism was rife within the Party and corporate economy; egregious corruption and inflation added to dissatisfaction with educational policies and the feeling of hopelessness among intellectuals and university students who had profited little from the reforms; and the general state of cultural malaise and social ills combined to create a sense of impending doom. On top of this, the government seemed unwilling or incapable of attempting to find any new solutions to these problems. It enlisted once more the aid of propaganda, empty slogans, and rhetoric to stave off the mounting crisis. University students in Beijing appeared to be particularly heavy casualties of the general malaise.

Berlin and its inhabitants showed itself to us in absolutely the best ways – very many thanks to all of you in the Berlin Club – you did such a fantastic job. There was nearly double the number of participants as you expected – 250 instead of 150 – but everything worked out splendidly and you gave us the best of Berlin. To mention just a few special items from the program: the boat trip on the Spree, excellent sightseeing of the city, meeting Mrs. Schadt (the life companion of President Gauck) and the Parliament building, the “Reichstag”, with its marvellous view. But the highlight of the Cultural Days for me personally – and many members agreed – was the entertainment in the members' homes. It must be such a challenge to entertain so many people at home as well as take them sightseeing in the city. For two days we also held the BCI meeting with ten Federation Presidents as well as the Vice- President of the Southern Hemisphere, the Editor of the Bulletin and the Archivist. We missed the President of the Northern Hemisphere and the Presidents of Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Russia. We discussed many interesting matters. What can we do to have more countries represented with their Presidents? Every President is expected to send her report about the situation in her Club and how the Club life is progressing – especially important when she is not present herself.
