BARNETT (Cottesloe — Premier) [12.04 pm]: I rise today to inform the house of the 150th anniversary of the death of Governor Sir James Stirling, founder of the Swan River Colony and first Governor of Western Australia. James Stirling was born in 1791 and was a British naval officer, explorer and land administrator. The eighth of 15 children, he entered the British Royal Navy as a volunteer at the age of 12, and over the course of the next 15 years saw action off the coast of Spain, Argentina, Mississippi, Hudson Bay, the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the West Indies.

FRANCIS (Jandakot — Minister for Veterans) [12.10 pm]: Mr Speaker, I will start by acknowledging the presence in your gallery of Royal Navy cadets and Royal Marine cadets from the United Kingdom who are visiting Western Australia and who will take part in the centenary of the Anzac commemorations in Perth on Saturday. Welcome to Western Australia. [Applause.] Mr J.M. FRANCIS: Mr Speaker, as part of the Western Australian government’s centenary of Anzac initiatives, my office has produced a booklet entitled “This Gallant Company of Brave Men”, which is about Western Australia’s 17 Victoria Cross and two George Cross recipients. Of our 17 Victoria Cross recipients who were either born in Western Australia or who enlisted in Western Australia, one fought in the Second Boer War, 10 fought in the Great War, five fought in the Second World War and one fought in the war in Afghanistan. Both of our GC recipients fought in the Second World War. Our Victoria Cross and George Cross recipients are extraordinary men who came from varied backgrounds with different life experiences. I refer to Private O’Meara, VC, who laboured for four days with both casualties and vital stores while displaying awe-inspiring gallantry and cheerfulness in the hellish and nightmarish fields of Pozieres. I refer also to George Gosse, GC, who displayed cool daring whilst defusing volatile German mines in Bremen and to Benjamin Roberts-Smith, VC, MG, who displayed a determined and professional application of his trade in Afghanistan.

    Major William Hay Gosse MC - Killed in Action on 5 April 1918 William Hay Gosse was born at Kent Town, South Australia on 21 October 1875, the son of famous explorer William Christie and Agnes Gosse (nee Hay). He received his early education at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School and Geelong Grammar School. In 1886, he commenced his studies at the Collegiate School of St. Peter in Adelaide. William later attended the University of Adelaide and from 1895-1897, he was the well-regarded stroke of the University Men’s Rowing Team. Adelaide did not compete in the 1899 Inter-colonial University Boat Race and this allowed William the opportunity to row with the Melbourne team. Despite a strong head wind and five prior losses in succession, William stroked the Melbourne crew to a five-length win on their three-mile home course. In 1896, he had competed in the Oxford-Cambridge boat race at Henley on Thames. In late 1899, William enlisted for service in the South African War (Boer War) as 104 Trooper William Hay Gosse. He was posted to the 2nd South Australian Mounted Rifles Contingent and embarked from Adelaide on 26 January 1900. The Contingent included Trooper Harry “The Breaker” Morant. The conflict in South Africa is generally divided into three phases: The early phase, from October to December 1899, when the British armies, mainly infantry, were defeated or besieged by highly mobile Boer mounted troops. The second phase, from December 1899 until September 1900, which involved a British counter-offensive, resulting in the capture of most of the major towns and cities of South Africa.

BREATHING Troy's actions have now been acknowledged in a list of Operation Falconer honours, llnnounced on November 27. Then a member of AUSCOTIHREE, he has receh'ed the Commendation for Distinguished Service. TIle citation accompanying the award said Troy was tasked with the disposal of two sea mines in the pon of Umm Qasr, Iraq. "During an operation. one of the mines beeame dis­ lodged and another diver was pmned between the mine and the hull oflhe minelayer," the citation continued.
