“We were eager to sponsor a lecture in OLLI’s 1619 series. The topic is urgent–COVID, systemic racism, inequality of justice, and the all too frequent brutal displays of violence confronting us daily. OLLI has been a lifeline during this pandemic. The leadership and volunteers continue to bring outstanding programming into our homes. Thanks to OLLI, our minds are definitely not in lockdown!” Bob Bagramian and Linda Bennett Sponsors of the 1619 Lecture with Professor David Goldberg

Equity OLLI-UM is a community program of the Geriatrics Center.

Inclusion

In 2019, OLLI-UM adopted a strategic plan that mandated the creation of our own Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee in order to ensure that DEI values would be infused throughout our program at every level. The committee drafted a mission statement which is detailed below. Our goal was to lay out a roadmap for the program and ourselves, so that we would be accountable in realizing our objectives.

DEI MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the DEI Committee is to increase the diversity of OLLI membership and create an environment that welcomes all; increase awareness of racial, social, economic, educational and health disparities experienced by marginalized communities; encour- age members’ self- education and self-reflection on issues related to implicit bias; and promote positive, transformational change leading to the eradication of racial and social injustice in ourselves, the OLLI membership, and the community-at-large.

We will do this through: • Spearheading efforts that lead to continuing awareness and education of our members on issues related to racial and social inequities through lectures, workshops, book discussions, and study groups, and encouraging members to initiate their own self-education on these issues • Working closely with other OLLI committees to ensure DEI principles are infused and integrated throughout the program • Partnering both within UM and with external organizations with similar aims to collaborate on relevant programming and initiatives • Evaluating the outcomes of our DEI strategies, wherever possible, in order to identify and implement continuous improvements and identify positive and negative outcomes such that initiatives can either be continued or improved upon

OLLI Winter Spring 2021 Catalog_final_pages.indd 14 11/23/20 12:00 PM Make a Gift to OLLI-UMi We each have our own reasons for enjoying OLLI! But whatever your OLLI passion, your financial support can make a difference in ensuring that OLLI continues to flourish and expand.

• OLLI was there for you when you needed it most this year… IF • you appreciate OLLI’s low fees and scholarships to those in need… • you are proud of how OLLI responded during the pandemic so members could stay connected…

THEN please consider making a donation to OLLI. No amount is too big or too small.. There are two main ways to give:

OLLI-UMs Annual Fund (helps with today’s needs!) While OLLI receives generous in-kind support from UM, a gift to the OLLI Annual Fund ensures membership and events remain affordable and available to all. While OLLI members and volunteers provide a strong foundation of skills, annual support from donors is needed to maintain and grow operations and meet the needs of our community. Donors contributing $100 or more annually are listed on the OLLI Donor Honor Roll.

Friends of OLLI-UM Endowment (helps sustain OLLI’s future needs!) The Friends of OLLI Endowment was created to ensure OLLI will continue to enrich the lives of others well into the future. Endowment funds are key to ensuring the flexibility of OLLI to respond to current and future needs such as technology, space, programs and access.

HOW YOU CAN GIVE: To contribute online by credit card please go to: giving.umich.edu/give/med-osher To contribute by mail please see the registration form in the center of the catalog.

What is the new Commons? The Commons is a Zoom space that is free and open to all members every day, all day. You can create or join an ongoing group. You can schedule a meeting or a personal group event. The meeting or event will go on the Commons calendar so the time you reserved is held for you. COMMONS What are the groups I see on the Commons calendar?

The Commons was created to make it easy and free to connect and talk with others as we remain limited to a largely virtual world. The groups you see, e.g., The Schmooz- ery, Coffee+Show or Tell, Lunch Bunch, Book Beat, are informal groups that generally consider broad themes for conversation throughout the month. There is no registra- tion or cost to participate in these groups. Check the Commons calendar to see what’s occurring, put the Commons Zoom address (see above) in your browser and join in the discussion. Join every time the group meets or only when you want to be part of a conversation.

The Commons is a project of the Social Interaction Committee OLLI in collaboration with staff and other OLLI programs.

IT’S BEEN A (COVID-19) YEAR WHERE ARE WE AND WHERE ARE WE HEADED? This series is co-hosted by OLLI-UM and the UM Turner Senior Wellness Program.

Now that we have all been living with the COVID-19 pandemic for nearly a year, the basics are familiar to all of us. But challenges continue to develop and many unknowns remain. We are still asking:

What are the newest developments in prevention, testing, treatment, and vaccines? How long is this going to last? How are individuals and organizations coping? How do we think about the dual crises of the pandemic and climate change? Anticipating the future, how will our world look different?

In this continuing series of presentations on the COVID-19 pandemic, we will explore the current situation and look into the future. Our expert speakers will add to your knowledge about Covid-19 and inspire many provocative questions.

Brain Aging and What You Can Do About It with Thad Polk, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan Day/Date: Thursday, March 4 Time: 2:00-3:30pm Cost: $10

Aging is associated with subtle declines in some cognitive functions, but not others. As we age, we tend to become a little more forgetful, we get distracted more easily, and we can’t process information quite as quickly. At the same time, verbal knowledge and what’s sometimes called wisdom tend to remain stable and may even improve with age. Why is that? This talk will explain what happens to our brains as we age, how those changes might relate to age-related cognitive declines, and what we can do to help our brains age more gracefully.

Thad Polk is the Samuel D. Epstein Collegiate Professor of Psychology and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan. He received an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Computer Science and Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University and postdoctoral training in cognitive neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Polk’s research uses functional imaging of the human brain to investigate the neural architecture underlying cognition and how that architecture is influenced by age, by experience, and by genetics. He has lectured extensively on topics related to the human brain, including producing four courses for The Great Courses series. He was also named to the Princeton Review list of the best 300 professors in the U.S. Brought to you by the OLLI Study Group Committee Winter/Spring Catalog 2021 27

Stay In or Go Out as You Explore the Treasures of Washtenaw County

As we plan for 2021 and anticipate a second Covid-19 winter and spring, join Olli@Home as we experience some old and new treasures of Washtenaw County.

Whether you embrace the Danish concept of Hygge (cozily staying in) or the Norwegian concept of Friluftsliv (happily going out in nature), you’ll find a lot to enjoy in OLLI@Home.

This series of 11 programs on Monday afternoons from January through May, is designed to introduce experiences and opportunities that may brighten our days at home or encourage us to go out for an adventure. If the “eating” sounds more fun than the cooking and baking, we can watch the cooking and baking demos and enjoy the results by ordering and popping in for takeout. And who amongst us wouldn’t enjoy an afternoon cup of coffee or tea, a glass of wine with cheese or a sampler of artisanal chocolate?

In addition, the programs will remind us of some of the people, businesses and institutions that are indeed treasures of our community, and introduce some new ones. Our programs will also offer us a chance to support these treasures as they strive to continue to be part the community Let’s Build Our Community of during and after Covid-19. OLLI@Home Members! OLLI Winter Spring 2021 Catalog_final_pages.indd 33 11/23/20 12:00 PM OLLI READS OLLI Reads Presents: Black Bottom Saints | by Alice Randall Monday February 8 at 10am Alice Randall’s magical Black Bottom Saints brings to life Detroit’s legendary neighborhood, one of the most influential, artful Black communities in America. The novel, reminiscent of E.L. Doctorov’s Ragtime, comes alive through the voice of Joseph “Zig-gy” Johnson (1913-1968) who was a real-life nightclub impresario, dance studio instructor, and entertainment columnist for the Michigan Chronicle. It takes its shape from the Catholic Saints Day Books with Ziggy choosing his own “52 Saints.” Randall balances the stories of these larger-than-life “Saints” (Dina Washington, Joe Louis, and Sammy Davis, Jr.) with local heroes (Charles Diggs, UAW negotiator Marc Stepp, and Maxine Powell), and creates enthralling characters whose unstoppable ambition, love of style, and faith in community made this black Midwestern neighborhood the rival of New York City’s Harlem.

Alice Randall was born in Detroit and raised in Washington DC. She is a Harvard-educated author of novels, including The Wind Done Gone, Pushkin and the Queen of Spades, Rebel Yell, and Ada’s Rules. She is also the first African American woman to write a #1 Country and Western song (XXX’s and OOO’s which celebrates Aretha Franklin). With her daughter, Caroline Randall Williams, she co-authored the acclaimed cookbook Soul Food Love which won the NAACP Image award and the young adult novel The Diary of B. B. Bright, Possible Princess, which received the Phillis Wheatley Award. Alice Randall is a Professor and Writer-in-Residence at Vanderbilt University. Professor Randall’s presentation is co-sponsored by OLLI’s DEI Committee. The DEI and OLLI Reads will also be co-hosting a panel of participants who will share their perspectives on the era of Detroit’s Black Bottom neighborhood. More details will be announced in the near future.

The Spirit Ambulance: Choreographing the End of Life in Thailand | by Scott Stonington Wednesday February 24 at 3pm With his unique perspective as both a cultural anthropologist and a physician, Scott Stonington explores decision-making at the end of life in contemporary Thailand in his book The Spirit Ambulance. Stonington spent two years in Thailand studying how families struggle to craft good deaths for their elders in the modern world while honoring their Buddhist traditions.

Stonington’s gripping ethnography documents how Thai families attempt to pay back a “debt of life” to their elders through intensive medical care, followed by a medically assisted rush from the hospital to home to ensure a spiritually advantageous last breath. The result is a powerful exploration of the nature of death and the complexities arising from the globalization of biomedical expertise and ethics around the world. Ray Yung, M.D., Chief of the Geriatrics Center, will be introducing Dr. Stonington.

Scott Stonington is a medical and cultural anthropologist at the University of Michigan and an internal medicine physician. He has a Ph.D in Anthropology from UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and a MD from UC San Francisco. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Stonington is an Assistant Professor, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in the Department of Anthropology as well as the International Institute (Core Faculty for Global Environment and Health), a Hospitalist in the Department of Internal Medicine at VA Medical Center and a Primary Care Physician at St. Joseph Mercy Neighborhood Family Health Center in Ypsilanti.

Art History III: Early Christian and Byzantine Art

Each meeting of Art History III will focus on five or six works of architecture and fine arts, so that we can explore each one in depth. Learners will bring their travel, curiosity, and questions to this study group, thereby enriching it. History of Art III emphasizes syncretism between older and newer artistic traditions, for example, the transition from pagan worship to Christianity in the second through fourth centuries CE in Italy. The earliest art of the fledgling Christianity was hidden in the underground catacombs in Rome. Beginning in the early fourth century CE when Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire, worshippers flocked to the huge and spectacular churches in Rome and Jerusalem. As Rome’s power diminished in the following centuries, Constantinople in Asia Minor became the center of the Christian world, developing worship practices, beliefs, and art which contrasted with the western Catholic Church in Rome. If time permits, we will look at early Islamic art and the syncretism that occurred when Islam spread to the Christian territories in the West. Responding Cost: $35 to writing prompts, we will reflect on the events of past decades and consider how our past helps Memoir Writing us understand this year of COVID-19.

Participants will learn how to tell the stories Day/Time: Wednesday, 1:00-2:30pm of their lives and those of their ancestors. We Date: January 20 - February 10 will meet weekly, and each participant should Instructor: Diane Nash be prepared to read a story they have written Cost: 30 (including the first class). Jan Price calls herself a “very amateur memoirist” who has written her Writers Unlimited story after being motivated by an OLLI class. Participants present their creative essays, short Day/Time: Friday, 10:00am-12:00pm stories, poetry, or novels for constructive criticism Dates: January 22 - April 9 and suggestions for improvement from the Instructor: Janis Price group. Each participant submits their writing Cost: $50 online to all other participants in advance of the Friday meeting. Comments will be offered after Memoirs and Personal Essays each reading. Discussion leader Jerry Janusz has been a participant in this group for twelve years. This group meets every week from September to June, except for holidays. There are no specific Day/Time: Friday, 10:30am-12:00pm assignments. Each writer strives to find his or Dates: January 8 - August 27 her own subject matter and stylistic voice. We Instructor: Jerry Janusz read our work aloud and discuss it, making Cost: $80 constructive suggestions for improvement. The important thing is to write well enough to interest others and to convey our ideas clearly. We will use a flexible combination of email, telephone, and video conferencing during the pandemic. Participants are expected to read their work regularly. Eleanor Linn has led this writing group since 2014. She is a published author.
