David Donk entered Fishy Advice, a seven-time winner who had a seven-race streak of running first or second bro- ken in the Bowling Green when finishing fifth after pressing the pace. “The horse is coming in great. He worked really good for us the other day and I’m happy to shorten him up a bit to- morrow,” Donk said. “At a mile and three eighths, he’s just too much on the bridle and too into the race. I’ll have to look on paper and see what kind of speed is in there, but I’m hop- ing we will have someone to run at. I think he runs best when he’s not on the lead. Getting this horse a graded stakes win has always been high on the list.” Trainer Gary Contessa got Woodlander a Grade III stakes win this spring when the 5-year-old upset the Fort Marcy. Since then, he’s winless in four starts but finished well in the Poker, going a mile at Belmont in his latest. Purchased from Darley last fall, Woodlander has made almost $100,000 this year. “Darley only wants to keep the big graded stakes horses, so we felt, as long as our vet said he was OK that he was go- ing to be worth what we paid for him,” Contessa said. “We Tod Marks felt he could at least be a high-price claiming horse. 16 Sunday, August 5, 2007 Where Are They Now? The 2006 Fourstardave Remarkable News

Dave Harmon

The Special takes a look back at the Saratoga stakes winners of last year, and what’s happened in their lives since they found glory at the Spa.

The ‘News’ from Venezuela keeps getting better. The South American son of Chayim has been plying his trade between 8 and 9 furlongs, winning the Gr. II Firecracker Handicap at Churchill Downs June 30 by 2 3/4 lengths for his second score in a row. He closed out 2006 fifth in September’s Gr. I Woodbine Mile, then second in the Gr. I Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland. Started his 5-year-old campaign with an allowance win at Gulfstream Park, was sixth in the Gr. II Maker’s Mark at Keeneland, then won the Gr. II Dixie at Pimlico. He now has nine wins from 15 starts –missing the board just twice in his career – with earnings of more than $750,000. The only bad news is a slight heat-related illness he picked up recently that’ll keep him from defending his Fourstardave belt today. Who’s Next?

Sunday, August 5, 2007 19 Future stars arrive backstage Yearlings hit grounds for two-day select sale by karen johnson The whinnies could be heard everywhere on the Fasig-Tipton sales grounds Thursday morning. A constant parade of yearlings made their way into the barn area from a motorcade of vans in the parking lot. Some looked downright anxious in the unfamiliar surroundings; others inquisitive. All looked extremely dapper considering their long journeys from Kentucky, Florida and parts elsewhere. You can bet the more than 200 horses in the two-day sale will undergo a Spa treatment of sorts in the lead- up to their big night. They will be rubbed, brushed, scrubbed and fussed over until their hip numbers are called and they strut into the auction ring for this elite sale that begins Monday and concludes Tuesday. The Select Sale was shortened to a two-day event a few years ago. Previously the boutique sale was held during the course of three days. One difference this year is that the sale will kick off Monday, rather than its traditional Tuesday start. Boyd Browning, executive vice president and chief Tod Marks operating officer for Fasig-Tipton, is optimistic about Darley’s John Ferguson puts in some early work looking at a yearling Friday morning. the auction. “This is a good group of horses – physically and by A.P.
