A native of Bettendorf, IA, Budde was a first team all-state high school player as a senior and a two-year captain of a team that went to state three times. After graduation, he attended NCAA Division I Creighton University. In two seasons with the Blue Jays, Budde twice was a member of an NCAA national tournament qualifying team (2000, 2001) that had a combined record of 47-18 in two years. He then transferred to Minnesota State University and led the Mavericks in assists both years (2001-02 and 2002-03). Budde also finished second in the NCC in assists and assist/turnover ratio.

Budde earned a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in Educational Administration and Supervision in 2008 and a Bachelor of Sci- ence degree from Minnesota State University in Elementary Education in 2004.
