Beautiful, also, are the souls of my people. “The Beauty of Gray” by Live This is not a black and white world To be alive I say that the colours must swirl And I believe That maybe today We will all get to appreciate The Beauty of Gray iv I’m like in a gray area and although that sounds negative, I appreciate that in my life… There’s different parts about me that I appreciate from either side, to where both my black side and my white side, they’ve combined and made me somebody who I appreciate being. – Amber Being multiracial is not easy, as you can see, but being able to embrace both cultures and still become a part of both ethnic backgrounds is the true beauty of it. – Ana There’s a oneness between being Black and being White, and that oneness is represented within myself. – Elyse And so, it just seems to me that it’s like a lesson in school or in society that needs to be retaught and starting at an early age, like, getting kids that are from different backgrounds together and working together. – John Because one thing I think is really… odd is, like, since you are Black, you must have all the answers to the Black universe. And then you somehow also have to answer for every crazy Black fool that runs around. – Luigi But when it comes to other people, they’re making me choose one, and so I’m at ease with who I am and being a mixed person… it’s just hard when it comes to explaining it to other people. – Peach I’ve liked (being multiracial) because when I go some places I feel different. – Pip I feel like I’ve lived in the gray area, and I feel like that’s the way most of the universe really is. Very few things are actually black and white. So I feel like I’ve lived in the gray area and I’ve acknowledged it and embraced it, and that’s given me a certain perspective and outlook towards the rest of the world, and I think I like being able to share that perspective with the rest of the world. – Sonic You are innately who you are based on your experiences and your choices and your environment essentially, and not because of your skin color, so that’s what I would say. I would say it’s a balance, absolutely, of self-identity. – Sonya v I think also these experiences, just overall they’ve kind of pointed out that my being a multiracial person is kind of a unique situation… and so it just puts emphasis on the fact that even though I don’t really worry about race and it’s never been a huge topic in my family, that race is an ever- present issue. And it’s always going to affect the way people are thinking and judging other people. – Toad The best thing I like (about being multiracial) is that I feel like I’m a little bit more open to other people. – Yoshi vi DEDICATION To Mum and Dad… Thank you for supporting me in ways beyond my belief. This academic journey is one that – in what feels like another lifetime ago – seemed impossible and non-existent for me. I am grateful that you both always knew that I could do this work… and more. Abstract Often homogenised into broader narratives of African-American history, the historical experience of mixed-race women of black-white descent forms the central research focus of this thesis. Examining the lives of such women offers a valuable insight into how notions of race, class, gender and physical aesthetics were understood, articulated and negotiated throughout the United States during the early-twentieth century. Through an analysis of wide-ranging primary source material, from letters, diaries and autobiographies to advertisements, artwork and unpublished poetry, this thesis provides an interdisciplinary contribution to the field of Critical Mixed Race Studies, and African- American history. It builds on existing interpretations of the Harlem Renaissance by considering the significance of mixed-racial heritage on the formation of literature produced by key individuals over the period. Moreover, this research reveals that many of the visual and literary sources typically studied in isolation in fact informed one another, and had a profound impact on how factors such as beauty, citizenship, and respectability intersected, and specifically influenced the lives of mixed-race women.

As the child of a Japanese mother and a White father, I have often been asked this question.' While I am also male, heterosexual, law student, spouse, sibling, and child, this query is usually directed at my racial identity. As a mixed-race person, I am part of an ill-defined, amorphous group of persons who are increasingly becoming the subject of private and public scrutiny. As one commen- tator quipped, one "cannot turn on 'Oprah' without seeing a segment on multiraciality . ."' The simple question "What are you?" illus- trates the fundamental role race plays in defining our relationships with others. Physician-healers use the power of the doctor-patient relationship to help patients discover or create new illness nar- ratives with fresh meanings that reconnect them to the world and to others and thereby transcend suffering and experience healing. Yet contemporary satirists have found satiric portrayals of racial passing to be productive on two levels. On a plot-level, they use passing to interrogate contemporary racial subjectivity and to both explore racial advances and to critique persistent racial inequities. On a structural level, they write fiction that challenges the prescriptive and restrictive aesthetic criteria that they believe African American fiction is required to meet. Ultimately, this fiction offers dynamic critiques of contemporary racial identity and textual production. These authors use satire to examine how the fictional depiction of racial identities/bodies informs, depends on, and dictates the textual body and vice versa. The purpose of the study is to draw on two parallel contemporary literary theories, racial passing and satire, in order to analyze the works of five of the most important and recognized contemporary satiric writers of the post-civil rights generation: Percival Everett, Paul Beatty, Mat Johnson, Trey Ellis, and Adam Mansbach.

I follow Michael Omi and Howard Winant in defining race as “a concept which signifies and symbolizes social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies.” This definition resists pinpointing what those signifiers and symbols are, but it does acknowledge that real people are the objects of signification. Their assertion that race is “a social construction which alters over the course of time due to historical and social pressures” expresses how the meanings of race change, depending on the time and place, and these endless possibilities affirm the vagary about exactly what race is. Because it is often at the fluctuating intersection of race, gender, and class, mixed race is the starting point for this Seminar on United States History. The required readings address racial mixture in different ways, demonstrating the interplay of analytic lenses that this theme accompanies. However, the readings serve the ultimate aim of the class: to design, research, and write a significant piece of scholarly work of your own choosing. Through reading reflection papers, source analysis papers, revision exercises, and peer workshops, this class will help you prepare a twenty-page manuscript ready for submission to peer review publications.     Jazz in the Age of Anxious Modernist Aesthetics: Authenticity versus Kitsch Christen Kold Thomsen Odense University It was the then recently expatriated poet W. H. Auden who gave literary currency to anxiety as a short-hand diagnosis of the artistic New Yorker mentality after World War 11. Auden7s verse drama from 1947, The Age of Anxiety, dealt with four lonely characters in a New York bar who made timid contact while their minds probed the anxieties and potential happiness made possible by such relationships. Timidity and safety were moral judgments made by those who wanted to maintain, or re-claim, the antagonistic defiance of artistic modernism. l The art critic Harald Rosenberg was especially effective in appro- The contents of this article were first presented in a talk at a seminar about American jazz at the University of Aarhus, May 1, 1997. 1 Anxiety as a diagnostic term transferred from psychiatric literature to cultural affairs was also familiar from the activities of Harry Stack Sullivan - a controversial, and now all but forgotten American psychiatrist - who was once a voice that made the definition of modern man equivalent with sickness. Loneliness and isolation were central to Sullivan's - and after him couiltless other - descriptions of American social life and character in the 1940s and early 50s. To Sullivan the American character oscillated belween "anxiety" (a rather open category that included all sorts of emotional trouble and suffering) and a resultant desire for "security" (cf Steven Marcus, Freud and the Culture of Psychoanalysis (New York: Norton, 1984, pp. 231ff, esp. p. 238).

Post The great paradox in contemporary race politics is exemplified in the narrative constructed by and about President Barack Obama. This narrative is all about race even as it makes various claims about the diminished significance of race: the prospect of racial healing, the ability of a new generation of Americans to transcend race or to choose their own identity, and the emergence of a post- racial society.1 While I do not subscribe to the post-racial theories 1 I tried to find the source of the claims that Obama “transcends” race. There are two possibilities: that Obama is not identified or chooses not to identify as a black man but as someone not “raced” and/or that Obama is simply able to overcome the resistance of white voters who ordinarily would not be inclined to vote for a black man. While these sound as if they are the same, they are actually different. If the entire community, including both whites and blacks, no longer see race as relevant, then the reference to “transcendence” or to a “post- racial” moment in history is probably appropriate. If, however, the phenomenon we are considering is simply the fact that some whites no longer consider race relevant in judging who is qualified, if racial bias or animus has lost some of its force, then race may still be relevant in a multitude of ways important to both whites and blacks.
