Neste número, além do material regular, oferecemos o Dossiê “Formalismo Russo”, organizado por Valteir Vaz. Dedicado a esta importante escola de crítica literária mundialmente conhecida, o Dossiê reúne uma série de artigos, entrevistas, traduções e resenhas, que giram em torno de três eixos prin- cipais: história, teoria e análise. Em seguida ao material do Dossiê apresentamos uma série de artigos com temática livre. Em “On the Sources of Nihi- lism in Dostoevsky’s ‘Crime and Punishment’”, Markos Ga- lounis procura identificar a ideologia de Raskólnikov com a dos representantes da intelligentsia radical Nikolai Tcher- nichévski e Dimítri Píssarev, e traçar a continuidade e a descontinuidade das ideias desses pensadores. O argumento é que Dostoiévski percebe a evolução e a radicalização das ideias da intelligentsia através das lentes da evolução e ra- dicalização dos hegelianos de esquerda, Feuerbach e Stirner, cuja ideologia influenciou a intelligentsia radical russa. A contribuição de Paulo Cesar Jakimiu Sabino a este número da RUS está voltada para o filósofo russo N. Tchernichévski. No artigo “Tchernichévski: entre o determinismo e a revo- lução”, o autor coloca em questão o aspecto racionalista e determinista da obra de Tchernichévski – algo muito comum quando ela é lida à luz de outras interpretações já consagra- das, como a de Dostoiévski. Em “Intelligentsia e práticas autobiográficas na Rússia: Passado e Pensamentos de A. Herzen”, Giuliana Teixeira de Almeida examina a tradição autobiográfica na Rússia, onde grandes transformações históricas coexistiram com um grupo excessivamente sensível à História (a intelligentsia), tornando a tradição autobiográfica forte e arraigada no país, 1 e analisa um dos textos fundadores dessa tradição: Passado e Pensamentos, de Aleksandr Herzen. No artigo seguinte, “A figura do mundo na dispersão dos fragmentos: O exército de cavalaria, de Isaac Bábel”, Marcos Vinícius Ferrari e Betina Bischof desenvolvem uma leitura de O exército de cavalaria (1926) focalizando especialmente a linguagem do autor, a estrutura narrativa e o papel desem- penhado pelo narrador protagonista e por sua trajetória de formação. O artigo trata ainda de questões concernentes à representação da matéria épica, ao efeito geral de paradoxo, conflito e choque observável na obra e, finalmente, à possi- bilidade de caracterizar o livro de Bábel como um romance modernista. O artigo de Lyudmil Dmítrov, “Концепт „лишние люди“ и его динамика в русской драматургии XIX века” (O con- ceito de “homem supérfluo” e sua dinâmica na dramaturgia russa do século XIX”), procura investigar o fenômeno que essa figura constituiu no espaço do drama russo, desde Gri- boiédov até os dramaturgos do final do século XIX e início do século XX – Lev Tolstói, Anton Tchekhov e Maksim Górki, re- presentantes de três gerações diferentes, assim como de três tendências estéticas do pensamento sociocultural na Rússia. Para fechar esta edição, apresentamos o ensaio “Apologia de um louco”, de P. Ia. Tchaadáiev, em tradução de Théo Amon. Trata-se de um dos documentos fundamentais da futura po- lêmica entre eslavistas e ocidentalistas, que alternadamente reclamariam para si o impulso dado por Tchaadáiev. Redigi- do após o autor ter sido declarado oficialmente insano como represália à sua Primeira carta filosófica, o texto se tornou um pequeno tratado de filosofia da história aplicada ao caso russo. Nele, Tchaadáiev retifica posições extremas da Carta filosófica, mas também defende o fundamento do seu raciocí- nio e o desenvolve em novas direções. Fátima Bianchi 2 Dossiê: Formalismo russo Mais de cem anos após seu surgimento, a história do For- malismo Russo ainda continua passível de revisão. Afora o reconhecimento de que o objeto de toda história é um objeto em movimento, ou seja, aberto ao devir histórico, no tocante ao formalismo a tarefa se mostra ainda mais árdua devido à dificuldade de se encontrar uma unidade teórica em sua vasta produção. A primeira constatação que um historiador do movimento certamente faria diz respeito à quase ausên- cia de homogeneidade na produção teórica de seus repre- sentantes. Isso em parte se deve ao isolamento geográfico a que estavam submetidos os representantes da escola, que se dividiam em duas associações diferentes: a Sociedade para o Estudo do Linguagem Poética (OPOIAZ), em Petrogrado, que contava, entre seus representantes, com Boris Eikhenbaum, Viktor Chklóvski e Iúri Tyniánov, e os integrantes do Círculo Linguístico de Moscou, composto, entre outros, por Roman Jakobson, Grigóri Vinokur, Piotr Bogatyrióv, Boris Iarkhó. Além disso, os dois grupos apresentavam interesses teóricos diferentes: enquanto os membros da OPOIAZ centravam seus esforços sobretudo no campo da Teoria Literária (Poética), o grupo moscovita mantinha o substancial de suas pesqui- sas no âmbito da Linguística, particularmente nos aspectos sonoros da língua. No que se refere à produção teórica, o resultado mais impor- tante obtido pela escola formalista reside no estabelecimento de certos princípios básicos do estudo da literatura como estrutura especial, concebida, a princípio, como distinta de textos não literários.     A Study of Deixis in Relation To Lyric Poetry by Keith Michael Charles Green Submitted for the Degree of Ph.D. in the Department of English Language I , University of Sheffield October 1992 A STUDY OF DEIXIS IN RELATION TO LYRIC POETRY KEITH MICHAEL CHARLES GREEN SUMMARY This thesis is an examination of the role of deixis in a specific literary genre, the lyric poem. Deixis is seen as not only a fundamental aspect of human discourse, but the prime function in the construction of 'world-view' and the expression of subjective reference. In the first part of the thesis current problems in deictic theory are explored and the relationship between deixis and context is clarified. A methodology for the analysis of deixis in any given text is constructed and the pragmatics of the lyric poem described. The methodology is applied to detailed analyses of selected lyric poems of Vaughan, Wordsworth, Pound and Ashberry. There is a demonstration of how deixis contributes to the functioning of the poetic persona, and the changes in deixis occurring diachronically in the poetry are examined. In conclusion it is demonstrated that although deixis necessarily reflects the changing subjectivity of the poetic persona through time, there are many elements of deixis which are constant across historical and stylistic boundaries. There remains a tension between the constraints of the genre, the necessary functions of deixis and the shifting subjectivities which that deixis reflects. The increased emphasis on the aesthetics of language and the deliberate use of features such as repetition, meter and rhyme, are what are commonly used to distinguish poetry from prose, but debates over such distinctions still persist, while the issue is confounded by such forms as prose poetry and poetic prose. Some modernists (such as the Surrealists) approach this problem of definition by defining poetry not as a literary genre within a set of genres, but as the very manifestation of human imagination, the substance which all creative acts derive from. Poetry often uses condensed form to convey an emotion or idea to the reader or listener, as well as using devices such as assonance, alliteration and repetition to achieve musical or incantatory effects. Furthermore, poems often make heavy use of imagery, word association, and musical qualities. Because of its reliance on "accidental" features of language and connotational meaning, poetry is notoriously difficult to translate. Similarly, poetry's use of nuance and symbolism can make it difficult to interpret a poem or can leave a poem open to multiple interpretations. It is difficult to define poetry definitively, especially when one considers that poetry encompasses forms as different as epic narratives and haiku.

Firstly, it claims that it is meaningful to describe Wordsworth’s aesthetic, and his beliefs about the subject-object relationship, as substantially empiricist. However, it is not claimed that Wordsworth is consistently empiricist in the way that a philosopher might aspire to be: indeed, there is a place to be found within this argument for the recognition of his transcendentalism. While it is granted that the word “empiricist” is not always used in the most rigorous philosophical sense, the influence of philosophical empiricism on Wordsworth naturally figures in the argument. Secondly, the thesis demonstrates that the continued influence of Wordsworth in the twentieth century has to be understood primarily as the influence of his empiricist aesthetic. The thesis concludes by suggesting that there are wider possibilities for poetry than are encouraged by this aesthetic. The importance of undertaking this project does not lie only in objections to Wordsworth’s theory or practice, but arises also from a consideration of his continuing influence.

All chapters pro- vide new insights into linkages between the arts, philosophy and other disciplines during this period. Tangential points between early Russian systems thinking and approaches to montage that were being developed within the film community are examined in detail. The contributing authors focus on two thinkers: the filmmaker, Sergei M. Eisenstein and the systems theorist, Aleksandr A. Bogdanov. In the early years of his career as a theatre and film director, Eisen- stein worked within the Proletkult, a cross-disciplinary movement the objective of which was to create a new ‘proletarian culture’ by fostering the values of ‘collectivism’ through tuition on literature, theatre, the graphic arts and the sciences.

Signed: Date: 2 November 2015 Abstract The thesis consists of a novel (The Willow Pattern Bridge) and a critical study of historical novels by three contemporary British novelists; Alan Hollinghurst (b.1954), William Boyd (b. 1952) and Adam Foulds (b.1974). The novel, The Willow Pattern Bridge, is work of historical fiction set in Manchester in 1890s and tells the story of a young family who travel together to America to begin a new life. It is concerned with the transmission of identity and the experience of industrialised space. The critical part of the thesis explores the writing of historical fiction by three contemporary British novelists. It consists of three chapters. The first chapter looks at the uses of material culture in the work of the three writers as a way of negotiating the pastness of the past. The use of material culture in these historical novels is explored by reference to focalisation, defamiliarization and improvisation across the work of the three. The focus of the chapter is different uses of material culture in constructing the past in contemporary fiction. The second chapter examines the use of landscape and space in the work of the same three novelists.

    Jeff Barda Murray Edwards College, Cambridge University UFOs: Unidentified Literary Objects in French Contemporary Poetry Since symbolism, perspectives on the notion of ‘object’ in French poetry have known a long genealogy made up of upheavals and renewals. From Dada’s objet trouvé to Ponge’s materialism in passing through Ghérasim Luca’s ‘objectively offered object’, the ‘object- poem’ has become a central issue in the search for new modes of expression in French poetics. The recent years, however, saw, in France the rise of new forms of ‘object poems’ cutting across all forms of traditional formal techniques and criterion of identifications. In their two influential volumes of La Revue de Littérature Générale published in 1995 and 1996, French poets Pierre Alferi and Olivier Cadiot offered an inventory of techniques of composition (loops, cut-up, braiding, badgering, grafting etc) to produce what they termed ‘OVNIS’. This acronym whose play on word refer to both their uniqueness (‘Objet Verbaux non Identifiés’, ‘Unidentified Literary Objects’) as well as their peculiarity (OVNI is the French equivalent for UFO) were texts based on the manipulation and the grafting of textual residues (‘ready-mades’) which often incorporated filmic or pictorial fragments that migrate throughout other fields, genres and media and demonstrated an engagement with the ‘real’ through contextual displacement and the redeployment of texts far removed from literary contexts (legal documents for instance) often to political ends. Since, the ufologic metaphor has been used in different contexts that include visual arts arts (OLP for ‘Objets Littéraires Plastiques’, ‘Plastic Literary Objects’), installation (IDO for ‘Installation Déréalisantes d’Objets’, ‘Derealized Installations of Objects’) or music (OSNI for ‘Objets Sonores Non Identifiés’, ‘Sonic Non Indentified Objects).
