Charity No. 289677 2 Editorial FEBRUARY 2011 You can read on p 3 that Great Chalfont Manor garden will be open on Feb 13th, especially for its wonderful display of snowdrops. In my garden a day or two ago, a few tufts were just showing, mere green spikes with a glimmer of white. Today, a sunny morning, one or two heads have bent over, and the flowers are starting to open. Although they are so much loved, and so widespread today, snowdrops may not be native to Britain but have been introduced as a garden flower from the continent. There is little reference to them earlier than the eighteenth century – and Shakespeare never names them, though he loved flowers, referring more than once to primroses, violets and daffodils. Yet there are wild colonies now, and they may have been known much earlier. Their pure whiteness has long been associated by the Catholic Church as a symbol of Candlemas, the feast of the purification of the Virgin Mary, which falls on February 2nd, and some of the best known colonies are on the sites of old monasteries and nunneries. This information, and much more, can be found in Richard Mabey’s wonderful Flora Britannica, where he also says “Wiltshire could well claim to be the top snowdrop county in England.” I can find surprisingly few poems about snowdrops, but in Seamus Heaney’s moving poem Mid Term Break, in which he remembers the death of his young brother who was hit by a car, he writes, Snowdrops And candles soothed the bedside . another association of the flower with youth and innocence. Please see the note on p 10, about the list of Village Organisations. 3 News from Dorothy House Drop in to Great Chalfield The 2011 Dorothy House open gardens seasons starts this month, when the magnificent displays of snowdrops at Great Chalfield Manor, near Holt, will be open to visitors. The grounds of the National Trust- owned Jacobean manor house will be open from 2-4pm on Sunday 13 February. The carpets of snowdrops are a truly wonderful sight – and a promise that spring is on its way. For further details, visit www. dorothyhouse.co.uk or call 01225 721480. If you are interested in opening your garden – large or small – for the hospice this year, please call us on the number above. We can help with publicity and provide support on the day, so do get in touch if you would like to be involved. Community spirit We’re often asked how we manage to look after so many people – about 700 patients and their families at any one time – when our building here in Winsley has just 10 in-patient beds. The answer is that Dorothy House was originally set up to serve its local community in the community, and most of our care still takes place in our patients’ own homes. Our specialist nurses and Hospice@Home carers look after patients across our 700-square-mile catchment area, with out- patient and day patient services provided at Winsley and in our two outreach centres in Chippenham and Midsomer Norton. If your club, group or school would like to find out more about the work of the hospice, we would be delighted to provide a speaker. Just get in touch with the fundraising department on 01225 721480. Best foot forward The Dorothy House Midnight Walk will be taking place in Bath on Saturday 10 September. The event is open to women aged 16 or over – check the website to find out how to sign up for this fantastic fundraising event. 4 SCHOOL’S SPOT January is usually thought of as a quiet time in the school year. Not for Winsley School – we have been fighting the winter blues with our dancing. We held a Dance Week in which all the children had workshops in different styles of dance: Street Dance, Hip Hop, Rock n Roll, Salsa & Latin, Freestyle and Disco. These sessions were “bought” with the Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers which the school and wider community collected last year. We’d like to say a big thank you to Weaver readers who handed any of these in to the school. The children really appreciated the experience. They tried out some of their new skills at the school disco the following week. Our Year 4, 5 & 6 Dance Club members have been busy rehearsing a dance for the West Wiltshire Schools Dance Festival. Their performance will be on 17 February at Bath Forum, a great opportunity for them to perform in front of a live audience at a professional venue. We have been lucky in having Tag Rugby coaching from Bath Rugby professionals this term. One afternoon we had a visit from two of the team members, Josh Ovens and Ross Batty, who signed autographs and spoke to the children. Badgers Class went to London for the day to visit the Imperial War Museum as part of their study of the Second World War. They have also been cooking using war-time rations and learning to knit. In case all this sounds like too much fun, it must be said that the children have also found time to do some English, maths and science! 5 “Winsley Acorns Pre-school” cordially invites you to join us at a Fundraising Concert With the “Three Little Singing Maids from School”, Katie Eels, Dajana Kovac and Kristina Takashina, accompanied on the piano by accomplished Bristol and White Horse Opera musical director, Arne Kovac. 5 February 2011, 8pm St Nicholas Church, Winsley A fun and varied programme of popular classical and musical theatre solos and ensembles, to include Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro, beautiful songs by Schumann and Brahms, duets from Hansel and Gretel, Offenbach duets and arias, and the virtuoso Girl in 14G, as well as Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Little Maids From School”... Something for everyone, we hope! Please come along, enjoy the music and support the village pre-school! Despite being in the grounds of Winsley School, the Pre-school is a Registered Charity and is not Council funded. Your support is essential to our survival! • Uplands Cottage, Green Lane, Turleigh, Bradford-On-Avon, BA15 2HH
Uplands Cottage, Green Lane, Turleigh, Bradford-on-Avon, BA15 2HH. £700,000. Uplands Cottage is beautifully situated on Green Lane in Turleigh between Bradford-on-Avon & Winsley near Bath. The cottage offers flexible living spaces over two floors. The ground floor has a very attractive sitting room with dining area, fireplace & French windows to the terrace at the front of the house. Adjoining this is the smart kitchen creating a very sociable space for friends & family – the heart of the home I would suggest. We also find a good double bedroom & shower room as well as the welcoming entrance hall. Upstairs the accommodation is set around the fabulous drawing room with beamed ceiling, this leads out to the pretty garden & water feature via the conservatory. The generously proportioned master bedroom is triple aspect with a lovely window seat. Adjoining this is a large dressing room or study which might serve as a third bedroom occasionally or a nursery. Lastly there is second bathroom. The house is very smartly presented & enjoys a relaxing atmosphere & fine outlook. Externally is a generous plot. The garden to the immediate rear & side are formal cottage gardens with an orchard & useful timber outbuildings beyond. Surprisingly there is a strip of woodland through a gate beside the stone-built store at the top of the plot! There is driveway parking for two cars. Uplands Cottage seems to tick most boxes for discerning house hunters. One to view. Turleigh is a very popular village in the beautiful valley near Bradford-on-Avon & Winsley to the south east of the Georgian city of Bath.

  • Biodiversity at Parish Level
Wiltshire Botany 12, 2011, pages 26-35 BIODIVERSITY AT PARISH What is biodiversity? LEVEL Biodiversity is a term for the variety of wildlife which we ought to be maintaining and enhancing. It The example of Winsley refers to the existence of a large number of species, and variations within species, of living things (eg Pyramidal Orchid, the Marbled White butterfly), of John Presland the different communities of which they form a part (eg species-rich limestone grassland), and of the environments which these species and communities require (eg limestone grassland which has not been agriculturally improved by fertilisers, herbicides, etc). It is perhaps a fuller definition of “nature”, but with value judgements implied. The term “biodiversity” appears to have become more prominent than the formerly popular term “nature conservation”. Perhaps this is because “nature conservation” had become too associated in the public mind with maintaining rare species rather than a wide variety of species and a variety of entire communities. Biodiversity encompasses both. Furth- er, nature conservation may have implied that we only keep what we have, whereas biodiversity Cephalanthera damasonium (White Helleborine): thinking includes enhancement of existing commun- Winsley’s only UK Biodiversity Action Plan ities and creation of new ones to increase the number Priority Species and variety of organisms and link them up into networks through which species can more easily move and establish themselves more widely. However, “biodiversity” is not an activity - it needs a word added to say what we need to do. Perhaps we should speak of “biodiversity promotion”, since more than conservation is required.
