  • History Study 2020
History Study 2020 January 2020: BLUE PLAQUES This month, once again, we had a diverse offering of short talks under the umbrella of Blue Plaques. We had the brief history of some well-known people – Shackleton, Louis Napoleon (nephew of Bonaparte) and Arthur Mee the author of the children’s encyclopaedias. Known to some, but not to others, was Cosy Powell a drummer who had worked with bands such as Black Sabbath. Scary that one of our contemporaries already has a Blue Plaque! Another talk was of Richard Oastler, the Factory King who was moved by pity at the long hours worked by young children in factories and was a tireless champion of the Ten Hours Factory Bill in the mid 1800s. Baron (name not title) Webster contributed to the successful setting up of the trans-Atlantic cable enabling Queen Victoria and President Buchanan to communicate directly for the first time. The most local plaque was for General Ireton from Attenborough. He was an English general in the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War and the son-in-law of Oliver Cromwell. One plaque, also local, had been put up by the National Chemical Landmark scheme at BioCity to mark the achievements of chemists researching and creating the anti-inflammatory drug Ibuprofen which Boots, for whom they worked, patented in 1962. Eclipsing all of these talks was a presentation about the ISOKON building in Hampstead. There are three plaques posted there, but wider interest is in the community of people living in and visiting the 32 minimalistic flats in the 1930s – a community of Avant-garde artists.

  • Post-Medieval and Modern Resource Assessment
THE SOLENT THAMES RESEARCH FRAMEWORK RESOURCE ASSESSMENT POST-MEDIEVAL AND MODERN PERIOD (AD 1540 - ) Jill Hind April 2010 (County contributions by Vicky Basford, Owen Cambridge, Brian Giggins, David Green, David Hopkins, John Rhodes, and Chris Welch; palaeoenvironmental contribution by Mike Allen) Introduction The period from 1540 to the present encompasses a vast amount of change to society, stretching as it does from the end of the feudal medieval system to a multi-cultural, globally oriented state, which increasingly depends on the use of Information Technology. This transition has been punctuated by the protestant reformation of the 16th century, conflicts over religion and power structure, including regicide in the 17th century, the Industrial and Agricultural revolutions of the 18th and early 19th century and a series of major wars. Although land battles have not taken place on British soil since the 18th century, setting aside terrorism, civilians have become increasingly involved in these wars. The period has also seen the development of capitalism, with Britain leading the Industrial Revolution and becoming a major trading nation. Trade was followed by colonisation and by the second half of the 19th century the British Empire included vast areas across the world, despite the independence of the United States in 1783. The second half of the 20th century saw the end of imperialism. London became a centre of global importance as a result of trade and empire, but has maintained its status as a financial centre. The Solent Thames region generally is prosperous, benefiting from relative proximity to London and good communications routes. The Isle of Wight has its own particular issues, but has never been completely isolated from major events.

  • 6. the Tudors and Jacobethan England
    6. The Tudors and Jacobethan England History Literature Click here for a Tudor timeline. The royal website includes a history of the Tudor Monarchs [and those prior and post this period]. Art This site will guide you to short articles on the Kings and Queens of the Tudor Music Dynasty. Another general guide to Tudor times can be found here. Architecture Click here for a fuller account of Elizabeth. One of the principle events of the reign of Elizabeth was the defeat of the Spanish Armada (here's the BBC Armada site). Elizabeth's famous (and short) speech before the battle can be found here. England's power grew mightily in this period, which is reflected in the lives and achievements of contemporary 'heroes' such as Sir Francis Drake, fearless fighter against the Spanish who circumnavigated the globe, and Sir Walter Raleigh (nowadays pronounced Rawley), one of those who established the first British colonies across the Atlantic (and who spelt his name in over 40 different ways...). Raleigh is generally 'credited' with the commercial introduction of tobacco into England .about 1778, and possibly of the potato. On a lighter note, information on Elizabethan costume is available here (including such items as farthingales and bumrolls). Literature Drama and the theatre The Elizabethan age is the golden age of English drama, for which the establishment of permanent theatres is not least responsible. As performances left the inn-yards and noble houses for permanent sites in London, the demand for drama increased enormously. While some of the smaller theatres were indoors, it is the purpose-built round/square/polygonal buildings such as The Theatre (the first, built in 1576), the Curtain (late 1570s?), the Rose (1587), the Swan (1595), the Fortune (1600) and of course the Globe (1599) that are most characteristic of the period.

  • Conservation Area Statement Hampstead 2
Conservation area statement Hampstead 2 Conservation & Urban Design Team London Borough of Camden Environment Department Town Hall Extension Argyle Street London WC1H 8ND Telephone: 020 7974 1944 Produced by Camden Design & Print END200/01 4279 Tel: 020 7974 1985 page 3 Location page 8 History page 12 Character page 46 Audit page 57 Current Issues page 59 Guidelines page 68 Road Index HAMPSTEAD Conservation Area Statement The aim of this Statement is to provide a clear indication of the Council’s approach to the preservation and enhancement of the Hampstead Conservation Area. The statement is for the use of local residents, community groups, businesses, property owners, architects and developers as an aid to the formulation and design of development proposals and change in the area. The statement will be used by the Council in the assessment of all development proposals. Camden has a duty under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 to designate as conservation areas any “areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.” Designation provides the basis for policies designed to preserve or enhance the special interest of such an area. Designation also introduces a general control over the demolition of unlisted buildings. The Council’s policies and guidance for Conservation Areas are contained in the Unitary Development Plan (UDP) and Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG). This Statement is part of SPG and gives additional detailed guidance in support of UDP policies. The Statement describes the character of the area, provides an outline of the key issues and identifies development pressures which are currently a cause of concern.
