The company hopes to reduce the amount of wastes collected in the state to 920,000 tonnes this year. — Filepic JOHOR BARU: There should be no delay in proceeding with the Bukit Payung sanitary landll project as it is critical to meet the state’s waste disposal needs, says the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation Sdn Bhd (SWCorp). Johor SWCorp director Cairul Hisham Jalaluddin said the project located in Batu Pahat, about 130km from here, was approved by the Housing and Local Government Ministry during the Pakatan Harapan administration. “Even the previous Johor government had given its green light for the project,’’ he said, adding that the landll project would help solve the problem of waste disposal in the state following the closure of several landlls in the past two years. He hoped the new Federal and state governments would continue with the Bukit Payung project, slated to start in the rst quarter of next year. Cairul said the landll site covering an area of about 20ha would be able to accommodate waste disposal from Batu Pahat, Kluang, Labis, Muar, https://www.thestar.com.my/metro/metro-news/2020/03/13/bukit-payung-sanitary-project-slated-to-start-first-quarter-of-2021 1/2 3/15/2020 Bukit Payung sanitary project slated to start first quarter of 2021 | The Star Online Renggam, Tangkak and Yong Peng. “Based on the planning of the project, it will comprise two components, namely the sanitary landll and the incinerator,” he said. Cairul added that the sanitary landll component would start rst, followed by the incinerator project which was expected to begin either in 2025 or 2026. The cost of the project has yet to be announced. He said having an incinerator as part of the Bukit Payung project would help to prolong the landll’s lifespan, which would otherwise only last for about seven years. Presently eight sanitary landlls are operating in Johor following the closure of the Ladang CEP Renggam landll in Kluang in 2018, and the Bandar Penawar and Bandar Tenggara sites last year. The Ladang CEP Renggam landll was closed due to leachate Cairul says having an incinerator as part contamination. of the Bukit Payung project will help prolong the landll’s lifespan. Johor’s sanitary landlls are stretched to the limit following the closures, and struggling to cope with the tonnes of waste collected every year. In 2017, some 1,085,631 tonnes of waste was collected in the state, with the gure declining to slightly more than 960,966 tonnes in 2018, and 947,416 tonnes last year. SWCorp simed to reduce the amount to 920,000 tonnes this year. Separately, Cairul hoped residents living in housing estates would park their vehicles properly and not block the movement of garbage trucks. He said while it was their prerogative to park the vehicles outside their houses, they should also think of the problems faced by the contractors when collecting rubbish. “Feedback from the garbage truck drivers and rubbish collectors showed they have problems at housing estates where vehicles are parked haphazardly,’’ said Cairul.
